In a BioWare game, that hasn't happened years. Plus, I'm only speaking of BioWare games, not all video games as a whole. I wanted to make that clear.
If BioWare was to only do straight characters, yes it would break my immersion completely. For other companies, it depends upon the game.
Edit: I should probably give an example. In the RE games, one of the villains turns out to be gay, crazy and evil. He's the only gay character stated as such in the series that is a prominent character. The heroes, on the other hand, are shown as straight (sometimes talking about a relationship with someone of the opposite gender) or not stated as LGBT by their developers. I have a problem with an all straight-cast of heroes if the only LGBT representation is of a reoccurring villain.
It breaks my immersion that in that entire world, out of all the people that S.T.A.R.S and Umbrella corp have gotten involved with this mess, the only one stated to be gay is a bad guy.
Well SWTOR is not that old, to tell you the true nothing breaks my immersion, if the characters makes sense in game.
The problem is that my tolerance for the typical "white straight male" type of character with brown hair and stubble is really low. Stories with diverse characters are a lot more compelling, especially on RPGs. I liked the last Lord of the Rings game but not for the story, the combat a lone is great.
That said there is no valid reason to make a character this or that sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity.. etc but it sure helps flesh them out, having too many the same type of characters especially on lvl design is really sad and makes me sleepy.
