I would HIGHLY recommend reading Dragon Age: Asunder before playing Inquisition.

The characters and the events that take place in Asunder are a HUGE part of Inquisition. The book also includes some appearances by characters you would know from the video games. Beyond that, the book is just damn good on its own. I really enjoyed it and I hope anyone who takes my suggestion does too. HIGHLY recommended.

Does anyone have any suggestions on another book that would be somewhat important to the plot of Inquisition? Though I'm sure none reach the importance of Asunder for it, I still would like to experience it before indulging myself into the game.

The Masked Empire is connected to DAI as well, since it's about what's going on in Orlais and we'll go there and probably resolve its issues in DAI. The Last Flight is also an interesting read that talks about events that happen after DA2 (though it talks about the past as well) and is probably connected to DAI too since we know that the Wardens will play a part in DAI too.

You could try Last Flight I'm about halfway through but its direct ties to Inquisition seem...small.

Also am I the only one who did a mental backflip at the

I would hope the novel is not at all required for the game's story and characters to work.

If it is, then I would actually be quite critical of that.

It isn't required but it does give really good insight on certain plot arcs

Audible is your friend. Do other things while you listen.

I'm sure if the books are a huge part of Inquisition's story, then they'll be acknowledged within the game.

That being said, Asunder and Masked Empire at currently in my amazon wishlist, I really do want to check them out.

The book isn't mandatory but there's a quite significant amount of development and events happening. I would at least, maybe, look up a summary of the plot if you do not wish to read a book. Though still, I highly recommended reading it regardless.

If nothing else, read Asunder because it's a genuinely good book. Well written, good dialogue, and Rhys, Lambert, and Cole are my favorite male characters in the series. Cole above all though.

This. Really don't want additional requirements to play this game.

Yes definitely read the books, they make the games more enjoyable well for me they did but they aren't critical to the games story just if you want some extra background explanation.

Asunder is critical to learning all the big facts about the original Cole and how he died. Plus, it's pretty much where the only place to learn about Cole

I actually don't need to know all about Cole to be able to interact with him in DA:I and he may well cover at least some of that stuff as part of the game.

I don't care about this whole MagesVSTemplars conflict enough to read a whole dang book about it

For Shale and Wynne though I should probably try

Like I said earlier, even if you don't want to read the book you should at least try to find a summary of the plot in my opinion. It's not core to the game, but it would add a lot of important story to your story-driven game.

Never meant to imply you have to go all Cassandra and find out the true accounts of his history and such, haha. It's just that it's a nice place to start learning about him. And unless we walk the Fade, we're not gonna get the best experience of.. Technically his "past". He's sure to talk about it but if they go to the extent that they did in the book, I'll be very happily surprised.

Definitely read Masked Empire. There is only so much you can go into a character in game, and I've a feeling no matter how much they go into Celene and Gaspard in the game itself, you won't really know or get the true nature of these pretty complex characters without the context and characterization they get throughout the book.

Asunder was such a good book. I've read mixed reviews on the other two books following it which is why I haven't red them yet. If anything I want to read Last Flight because it ties into the Grey Wardens but Asunder might be more related to DA:I.

Yeah, one of our stores gives a copy of Asunder free with any DAI pre-order. (Un)fortunately, I already own all DA novels.

Yep, I'd say Asunder and The Masked Empire are "must reads" in the sense that... if you love the series and you love the setting, they provide unique insight into what all we'll be seeing and doing in Inquisition. Plus, they're enjoyable and if you're anything like me, you can't get enough DA lore.

They're not "must reads" in the sense that you have to read them to understand the game, however. So if for some reason you really hate books (...wut?) it's not like you HAVE to read them. I'm sure Cole will tell us all about himself, 9000 NPCs will comment on the mage/Templar conflict, the Orlesian Civil War, elven uprisings, etc.

My Inquisitor is a Trevelyan non-Mage who doesn't know what happened at White Spire and doesn't know any of the characters in the book so to be in character I will not read the book.

yeah, it is a good read. Wynne appears in there. Anyway, the reason Wynne appears is because she cannot die no matter what right? Because she has a spirit inside her?

This.

I read The Stolen Throne and The Calling after having played DA:O and DA:A.  I had a completely different experience when I did another playthrough based on the new knowledge that I had regarding both Loghain and the Architect.
