To those of you that watched the Twitch stream yesterday, did you hear the Bard's song in the Skyhold tavern? I could make out (possible spoilers I guess):

Spoiler

Who is the song referring to? The line about the Lion suggests Empress Celene, but it could also be talking about Andraste. Just speculation though, I suppose. It could very well refer to nobody at all too, but that's boring.

I'm guessing Celene, but yeah it could be Andraste

My first thought is Andraste, but there isn't much there to indicate that except the "fire" symbolism. Not enough to go on.

it is hard to tell due to the fact they didn't really spend time allowing us to listen to the song.

Well the lines about being in her grace and saving people could help. Of course it could be neither celene or andraste but an older empress of Orlais.

tried my best to isolate the bard's song from Cameron and Jason talking  . not really stellar work but it will hold me till i can get my hands on the game and the soundtrack.

OriginOfWaves isolated the song, thought I'd post it here. It's really lovely, reminds me of Suzanne Vega somehow...

"Of we, of easy eyes?" The lyrics are "of we Orlesians" Not sure how you heard of we of easy eyes, but it did give me a good laugh.

Is it referring to Celene and her destroying the Alienage in masked empire perhaps?

1. Музыка: Trevor Morris – Orlais Theme.

Definitely Celene. I have even made a good disection of the song on YouTube. It's included in the quote:

I've also analysed the song a bit more.
"Empress of fire" does not contain anything but a referrence to the fact we're speaking about the Empress here.
"In the reign of the lion" - this is the first suggestion we're talking about Celene. The Valmonts (Celene's family) have a lion in their family crest.
"Eclipsed in the eye of" again, nothing in this line to clear who it is exactly.
"The empire of we Orlesians" - this suggests we're talking about the Orlesian Empress (which was obvious enough from the fact that Orlais is the only country with an Empress/Emperor, rather than King/Queen)

A little down the road in the lyrics, there's a...
"Empress of Fire,
Save us, everyone,
The nation reviles,
The course is but run, and the end has begun."
These four lines refer to the Orlesian Civil War, I believe, as it's pretty much begging the "Empress of Fire" to "Save us, everyone" while "The nation reviles [Celene? Gaspard?]" and "The course is but run, and the end has begun," which possibly refers to the ball at the Winter Palace.

The reason they call Celene an "Empress OF FIRE" could be because she torched the Halamshiral Alienage in The Masked Empire.

Let us see how fast I'm noticed. I do take pride upon the title of "Shadow", after all...

Hi.

Edit: By my count, that was two minutes. Enough time to kill a target and swiftly become one with the shadows.

Hi.

I see my title is truly a thought up myth, after all...

I know. But I am not worthy.

It's both, but mostly Celene. The tune is the same as Orlais' theme. IMHO the lyricist is trying to draw parallels between Celene and Andraste by raising Celene as an Andraste-esque figure. The fire bit is there to reinforce that connotation but I don't think it's so straightforward as to refer to the torching of the alienage

I think it has to be Andraste. It doesn't make much sense when applied to Celene. The imagery is orlesian though...Perhaps an Orlesian hymn? Hmm, on reading your posts, I'm probably wrong about this

I'm wondering if it is a national Orleasian song, and they might change the words to Emperor/Empress depending on who reigns.  The symbolism about Andraste is probably intentional, to try and emphasise Orlais' importance.  Symbolism is better for Empress though.

"Of we, of easy eyes."

I think this is, "Of we, Orlesians"

I'm gonna give it a go :)

Empress of fire, (Andraste who was burned in fire)
In the reign of the lion, (Celene)
Eclipsed in the eye of
The empire of we Orlesians. (Orlais where the Grand Chantry is Located)

Empress of fire,

What season may come,
We fight for the day
You'll restore our heart
And bring us to glory. (The whole phrase is akin to Salvation in biblical term)

We are forever (Followers of the Chantry)
In your graces. (Andraste as the Divine Figure of the Chantry in the Maker's Name)

Empress of fire,
Save us, everyone. (Andraste as the Savior Prophetess)
The nation reviles,
The course is but run, and end has begun. (possibly referring to the burning of the alienage and the events that followed after its wake, with the rifts opening -- end of the world and all that)

Empress of fire,

Believe in us all. (Biblical Term)
Embrace us with arms, (Faith and Shield)
And dress us with swords, (Sword)
And light up our hearts with blood so bold. (Sword, Shield, Faith and Fire, Iconic Symbols of Andraste she used all of this to fight the Imperium and conque the south)

Meh, just a theory though :)

Reiks nailed it, that's how I interpret the song as well.

I reckon that the title and lyrics are meant to be a subtle allusion to both Celene and Andraste, both powerful women who define Orlais (Celene as Empress, Andraste as Maker's Bride) but whether the comparison is supposed to be flattering or not is left upto the listener?

The lines about how "The nation reviles, the course is but run" probably refer to the Civil War and how not everyone is happy with how Celene is running things, as well as her decision to burn of the alienage, which is either seen as a travesty, or a brutal but necessary act, depending on whether the person is a noble, commoner, an elf or sympathetic to them?

I would say Celene. That is the main song played when you first got to Val Royeaux, also played when you dance with Florianne and when Celene gives her speech to the people, so it's definitely about Orlais.

lol this thread is back.

But again, i think its obviously Celene.

I mean simply the song is called the Empress of fire. and Celene is an empress and the only indication that title could be about Andraste is the fire but She never claimed or became a empress. also "Reign of the lion" also a clear sign its Celene.

Empress of fire,

What season may come,
We fight for the day
You'll restore our heart
And bring us to glory.   This verse is literally about the civil war and nothing more, "Empress Celene, we have been fighting for months, We fight for the day, Our nation is restored, we know you will win, and bring our side to glory"

"Save us. Everyone

Our nation reviles.

The course is but run, and end has begun"        this part is asking Celene to end the war and save 'Us' the peasants from the civil war. since people believe the end has begun since the sky has just opened up and demons are running around.

So in my opinion, this has nothing to do with Andraste. this is just a ballad about Celene and the Civil war. If you read the entire verse instead of just segments its pretty obvious. i see no indication that this bards song is about Andraste except for the one reference to fire.
