Hi OP,

The  Dalish Elf they featured in one of the Twitch videos was kind of normal looking. So, I know it is possible to make a PC who is not a supermodel.

I create based on the character. My nobleman was ugly and inbred looking (but thought he was super handsome) because it seemed to fit, my mageHawke warrior was a very good looking dude, for extra Carver resentment. My WarriorHawke was regular looking. You would not say he was ugly, but he didn't get offers of employment from The Blooming Rose or nothing...because I imagined him as a regular joe who changed everything.

snip.

There was a twitch stream recently for PC and the devs were playing a fem elf. I thought she was very much offbeat in facial appearance, looking far different from what a supermodel would look like. If anyone has a screenie of her, do post it!

Anyway, when you make your quizzy, can you post her? I'm curious to see the design you have in mind.

I will have a bit of both probably.  It will depend on how I feel when I roll the character.

But I have re-rolled a character because looking at his/her hair bugged me.  Since I see it a lot, it can't bug me. lol  :P

Aren't you the same person who very recently made a thread that not only criticized Iron Bull for having a small head, but said that you'd attempt to kill him because of it? I don't think you have any right to call people superficial.

Oh, snap!

Anyways, OP, why do you care about what others prefer? Is this going to be a thing now? Not only shall people complain about characters being too pretty, but now we're judging what a PC should look like? Good grief.

Also, when did "super model" become the go-to insult for all things "pretty"? It's like attractiveness is the new pock mark. .

So the OPer is complaining that not enough people want to play as an ugly character in a power fantasy game?

I mean isn't playing a character that is as attractive as possible part and parcel of the whole power fantasy game?

And I disagree about the idea that "normal" or "average" girls are not beautiful. I don't know where the OPer lives but where I live, almost all the girls are quite beautiful, so making my Shephard beautiful means making her normal. Or maybe we have different concepts of female beauty and what being a normal looking woman means?

Perhaps thew OPer really means deformed instead of "normal." But I disagree with the assertion that "not being attractive" means being "normal" which the OPer is trying to make.

Actually, unusual features can create beauty as well because they create uniqueness.

Just because a woman doesn't have Norwegion/Swedish/Icelandic features doesn't mean she isn't beautiful. It just means she doesn't look like she's from Northern Europe.

I made my FemShep anything but "sexy". She had scars all over, buzz cut, nearly bald. no make-up at all. And was a ruthless, cruel b**** to deal with.

The female elf they had on the demo was not exactly what I'd call attractive.

To each their own really. I personally like to make most of my characters range from average/decent looking to very attractive. Not Hollywood perfect but would at least be considered attractive by at least some standards. Especially male characters more so than anything. Females I'm a bit more lenient and variable with.

I will have a bearded female dwarf though. The idea of a fierce female dwarf assassin with a broken, hooked nose, stubble and an unfashionable haircut actually sounds different and unconventional.

Um...when has this EVER been an issue in a BW game?

I have more issue making them super model looking than non super model -_-

Getting the cheekbones right is always the biggest problem.

I think I had to go through 30 Shephards in ME1 before I figured out how to make a character with natural looking cheekbones.

Elves are supposed to be unusually attractive, but that elf was unusually unattractive.

Actually, most elves in both DA:O and DA2 were unusually unattractive. Gaunt faces with overly large prominent cheekbones.

Before I got that skip the intro mod my god. I wasn't even fully happy with my first Shep I was just tired of that half hour intro.

Anyone know which vid she was in?  Now I'm intrigued and need to check her out myself.

One thing that I have noticed with many custom female Commander Shepards is that they generally are overly beautified if that makes any sense. Rarely have I seen any female Shepards (including many female Hawkes and Wardens) that looked like average women. Attractive, but not like Maxim cover attractive or anything to that nature. It seems like when you allow people to create their female characters, men normally create someone who is overly sexualized while women while a bit tame, still go for extravagance in a way. You rarely see female Shepards/Hawkes/Wardens that are more on the Cassandra scale of things; attractive, yet not the typical "Hollywood", mainstream, or western ideals of what female beauty is. I am saying that most Shepards/Hawkes/Wardens I see (female) typically all have long hair, thick makup, straight and angular features etc...again, not like a Cassandra who has angular features, but is also....."normal" looking, Scout Harding as well.

For my female Elf and Qunari Inquisitors, I want to break the mold a bit. I want them to be attractive but not like OMGZ attractive. The type of female whom you may not break your neck to stare at because she is JUST SO attractive, but the type of female who you hang around with after a while and begin to find beauty in her, with the personality having a lot to play in that, not superficial features.

Again, I get the whole idea that if you are going to be playing a 100+ hour game, you would want to create someone that looks good, but still, I want to try to be less mainstream and more unique.

It is odd to me that you are using Casandra as your example of "normal"

she is stunning

give her a long hair-cut and we aren't having this conversation

at least not with her as your example

See, I just thought she looked normal. Normal in the sense that her features were offbeat from a model's appearance.
It would be interesting for everyone to link a self portrait. You'd be shocked by how much variety there is when it boils down to facial features and what people consider attractive or not....

I agree. She did simply look average. The problem is in media like this, we're often surrounded by aesthetically pleasing characters with little to no physical flaws, and people get used to that. So when they see someone who looks more on the realistic/normal side, they're like "uuuugly!" :P

lol Well, I suppose that would depend on why you can't play as a female. Either way, don't be too hard on yourself. Everyone has preferences and after all, it is your playthrough and you should play whatever character makes your experience more enjoyable.

I have a female friend who would never play as a female if given the option of male and she certainly isn't chavonist. I say, go with whatever tickles your pickle.

Yes. I want to Kill Iron Bull cause he looks silly with his small head on a huge body. But his actual facial features are ok. I just want to know where people stand in regards to how they approach the beauty of their created characters.

Isn't that kinda erm... an overreaction? You can always just not recruit him.

I've always considered the characters I make to be pretty normal looking, as far as comparing them to the other characters in-game. The CC doesn't give many options to look like a supermodel mary-sue or anything (at least before mods), but by default I'd say most of my characters are at least somewhat attractive. I like scars and the broken nose option this time around excites me though, so I may end up with some pretty rough Inquisitors. :D They'll still be gorgeous in my heart.
