Soo, I am completely new to the Dragon Age series and need a bit of briefing. I've played RPGs my entire life from Zelda and FF7 to Skyrim. I recently purchased the Xbox One and I am looking for another Skyrim-ish type of game (not the new Elder Scrolls MMO which requires a subscription) which lead me to DAI. However, I have a few questions that I would appreciate some help on.

1) It has become apparent to me that there is a sort of continued character progression that has occurred through previous DA games, as well as the Mass Effect series. How does all of that tie together and am I still ok to play the newest game without a developed character or story??

2) I am participating in the Dragon Age Keep Beta thing, but I don't know what that even involves. Do I just design a character on my Mac? Does the Beta actually allow me to play Dragon Age: Inquisition on my Xbox One?

I appreciate any and all feedback. Again, I apologize, I'm new to the series and literally have no idea what's going on.

You'll have a default world state and default main heroes, made by the devs. No big deal.

You don't have to play both previous games if you don't want to, but I'd stronly advice at least get to know the characters and companions. You'll miss half of the fun otherwise.

Read about it first, duh.

The Keep just replaces save system, it allows you to choose what you did in previous games. Manualy. Each choice you made you can change and thus create a new world state.

1) While the Mass Effect series has a continued character, the Dragon Age series has a new protagonist for each game, it is instead the world state that carries over games ie who is King, who dies during wars that take place in the previous games etc.  If you have no character, worry not!  The protagonist in Inquisition is brand new, so there is no missing out on past relationships and interactions.

2) The Keep is an app used for building the world state if you played past games.  If you have not played, bioware will have a default world.  The character creator is in the game itself, but the Keep world states you build can be imported to any platform on which you are playing, so itès not needed but it is fun to customize the world.

I hope that helps!  Welcome to DA

Ok, great! Very helpful, thank you.

For some reason, I thought the beta would allow me to explore the game itself. Anyhow, I will look into the Keep and prepare my "world-state" for the release next month!

1.) you'll be fine with this as your first game, but I will say the experience is more fun for people who know returning characters and such, so if you want you still have a little bit of time left to try out the previous games or even just watch some videos. If not, it's still made to be a perfectly good starting point for new players, I've heard devs say.

2.) the keep is there for us to make the choices we will be able to import into DAI. If you haven't played DAO or DA2, you might not really understand most of the stuff in there. In that case, you can just use the default choices. If you don't want to though, you can always read up on the choices and try to mix up your world states to your liking. if you have any questions about the choices, you can ask about them in the keep section of the forums. :3

I haven't gone through The Keep, yet, but I have the impression that it should - hopefully - cover the relatively important story and character details, as well as presenting you with the various choices to alter them that impact DA:I from the previous 2 games.

Although the animation and gameplay are kind of clunky and out-dated, Dragon Age: Origins is a magnificent game, with a well-deserved reputation as one of the true greats. I would wholeheartedly recommend it as worth playing before you explore The Keep (especially because if you explore The Keep first, you'll spoil a lot of the story for yourself.)

If you can afford it (both in time and money), World of Thedas is a great primer for the universe and might help you contextualize some of the decisions in the Keep.  It's got some typos and inaccuracies, but nothing that anyone other than the nitpicky fandom would notice :)

The Dragon Age wiki is also helpful if you're looking up decisions from the Keep.

DA Inquisition was designed so that people in your situation, could just cannonball into the bloody goodness and enjoy themselves with Gusto. skim the wiki if you have no intention of playing DAO, or DA2, eventually i would suggest playing 1 and 2 when you can, but not even for the companions, or the world state. just read so you get a brief understanding of the world of Thedas.

No need to play the previous games. Using the Keep system you can create your own world state or change the one you imported. Welcome to DA!

 1) Unlike Mass Effect you start a new main character in each Dragon Age game so you should be fine :). However, the universe in which everything takes place is the same. There are also some characters in DAI that you could meet in the previous games. The political background will probably be relevant, too. I don't think that it matters much because you can always find out about such things in game. But Dragon Age is a game that has greater impact on the story than Skyrim (at least that's what I hope. LOL). So it's not just an open world game although the developers have stated that there is a lot of exploration.

2) The Dragon Age Keep doesn't have much to do with the character you play in Inquisition. In a way, it's more like a save game import of the first two games. But instead of importing a save game you re-create the decisions you've made online. So, all the choices that matter are right there in the Keep and you don't have to play the other two games. If you don't want to bother with that you can get default choices (I think).

If you don't want to play the first two games then have a read though of the wiki to get a sense of the story so far, who is who and the possible story choices that were available to you.  A lot of the companions and advisors are people the DA has met before, they have backstory, how the world got into the mess it is has a backstory. Wiki can be a little to much info so I would start with companion histories and mage/templar info, they are the most important bits.

If you don't want wiki it then DA:I will offer you a default world state, and will most likely give a basic intro to whos who and whats what as the game progresses.

I would say the Dragon Age series is much more forgiving than Mass Effect. New character, different story, place, and all that. With that being said, as a gamer... I absolutely hate coming in late to a series. Knowing how good DA:O is... I would make the push to say you need to play it. While DA2 was lacking, the lore and atmosphere of Dragon Age as a whole still makes it a worthwhile experience. As deep, and good as this series is... again you really should play the first two.
