All those close ups of the blooming particle maelstroms are... kinda ugly. Combat is best viewed from a distance. I hope they decide to go a more realistic route for future Dragon Age combat because it's never looked very good.

I have to agree. All these ridiculous special effects are making me cringe. Warriors and rogues do not need to send up shooting rainbow sparks every time they hit an enemy. It's like, seriously?

Also, am I the only one who thinks the graphics look terrible in this video? Maybe the video is just poor quality (even though I was viewing it in 1080 HD), but the graphics were also making me cringe. Hair looks like plastic helmets, faces look like they were modeled out of play-doh, etc. I really hope it's just poor video quality.

They didn't lie. No one said anything about over 100 follower combinations, it's and I quote: "Lead an Inquisition force of your choosing. From over a hundred different party combinations."
Now, is the Inquisitor themself not part of that force and the party? So it adds up to 210, actually.

Bingo. You can manipulate numbers to paint any picture you want, really. This is done in all aspects of life, from marketing to accounting to politics and beyond. They're telling the truth, but using the math to highlight the scenario in a way that is most favorable to them. Nothing new.

The only thing missing from this trailer is the mortal kombat theme...WHO made the decision to make combat look like this? Ever since they have flooded youtube with trailers everyone in my gaming circle has lost all interest in this game.

It is pointless to resist.

I posted this in another thread.

That is just awful video. Jeez, it´s so full of Awesome™ that the whole combat turns into colorful mush. Mage twirls his staff even faster than in DA2 along with the even more Awesome™ combat moves of rogue and warrior. Holy jeebus. Where is that said part of DAO devs told us?? The tactical camera? Must be the only one then. I am just stunned, and not in a good way.

I am feeling a bit bad about this game even more now. It seems Bio has set its course to Awesome™ land, this time with land ships to get in deeper.

Lots of people responded to you that tac cam wasn't the focus of this video. Hell, combat mechanics in general weren't shown. If you want to see tac cam I'd recommend looking at the numerous videos that show it off. There's no reason they need to show it in every video.

Not the point. I already said the tac cam is not much of an improvent.

The combat is noticeably slower than DA2's was. That plus more varied enemy encounter design and the return of tac cam is the compromise between Origins and DA2.

The colors were always going to be more vivid because of a new engine. Personally I think this looks much better.

Why do so many people seem to be against brighter colours and flashier action? I mean, unless you have photosensitive epilepsy, in which case your concerns are valid.

Combat needs to look fun and interesting for both gameplay and marketing purposes. Hence the sparkles. It makes abilities stand out from normal attacks as well.

I will agree though that default inquisitors hair isn't the best haha but it's understandable considering he's been wearing a helmet in all the other videos

The point is: for a thread regarding a video showing off companions, complaints about the combat are off topic.

The idea is that Dragon Age should have a gritty realistic feel to the combat. Thing is, Origins wasn't really like that either, unless anyone knows a bard's song that puts purply rotating sparkles around your entire party IRL. If anything it was Origins where particle effects got out of control with Arcane Warrior; with Fenris at least in cutscenes his Lyrium Ghost turned off.

Because it looks silly. Why should swinging a sword result in a fireworks display? Reminds of some garbage anime visuals tbh.

The Witcher has always kept it simpler without the explosive stuff that hides all the action and is better for it. Skyrim and Shadow of Mordor also have much less of this ugliness and the combat looks just fine visually. Even previous Dragon Age games have had less randomly expanding colorful particles cluttering up the screen.

This is kind of part of the issue — I feel that people seem to be forgetting that Origins had a bunch of really dumb special effects that you had to manually turn off all the time to not look like an idiot. The combat was massively slow, unrealistically slow. Yes, DA2 was unrealistically fast in the animations and slow in the enemy HP sink, but Origins wasn't much better (it was just the opposite direction). Neither game had gritty, realistic combat, so I fail to see why it would be some kind of expectation.

It just seems like a bunch of people complaining that things aren't brown and grey enough.

I think it's more that the visual effects for non-mages were more "muted". It visually communicated to the player the presence of the buff, but it didn't reach the level of bright and flashy magic spells.

In DA:I, you'd think everyone is a mage, and, at least IMO, it can lead to some confusion. For example, I've seen a rogue power being used multiple times (I think it's backstab), and it literally looks like it has some kind of electricity effect.

I was replaying Origins the other day and the particle effect for rock armour looks like black sweat is falling off your clothing - and Sten swings a greatsword so slowly that it looks weird.

If anything I prefer the way DA:I is doing it, combat needs to be responsive and agile.

Origins had terrible combat and looked awful, this is hardly a "why did you ruin my precious DA look?" post. I was simply hoping for more improvement than what I'm seeing, as far as explosive war hammers and laser-shooting bows. There's nothing dull, brown, and grey about the games I've mentioned in comparison.
