One of the main reasons I am more into Dragon Age over the Witcher series...

Is aesthetics.

I like creating my own "look" for my primary character, and the witcher forces you to walk around as that grotesquerie called geralt.  Why do I care you ask?  Gay dude here, and I am shallow, and if I am going to be traveling on an epic journey for scores of hours, I want something more pleasant to look at.  To the non gays here who are confused by this, imagine a game forced you to play as or mate with a haggard example of femininity.  You could not swap her out for a hotter version, no, every time a given scene was played out, you would have to look at some porkfied model, with jiggling flesh dangling everywhere, pockmarked face growing larger as it neared your character.

Do you want to have to look at that?  Don't you kind of wish there was a better looking object to be able to fulfill that role?  Thank you, now you understand.

My player characters looking like freaking runway models.  And that is why I like creating my own characters.

It's funny because one of the things i prefer in the witcher series is aesthetics but that is because i truly enjoy everything about the character of Geralt. The world, equipment, npcs etc i prefer the look of in the witcher than Dragon age.

Can't wait to play both games.

Witcher is also more adult than DA's version of adult.

Haha, yeah, I agree with you, Oberyn...I think the Witcher 2 is a beautiful, atmospheric game, and wev, I'd bang Geralt. (Although I don't really enjoy him so much as tolerate him). But I do prefer to create my own character and not be a dude and still get to bang ladies and like... most things about DA tbh, although Witcher is fun too.

However, OP, I don't know if we needed another thread to talk about Witcher v DA....ever again....lmao.

This better not lead to another Dragon Age vs the Witcher thread.

I like both series, and I'm sick of some fanbase of both game bickering on who's better.

I much prefer Dragon Age over games like Witcher.

I like the option of making my own PC as well, and injecting my own RP into them, making them my character/voice in the realms I play in.  For far too many games prior to that I was forced to adopt a character (male usually--or if female--an overly sexualized or completely dopey/innocent type) entirely of the creators' making.

The WItcher 2, and 3 from what I've seen, have fantastic aesthetics.  Dragon Age is my first choice mostly because I prefer to have more control over who my character is than I get with Geralt.

It could. So far, the guy is implying that Dragon Age allows him to make a man-harem of his most ideal Inquisitors.

And in the end, isn't that all we ask?

I love Dragon Age and all, but until Inquisition, aesthetics was not among the list of strengths for the series. Origins was a lot of blood-splattered oatmeal and NPC's with giant hands. Dragon Age 2, well, character models seemed fine enough, albeit way too soft around the edges, but I don't think I need to go on about the environments. Of course, being able to create my own characters rather than be stuck with a single design makes it all worth it for me.

I disagree, and this is coming from a straight dude. The reason why I'm perfectly fine with Geralt the way he is has more to do with how his looks are incorporated into the story and the lore. Geralt is not supposed to be incredibly attractive. He's getting old, been through more battles than he cares to remember, and he's tired. You can compare him to a Solid Snake of sorts.

His looks fit in perfectly with his personality and demeanor. Characters on occasion even mention (I believe it was the first game) that he is ugly and not easy on the eyes. It merely adds that much more depth, imperfection, and complexity to the world. Geralt is far from a knight in shining armor, and that's the point. That's what makes him a great anti-hero. That's what makes The Witcher series worth playing to begin with.

I remember when CDPR was first showing screenshots of TW2. They made Geralt much more attractive and there was an outcry from the fan base to make him more like his TW1 appearance. It's just not true to the source material and you are merely cheapening a large part of the experience and story by making everybody beautiful and no one can be ugly. The world of The Witcher is a very ugly and imperfect place. It's just nice to see CDPR isn't afraid to depict it without censoring it.

It should also be mentioned that Witchers are more or less universally hated and despised as being necessary evils to hunt monsters. They have little respect and are constantly judged as being alien or mutants. It wouldn't make any sense at all for Geralt to look like a model when everybody treats him like trash. The Witcher series and books are just not that kind of experience.

I'd probably like it more if my computer could run it better. Also I feel that Dragon Age series is far more easier to jump into. Probably because I tried Witcher 2 first since most say the gameplay in The Witcher was horrendous.

I like both for different reasons. I really don't like it when people compare the games because they're completely different games. Sure, they share similarities but they both try to achieve very different things for their audiences. Can't say I have a preference for either because they're both equally awesome. Dragon Age is better at a more customized experience with way better character-driven stories. Witcher is better at delivering a more refined protagonist that's built around a story-driven experience. Naturally they have a lot of other differences but those are the main reasons I like them for what they are. Those are probably the 2 biggest differences I see between the games. I find the characters and dialogue poorly written at times in Witcher while Dragon Age's main story arcs are not all that interesting. It's more about the relationships to me that matters and developing comradery between my buddies. Witcher I'm like eh, who are these guys/girls and why do I care about them? This gritty story is awesome though!

I think one is a more grounded fantasy that's story-driven while the other is character-driven in a more personalized high fantasy world. Both are very good at what they do.

Horrendous isn't the proper word. I'd argue it's "simplistic." Even though The Witcher 2 is technically a separate, independent story, you really should play the first one. It's more or less like jumping into Mass Effect 2 without playing the first game. You just lack context and background for what is happening.

I think you meant "customizability," rather than "aesthetics."

I don't know that it makes much sense to compare the two games, since they are very different. And besides... it's not like we have to choose between them.

I give you the thumps up OP but I think you need to do worse to get to the level of hate DA gets on the Witcher forum. Still good try, kept it up! I have faith!

Mehh... I've never played TW but half my Wardens were uggo, so not looking like a runway model is not a dealbreaker for me. :P

That reminds me, I CAN be ok with an antagonist that is not a piece of man meat, but I'd prefer a very specific archetype.  The wizened old mage.  A gandalf type figure, or Tellah of old, or Jolee Bindo.  Not some raw grizzled soldier type.  And frankly, Geralt basically looks like a standard soldier.  Yes he has powers, but he does not look like a wielder of arcane power.

Every single rpg I have ever played, I had my primary character be some kind of mage or power wielder.  In mass effect it was an adept.  The one exception was in baldurs gate 2 where I rolled a monk a couple of times, but the monk is not a standard fighter in that his power is HIMSELF, not in what metal stick he chose to pick up / finds.  HE IS THE POWER.

Nothing about the aesthetics of Geralt convey that, he LOOKS like his primary source of danger is in his martial skill.

The Witcher and Dragon Age are my two favourite modern RPG series at the moment. Don't make me choose. That's like asking me which child is my favourite.

I like the color blue more than the color red because of the aesthetics.  Eye of the beholder and all that.
