Hello, I am in the process of saving up for my first gaming PC, the Alienware x51 with the i7 [or i5 if the price difference is too great] processor, as well as all three mass effect games and all the DLCs for the trilogy. I am most excited to try out all of the benefits of playing the trilogy on PC, with mods being the top of my list [aside from using Gibbed Save Editor without going through extra steps].

What are the best, must try mods for the trilogy?

So far, I already have these mods on my to try list:

ME3's MEHEM + CEM[I like the Extended Cut as is so I'd only use this mod and Citadel Epilogue Mod once, but I promised myself I would try MEHEM and CEM for myself]

So what are some others?

I know I really want to try any mod that will make the games look as good as possible.

I have to say this... you should consider building your own PC. It's not as difficult as one might think and you'd either save a bunch of money or get a far better system then you would if you went with anything Alienware could give you. Either cheaper price for same performance or better performance for the same price, depending on which way you prefer to roll with it. Okay, enough of me telling you what you should do with your money (lol).

For ME there isn't a huge amount out there. Though I'd feel foolish NOT to mention MEUITM. Its a fairly huge texture improvement mod for the first game. It even comes with an installer that installs it all for you so you don't have to mess with texmod or me3explorer. IMO there is no reason NOT to get this puppy. It doesn't radically change the game and make geth pink and purple, it just makes the stuff thats already there look a lot better. It does take a few liberties (adding lights to some armors) but you'd have to be a real purist to really be bothered by that kind of stuff. In which case I doubt you'd be looking to mod the game anyway. :)

ME2 the mods that come to mind are basically all of Jean's texture mods. There's a lot of hidden gems at the old BSN Projects page but you'd have to search for them. Like I said, they're pretty much the best definition of hidden gems just because of how difficult some can be to come across. The best bet is to search for Mass Effect and then go through all the listing it brings up. I found an awesome retexture of Kasumi's outfit for Shepard (the fancy clothes you wear during her mission) that I still use. Sadly I've never been able to find the author or the project again to thank them for its awesomeness. So yeah, hidden gems.

ME3 is a different beast. It has a lot of good stuff going for it. For example theres actually texture mods that pretty much high-res the entire game. Like, not just armor and weapons but also the locations you visit. Beautiful stuff. The problem is that getting all these mods is very time-consuming and actually installing them with ME3Explorer can be tedious and even more time-consuming. Bioware did NOT making modding these games easy. You can easily spend a few days just shifting through all the mods and getting them installed correctly. Luckily though its a one-time deal so after you do it you're set. Thats about the only plus about it though. Its up to you if you really want to spend that much time setting these mods up. I did it because I'm a huge fanboy and wanted the pretties. Otherwise I'd be happy with just a armor or weapon texture mod and be done with it.

Anyway, here is the topic where I found all those ME3 texture mods. There are a lot of other mods there too, like armor and weapons and characters. Still, imo, the environment stuff stood out the most because I don't see many of those being done nor have I seen them anywhere else but that site. Where as stuff like weapon and armor texture mods I've seen all over the place. Though it has been nearly a year since I looked into all this. Coincidentally if you really plan on modding ME3, without just using Texmod of course (easier but you have to do it everytime you launch the game) you'd need to get familiar with the website anyway since that is the forum with the guides on how to use ME3Explorer and stuff. You'll find out about that in due time if you dont already know.

Finally a great place, if only for the increased simplicity of locating mods, is the Nexus. They have a section for each game. Though from memory only the ME3 one had substantial content. Still may be worth checking them out to see some of the cool stuff they have. I got a lot of my armor/weapon/Kaidan Bearded textures from t he ME3 nexus. So much easier to browse through there then random forum sites.

http://www.nexusmods.com/masseffect2/?

http://www.nexusmods.com/masseffect3/?

I should note that a lot of the armors/weapons texture mods for ME3 that you can find here on the forum (Ottemis and Smarteck) I've seen and personally nabbed from the Nexus. I couldn't say which one would be best for you, though. They're both very talented and made some fantastic armor retextures. It's personal opinion on what set you like best. I mix-and-matched some of my armors. Some from one guy, some from another. Not because the other is bad, but because tastes are different. My Shepard, however, uses a retexured black N7 Ajax Cerberus armor. Found here.  For /me/ its a must have but your choice of armor and what looks better is a very personal matter.

I freakin love that armor aesthetically, though I had to fiddle and mod my game a bit to change the perks to make it go well with my class. Bless the ME3Explorer community for their guides that made that possible.

Anyway the only other mod I can think to mention is this mod that removes the relay loading screens. This requires some use of the ME3explorer program and can seem intimidating to some. Though, again, for me its a must. I only wish I found it sooner. Live an learn.

I hope you find this useful.

As I am currently playing through he trilogy with lot's of mods, I thought I'd do a quick post here because it is difficult to locate all the mods and it's easy to miss cool stuff. Although, Valmar already covered almost everything very thouroughly, maybe there are a few things I can add:

ME1: Definitely MEUTIM! It's THE mod for the game. A cakewalk to install and a huge difference. For me, the whole experience of ME1 almost felt like a entirely new game. I am usually not much of a graphics fetishist but with the rather low res texture in the original game and a lot of close up shots during the conversations, this does make a difference.

