Hey guys! Wanted to share this with you - we got to interview Alix on voice acting, working with BioWare, and helping to form your next inquisitor. She's such an awesome person and we truly enjoyed working with her. This is just a portion of the interview, and the rest can be found here.
What made you decide to get into voice work? Were you always interested in video games, or did your work on them proceed your interest?
Voice work is a key component to training at Drama School and an essential “tool” in any actor’s kit. I’ve always been interested in the importance of one’s voice / diction / elocution and accent choices when moulding and shaping characters, which is essentially what led me to voice work. From voice work I got into video games and now they’re a key interest of mine.
Do you ever play the games that you voice? If so, what is it like playing or interacting with a character that sounds like you?
I rarely have the time to play video games, though I have dabbled in MASS EFFECT 3 and THE LAST STORY. I also love the DEPONIA franchise, in which I played the wonderfully whacky lead role of Goal… I’ll confess that it is a little weird speaking to yourself on screen though!
What would be your dream voice job? What kinds of projects interest you the most?
I loved voicing the Inquisitor in DRAGON AGE: INQUISITION and fear I may have peaked too early, but ideally, though not essentially, there are 4 things that I’m looking for in my work:
- Is it an interesting character? I am incredibly privileged to say that all of the characters I’ve voiced have all incredibly been artistically, creatively and/or emotionally fulfilling to me.
- Is it a great story? For my money, the bigger the story the better. Give me a big and breathtaking, imaginatively stimulating world and I’m yours.
- Are the people recording it awesome? This may sound corny but, I love my bosses. All of them. Of course there can occasionally be active differences along the road to building a game/character, but fundamentally everyone has been kind, generous, supportive and encouraging of me… Particularly the London base studios that continually pull me in for auditions and work and none of which I take for granted. I know how lucky I am to work with great people.
- Is it a social interesting/important game? I have recorded games which help children learn about the dangers of climate change and games which encourage equal rights for women and LGBT people. This makes me proud.
If I get all four of the above, I’m on a home run!
Though you’ve done many roles, we all know you best as Comm Specialist Samantha Traynor. The fan community was overjoyed when they announced your role. If you could sum up YOUR experience that day in one word, what would it be? And why?
Thrilled, because I am always want to be working, I am always grateful to work and I love working for Bioware.
