I love FemHawke, especially in sarcastic mode. Obviously Jennifer Hale is a peerless voice actress with amazing versatility, but the idea that somehow Jo Wyatt did a bad job... Not for me. She was excellent.

Sarcastic Hawke is great. However, I feel part of their success is due to people being afraid to say something they didn't intend to when choosing the other options. Damned paraphrasing.Besides, sarcastic Hawke is undoubtedly the one of the best tings Bioware ever done so I'm very excited to have him/her along with my inquisition.

Pardon me, but I wasn't trying to start a competition or compare this person to that person. I only voice my honest opinion that people overestimate Hawke's power. You don't have to get defensive because I wasn't looking for a fight, and I sure didn't criticize Hawke, I only criticize Hawke's fan for glossy overestimate their preferred character's power. You are entitled to your own opinion as I am, but I can see that my opinion is unwelcome so I shall leave.
I was speaking in general, should add that to my post as well.
People do tend to compare warden/Hawke a lot and also overestimate warden.

Well, not me. To tell you the truth, I only criticize the fans, and I don't like it when people want to start a competition on who is better. I know better that it'll lead to endless debate.
I still have my preferred protagonist and it's the Warden since I find that blank sheet easier to RP, and it's allowed me to inject myself into the character so I feel attached to the Warden. However don't get me wrong, I like Hawke too, and I had a lot of fun playing as humorous/sarcastic Hawke, and while Hawke's story is not about saving the world I still think Hawke did many things. I think both heroes are amazing and unique in their own way. So...that's my honest opinion about our previous protagonists, and if I criticize something it would be the fans not the character. ![]()

I always find this really interesting, because it's probably the most divisive thing with regards to the RP community (this isn't an attack on you, AC). Did you grow up playing tabletop games (or do you play a lot now)? I'm just wondering if what we mostly grew up engaged in has a large impact on what we view as an ideal protagonist in RPGs. I just find the blank-slate/self-insert-esque hero versus the (semi-)defined hero interesting with regards to immersion. For example, I find Hawke more immersive precisely because she or he is more defined than the Warden, whereas you find the opposite.
I just find it interesting, because it seems like the types of hero essentially cater to completely different player bases.

I'm expecting one mission, but more would be nice. And yes, snarky!Hawke pls.
I do have questions about male Hawke's hair though, doens't look so good.
I would like it if Hawke in DAI looked like our custom Hawke, but there's many who've used mods which can't carry over in DAI most likely, so they may stick to the default model.

I think they said that if an previous protagonist returns, they will give an CC for them. Anyway, I never liked default male Hawke anyway.

Don't worry about it, and to tell you the truth I didn't play a lot of Tabletop games. However I prefer older RPG games so if that factor count for anything. Hmm, it possibly could have significant impact on our perspective, and what we view as an ideal protagonist in RPGs. I don't know if I can explain every detail correctly so I'm sorry if you didn't get what I'm saying. I prefer to have freedom to create my own character rather than playing a preset character or (semi-) defined character. I always thought when it comes to large RPG games that your PC are highly customizable, and with a lot of freedom, epic story and a huge world for you to dive in. I like the concept of "Be yourself and this is your adventure", so I like to see everything through my own eyes not someone's else eyes.
Well, as I said it's all boil down to an opinion in the end so there is no right or wrong. I still like Hawke or other defined hero protagonist, but I just prefer to play as myself or be able to inject part of myself into blank-slate/self-insert-esque hero. ![]()

The biggest issue I had with sarcastic Hawke was how poorly his voice acting suited what he was saying. Same went for the "seductive" lines he used on his LI (which almost all made me cringe and groan.. seriously).
Don't mind him as a character, and some of his sarcastic stuff is funny (especially in a serious and tense moment), it's just the poor delivery (lack of correct intonation) that kills it for me.
BAMF Hawke was more my thing, though unsuitable with the derpy default face he had.

Maybe it's because I grew up in the chrono trigger/ff7 days, but I have difficulty playing a blank state character. I need to be given a semi-defined character so that I can see that characters 'story' personality and experience it for myself. I preferred hawke for this reason, because I had a semi-defined character who I could experience. I like to just go through the story with a character I'm given, and try out different things with them and find out who they are rather than put myself into the game.
I'm proud to be a filthy casual, who likes to do the bare minimum for character-customisation, or not at all.

Each of their own I suppose. I thought sarcastic male Hawke was the best tone. While I hated diplomatic male Hawke. He was dull and sour. While on the other hand, I liked diplomatic female Hawke. She had that soothing tone to her voice, while the sarcastic tone felt forced and unnatural.

I was raised similarly to you (although I'm English, and thus never got Chrono Trigger, but I did get Terranigma — aka the Best Game Ever, so all's well), but I was raised mainly with console JRPGs where 'RPG' meant 'This game has a plot and some cool characters' as opposed to no plot or characters. I've generally noticed that a lot of the people who prefer the Warden-style protagonists over ones like Hawke tend to have backgrounds in older PC-based WRPGs or tabletop games like DnD (that said, Final Fantasy also has its roots in DnD, so the history is more intertwined than a lot of modern discussion on 'what is an RPG' admits most of the time). Regardless, I'm guessing that the fact I was raised on a definition of 'RPG' as 'Game with a detailed plot with predefined [if often simplistic] characters' means I tend to view predefined characters as less inhibitive to role-playing. Most classic JRPGs tend to be customisation mostly in the form of equipment, after all, rather than narrative. My first customisable protagonist-game was Baldur's Gate (also the first time I ever played as a female hero, a trend which has pretty-much continued to this day).
One of the reasons I liked Hawke so much is because, for me, he or she managed to straddle the fine line between customisation and definitiveness. I could customise Hawke's basic personality (and who their friends were, who their rivals were, who they loved, etc) but at the same time I always felt that Hawke was a particular person in the DA2 narrative, rather than just a player stand-in. I actually think Hawke's relative lack-of-importance in the overarching plot of DA2 actually helped with this a lot. The game seemed less player-centric and more ensemble-cast than other BioWare titles (BG/2, KotOR, DA:O, [probably] DA:I).

I guess it depends on what you consider to be "natural". They were both good in my opinion. I pretty much didn't care for either gender of aggressive or diplomatic hawke. Sarcastic Hawke was the only one for me.
I liked both of them for both reasons you mentioned but liked male Hawke the most for the reason that I felt that the way he spoke made him more like the 'troll of thedas'.

That appears quite likely. I'm used to creating a lot of imaginary traits for my characters and dislike it if I can't play those out even by omission because they clash with a predefined protagonist.
Having said that, Hawke worked for me because there was sufficient freedom in the areas important to me - as opposed to ME's Shepard, where I felt I was almost constantly fighting the writers. If the Warden is still my preferred protagonist of the DA games so far, blame the thrice-damned paraphrasing which prevents me from making informed roleplaying decisions.