ME2: Not much to add here, except, that you can mod out the loading screens, which makes loading about 10 times faster. Check out the nexus:

http://www.nexusmods.com/masseffect2/

also, one more list of textures:

http://me3explorer.f...d-tpf-t772.html

ME3: I am just playing ME3 with texture mods now (see some screens here}. The nexus is a great source. You can get high res versions of everything, plus new armors, etc. I am using a lot of stuff from smarteck, Ottemis and ELE. I'd recommend using ME3Explorer's TPF tools to install mods whenever possible to avoid compatibility issues. Valmar is right about the time consuming part, it took me about a week to mod ME3 to the point where I really thought I had a good package. I recommend making a backup at this point. This way, you can always get this version back in an instant if you want to replay later.

Also, remember: Always use Auto TOC and/or DLC TOC.bin updater in ME3Explorer after instlling mods. Always install mods that change or add pcc files first and then scan the tree. If a particular pcc file mod gives you problems with the textures, either don't isntall it or make installing it the very LAST thing you do (except for TOC.bin updates of course).

Also, I'd like to point out some really nice mods that go beyond texture changes:

1. Gabby & Ken recruitment dialogue recovery

2. Anderson extended dialogue

3. If you want to use MEHEM and romance Miranda or Jack: JohnP's additional LIs

4. If you romance just like Thane a lot, you may want to try ThaneMod (works with or without MEHEM)

5. Ash legacy mod

6. Liara full helmet mod

7. Zaeed conversation recovery mod (this one gave me some trouble. I couldn't replace textures in this pcc file but it's still a great mod)

8. Change the Robodog on the Normandy to Urz the Varren (I don't know why bu this mod just makes me smile every single time I go into the cargo bay)

All of these can be found on the Nexus.

No, but just going down there and saying "Hey there." or "Good dog!" ... Call me crazy but it just makes me smile every time.

Check out Elize's mods on the ME3 Nexus as well, she's not done many but they are good quality retextures.

For Femshep custom hair and outfits there are a bunch of modders (hidden away) on Tumblr, if interested let me know and i'll see about getting you some sort of list.

Thanks for all the responses! Really appreciate all the help

@Valmar. Yeah, after doing more research I changed my mind on the alienware. I hear it isnt much hassle, but I still dont care to build one myself. I found an Asus tower at best buy that is $250 cheaper and is more powerful. Im going to save for that instead. edit: I've been looking at building it myself and I honestly do not see how it is cheaper. I've tried getting component combinations that are of equal power to what that Asus and the x51 have and it is just as expensive.

Legacy Ashley mod is a good one for ME3, found on nexusmods. Also a few cut content restoration mods are there too; Ken and Gabby in Purgatory before you recruit them, extended conversation with Zaeed down in the refugee docks, and a few extra lines of dialogue with Anderson at the endgame. Dunno if that conflict with MEHEM though, as haven't tried MEHEM myself. I also like the buff femshep mod that gives her some muscle tone. There's a better cabin music mod too, and I liked the one that gives shep back old ME1-style scars.

Those are about all the ones I've tried (or could get to work), apart from some hi-res armor mods, which do look very nice.

There is currently just an issue with some music, not playing (which is my fault and will be fixed for the next version of MEHEM). If you go the nexus page for the extended Anderson convo mod, there is a file that makes it compatible.though. Just download and follow the instructions.

Mr. Fob's post reminded me of a few things.

First, yes, dear gods yes, get the no-loading screen mod. I don't know how I forgot it but thankfully Fob wasn't as derpy and remembered it. It is an absolute blessing. I would sooner give up my HD graphic mods then I would that. So, so, so much of ME2 was filled with those damnable video loading screens. Turns out my game was actually loading the next area near instantly and the only reason it took so long was because it had to play the whole video each and everytime. Rawr! Krogan-Headbutt!

Also hearing him talk about how MEUTIM made the experience all the better (totally agree, what a wonderful mod!) I was reminded of the game-tweak mods you can find online. These aren't really the same as texture mods and the like and can be pretty easily missed because they're not as up-front and obvious as HD graphics. I'm ashamed I totally forgot about them, really. I used a combination of  this guide and the wiki PC Tweak sections:

ME

ME2

ME3

There are a lot of great little tweaks you can perform to make your game more awesome. Some examples that I like to use were making it so dead bodies don't just vanish, bullet holes remain in the wall longer, farther view distance, increased the "far away resolution" or whatever (I don't remember the specific term) and a few tweaks to the scan, Normandy speed and mineral gathering to make replays less tedious. You'd have to sit down and read through some of the tweaks personally to really decide on what you'd like best, though, if anything.

Finally I lend more cheer and support to Fob's suggestion for the ThaneMod. Its great for those of us who felt that Thane deserved more attention in the third game. It even comes with different packages (romance, no romance) and has compatible versions for MEHEM. I don't romance him (MaleShep) but I still love having the friendship version since Thane was one of my favorite characters in the second game and I appreciate anything that gives him more substance in the third game.

It's kinda funny, despite how difficult and locked down the modding is for Mass Effect 3 the fan community still managed to make it better in places BioWare ignored. The commitment of the ME community is almost scary. Gotta love them, though. Go fans!

Btw, off topic but I have to say, since you're here, thanks a lot Mr. Fob. I seriously cant even imagine playing ME3 without MEHEM. You're a saint, you damn wizard you.
