I avoided the hype train before it even started, and always do.
In fact, DA:I is the first game BioWare has released since I joined BSN. The last couple of months have been very bizarre and strange, to me. I don't even want to know who the companions are before I play the game, let alone any spoilers about the story or potential romances. I would actually have preferred to figure who could or couldn't be romanced organically, rather than having the details essentially foisted upon me, whether I wanted to know, or not (it occurs to me that the single worst source of spoilers for DA:I has actually been BioWare, itself.)
The closer we get to release, the more I am retreating from the forums (at least the portions of it that tend to contain information about DA:I.)
I ended up in the Keep Beta, but I feel kind of bad that I decided not to playtest it, because I want to avoid Dragon Age information of any kind before the game comes out.
And when it comes to hype, in general, it's nearly impossible to influence my desires. It can happen, in small ways, but for the most part, no company's hype or advertising has ever convinced me to purchase a product. On occasion, EA's marketing campaigns have even convinced me to ignore a product they released, like Dante's Inferno, or Dead Space 2. Advertising to me like I'm a 12-year old miscreant whose purpose in life is to rebel against my parents/establishment is only going to convince me that that's the intended audience for the game.
I generally assume that I am very much the exception, in this regard, but I have noticed that there are others who appear to be similar about hype/advertising.
