5 years in the future Gaben, head of Valve, is doing a panel. The audience groans with boredom as they sit through an hour of well rehearsed corporate bullshit and are given only the sparcest of details on upcoming games. As the panel is ending and the audience begins leaving their seats, Gaben holds his hand out in a stop motion. "Oh and one more thing before you go." says a now 450 pound Gaben supporting himself on a walker scooter.

 

The lights go off and a giant #3 appears on the main viewing screen. The Audience erupts with excitement! Tears run down their faces as they cheer for joy! Half Life 3 confirmed after all these years! "Dragon Age 3 will be available for download on Steam upon release day." says Gaben.

 

The crowd riots! Security is called in to restore order. In the ensuing chaos Gaben falls off his walker scooter and accidentally crushes a fan to death. Gaben is forced to step down as head of Valve for damage control reasons and Valve is bought off by Disney.

I saw the thread title and for one second I thought that maybe, just maybe, there had been word about HL3. But then the page loaded and I discovered that this thread was a greater disappointment than my life.

 

And I knew that somewhere, right at this very moment, from his throne built upon tears and shattered dreams, Gaben himself laughed maniacally while commanding Half Life 3 be delayed another five years.

I just can't take him seriously as a game developer as he seems content to be a digital distribution overseer taking credit for other peoples work.

Yes , I see it now - The release year will be 3002, because it is a wildly believed fact that Gaben knows how to divide from 1 to 2. Look at the pattern between the first two releases. The last digit is 8, divide that with 2, as in (Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2) and you get 4! As in 2004 -- divide it again and you get 2, as in 3002 or rather ... Half Life 3-002.

O'kay. Where what I think is going on with HL3 and the reasons why I think HL3 is coming someday, but not today. 

Reason 1:

Valve doesn't want to only do only Half-Life, they want to do other games and not be stuck in the same setting/franchise forever and want to do other stuff for a while.

Reason 2:

They are waiting for advancement in tech, and when Source 2 comes out/ is finished, you'll see Half-Life 3.

Reason 3:

They're not rushing it. There was a 7 year wait between HL1 and 2 and it's only been 4 years since Episode 2.

Reason 4:

Steam. Steam is making them a lot of money, and it makes sense from a business standpoint to focus on that, but they have not giving up on making games, case in point Portal 2.

Reason 5:

All of the above. All of these reasons I just gave are probably right. Unless something happens to Valve, HL3 is going to happen. They're not stupid, they know people want this game. The reason why they have been so mysterious is...well, Valve likes to be mysterious.
