Had it been Merrill, she wouldn't have to insist that the other person believe her. She's a well-known companion of the Champion. Also, she says "The Champion...." with such reverence. First, Merrill, along with the rest of the Champion's companions, doesn't use Hawke's title to refer to him/her. They just say 'Hawke'. And they don't say it with reverence. Surprise, anger, fear, joy, irritation, many other emotions. But you're not going start saying the title of one of your most intimate friends like it's a big, huge event you're going to tell your grandkids someday. This was a man or woman that, for seven year, saw Hawke on a daily(maybe nightly
) basis. They may be glad to see him/her, but they're not going to act like it's the most important event they need to gossip about.
Hawke's companions will be a little more blase than that.
