Are there going to be cities in DAI?

It's a better choice. Cities are incredibly hard to do and they just end up being big villages anyway.

Can't agree. I recognize that you won't get decent scale unless you make it the entire map like an AC game, but it definitely adds hints of civilization. I've always been partial to social games, and really Bioware games are more social than most.

And a city seems like it makes a far, FAR better hub than some faction outpost.

maybe they want to surprise us?

Highly doubtful.

I would certainly hope to get to see the white spire up close in this game.

I think at most we will see 'parts' of Val Royeaux, but only during certain quests and it won't be fully explorable.

An open Urban environment similar to Emerald Graves would be very, very difficult to pull off. There would have to be dozens of random npcs walking around, and artificial road blocks to prevent access to the entire city (as the entire city would obviously not fit into even a large zone without an incredible investment of resources).

So one or more linear sections that appears during specific quests seems the most likely outcome, if any.

The worst case is no Val Royeaux at all, but the more likely worst case is cutscene only Val Royeaux.

I may be optimistic, but I am pretty sure we'll see much much more than what they've shown us so far.

Even if they create Denerim faithfully as it was in Origins, I'd be happy.

But there are sure to be some surprises...

I expect that we'll visit Val Royeaux and Halamshiral, and that we'll be able to explore areas representative of some of the cities' different quarters. We'll visit at least one of the palaces - the Imperial Palace in Val Royeaux or the Winter Palace in Halamshiral - though probably not both. I wouldn't expect to visit the Grand Cathedral but it's possible.

Are cities like Denerim and Val Royeaux be available to explore?

Mike Laidlaw ‏@Mike_Laidlaw

There are populated areas, but we're focused more on wilderness this time around.

I'm pretty gutted by the lack of cities this time round...its one thing I've been worrying about since we were never shown them and only a lot of wilderness or ruins.  Denerim and Orzammar for me were some of my favourite places in Origins, I love the atmosphere, the types of quests, all the people.  I'm personally not too excited by a heck of a lot of wilderness...hopefully we still get something similar, even if to a smaller scale.  Like others have suggested, it would be nice to even get to visit at least parts of the cities?

*fingers crossed*

Orzammar was one of my favourite areas in DA:O, but if that has already been confirmed as not in it then could we hope for Kal-Sharok or Kal-Hirol? Kal-Sharok would be great for story reasons, there seems a lot of mystery hidden there.

Kal-Hirol would be good too, maybe we could assist the dwarves in building it up into a functioning city to gain their support?

I am not expecting a massive realistic city. I would be happy in just seeing portions of one. I hope there are some even if they are accessible only on certain quests.

Maybe we will have mission in administrating some lands and cities as well.

It has already been confirmed that we won't be visiting any of the Great Thaigs, so Kal-Sharok is out. Kal-Hirol is not that likely either because we only seem to be visiting the west of Ferelden.

I also feel that the tweet about the wilderness is clear enough to know that we won't be visiting an actual city. It is rather convenient that Val Royeaux' gates seem to be closed in one of the latest books.

And as to the screenshot shown on this page, that is Halamshiral. I think there is a good chance we will only be able to visit the winter palace and the palace grounds and not much else. We have already been shown the inside of the winter palace at Halamshiral and this is where the ball takes place, not in Val Royeaux.

If DAI featured actual cities even just a section of one BioWare would have shown us by now. There is no good reason to keep something like that a secret until release.

It is not that I don't want to see an actual city, I absolutely do but there has been no signs of us actually being able to visit a city and there have been many signs we won't get to visit one.

Even AC games have been rather lousy when it comes to scale for actual cities. ACU will potentially be the first one yet to really evoke that since of scale since Paris is being built almost to a 1:1 scale. Honestly though, BioWare has no tradition of size or scale in any of their games. They'd have to receive tips from Rockstar or BGS to really get a sense of how to make a city sprawling and bustling with activity. Skyhold is rather dense and active, even if it's only for the Inqusition.

Also, Kal-Sharok is in the Hunterhorn Mountains, between the Anderfels and the Imperium. It's...kind of off the map.

Maybe they just haven't showed much city footage yet because of spoilers. I remember in ME2 and ME3 where there are plenty of returning characters depending on what actions were taken. Showing city footage might make somebody change their decisions early instead of figuring it out for themselves, and nobody would like any surprises ruined. Also they just wanna show the action off.

Restricted slices of cities maybe (or are we meeting Celene/ attending Orlesian ball in a cave somewhere?), but seeing as they are focusing so much effort on Skyhold, I think it's safe to say that even something along the lines of Denerim is out of the picture.

I remember an older preview showing the party running towards what looked like a city... Looked like orlais. Sorry for not linking anything but I'm certain there's at least that one city.

Would be great to go back to Redcliffe, Denerim and also to see how Lothering is doing these Days.

AND PEOPLE:

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop giving EA/Bioware bad Ideas! NO DLC'S!!!!

AddOn's which means:

-New Area(s)

-New Plots advancing / giving background Infos for Main Story Quests, Chars or filling Gaps of the bigger Side Quests

-Full Voice Over

-Minimum Length: 12-15 Hours

Just like in the old Days where we got something worthy for our Money. That is something I am probably ok with - depending on the Content.

A really good Example of a real AddOn, is the Expansion "Night of the Raven" for the RPG Gothic 2. THAT is a REAL AddOn  . Not some overpriced DLC to get one more color for your Mount - wink wink Oblivion

//Sorry for getting a little OffTopic here... :)

There were early concept arts/screen shots of a gate into Val Royeaux, whether that remains in game remains to be seen.

Since Orlesian politics will play a significant role DA:I, it would be strange if they completely sidestepped Val Royeaux. That's like having a New York Mafia story that takes place entirely in the suburbs.

Don't like it, don't buy it. I'm more than willing to shell out additional money for small things I like, like additional mounts, outfits or weapons, especially since it helps them monetize a game with about 10-20 times the single player content of other AAA games for the exact same $60 price tag.

this is the trailer I was talking about, at 1:31

It looks like the entrance to a city, you can't see the whole thing but that's what it looks like to me.

Cities are also a defining feature of most triple A RPGs these days. BioWare has a history of making more static worlds but if they failed to include something similar to Denerim from DA:O, I think a lot of players would be disappointed.

It certainly looks like we won't see a sprawling city, otherwise we would have had it confirmed by a dev already, but it's not really a 'better' choice. Some people will like/ hate it either way.

There's no triple A RPG that's included anything worth considering a city. Skyrim has villages that pretend to be cities. DS1-2 have what you might call city ruins, but they're not proper cities in the way this thread talks about them.

Still hoping for Kal-Sharok, but I doubt it.

I believe they Confirmed we will not be seeing Kal-Sharok.

Also we saw Screen shots of Val Royeaux but i don't think we will be seeing too many cities, maybe Halmirshal, or Jader, Val Chevin. those are the major ones i know of.

Didn't we see an operation at the gamescon demo that said "Speak to the Grand Clerics" and it was over Val Royeaux.
