If Dragon Age was real life, and you had a choice on where to live in Fereldan, where would it be?

Oh, by the way, just so I am clear, yes, you are as what you are, a Human, not an Elf or a Dwarf.

I, for one, think I would find it rather cozy living in Orzammar.

But than again, I kinda like the nomadic, forest-dwelling lifestyle of the Dalish.

I sure-as-hell wouldn't want to live stuck inside a stupid tower....

Enough about me, what about you people?

As a human you wouldn't be welcome in Orzammar or with the Dalish.

There is an island in between Orlais and Ferelden that is allegedly part of Ferelden. I'd like to live there and pray to the Maker that Darkspawn can not swim.

I don't know enough Ferelden as a whole to make a decisive choice. What we've seen in DA:O is very limited. Ask me again once I play DA:I and actually get to travel and actually see what it is like.

No.

Realistically you're dealing with civilizations at a similar level of technological development as European nations in the Late Middle Ages or Early Renaissance. Maybe you've got a few things the ancient Romans seemed to do better than medieval Europeans, like plumbing and sewers (medieval London's streets flowed with raw sewage), but the quality of life is still going to be major stepback from the modern world you live in now. No air conditioning, heating (except for that provided by a fireplace), or electricity. Unless you're very wealthy, no flowing water either. You're must go and fetch your drinking water, assuming the local water is even safe to drink (medieval Londoners dumped sewage and garbage into the Thames), and you're probably using public baths. No modern medicine. Diseases like cholera, Bubonic plague, malaria, ect could be a problem. Intestinal parasites as well. I suppose magic could cure them in the world of Thedas, but still..who wants to get the plague or a tapeworm?

For me it would be living in Redcliffe at a time after Eamon gives up his Arldom to Teagan

1) lakeside property

2) lots of open real estate after Isolde's folly

3) Teagan as the landlord

I'd be a human because elves and dwarves get the short end of the stick in regards to treatment from the most populous race on the surface.

@ Han Shot First --nice post, Captain Buzzkill.  OP wasn't asking about a critique on the civilization, he was asking for 'where you'd like to live if you were a Fereldan.'  I'm assuming no Fereldan has heard of modern conveniences, so they wouldn't miss them. And they do have access (If in Redcliffe, within a day's journey by boat according to dialogue with Teagan, farther if in other parts of the country, but still accessible) to magical healing so disease wouldn't be too great a concern.

I doubt they can. The Archdemon, however, probably doesn't need to.

You would probably have the crap beaten out of you if you tried to buy a house in the Alienage. You could probably get a house somewhere else in Denerim, however: Goldanna is apparently flat broke too, and she lives in the Market District. Or you could find a nice house in the Bannorn that needs someone to clean it or work in its attached fields. (Or to oversee the elves who do those things.)

I think that if you're a friend of the king, it's possible to be granted permanent residence in Orzammar.

To be honest, I can't see myself living anywhere but in Denerim. Or maybe a big estate owned by the feudal aristocracy.

I'm the typical urban animal. I can't live without the everyday conveniences anymore. People who had the chance to live in the countryside for a while are luckier than me. They can do without plenty of superficial things which, for people like me, have become essential needs.

It would be cool to live as an elf, with my kin, in a tight folkloric community. But considering Ferelden is mostly occupied by humans, I'm not sure it would compensate for the dangers of the human cities, all too frequent and too close to the clan.

Not sure we saw enough of the country to say for sure.  I prefer the higher latitudes with cooler and wetter weather so that would be in the south?  Ostagar looked pretty cool with the mountains but my first choice would be near the ocean.  I don't know the map well enough to name cities.

Some nice quiet island off the coast of Fereldan or perhaps a secluded estate deep in the Bannorn. Somewhere where I can have some peace and quiet and not have to hear about Fereldan politics and religion, and where nobody will come bother me to solve all of their problems. In fact, can I go there now? Anyone have a magical time machine? :D

Not sure where I'd live in Ferelden since we don't get to see that many places in DAO, somewhere around Lake Calenhad maybe. But I think it would be more interesting to live in Antiva, Rivain or with the fog warriors on Seheron. ^_^

A nice quiet island off the coast of Ferelden is probably your best bet. The Bannorn is by nature pretty chaotic and violent, at least according to the Codex, and Loghain and the darkspawn each decided to go to town on it recently.

The island would I think be safe from the darkspawn, since they don't strike me as bright enough to successfully swim, and the Archdemon probably didn't get around to torching any such islands for all that it would not be outside of its power. Loghain probably couldn't be bothered either, if the island was small enough. (Though whether or not you'd be safe from the latest crap to invade Ferelden is beyond me.)
