I would HIGHLY recommend reading Dragon Age: Asunder before playing Inquisition.

Audible is your friend. Do other things while you listen.

If I'm doing other things, I am by extension not listening.

I actually got asunder so I could find out more about Cole and decide if I would want him around.

after reading it, I am still unsure. but I loved the book in general. I lent the copy to a friend so she could make up her mind... but she has to finish DA2 first.

Now I'm trying to track down a copy of the masked empire, so I can make up my mind about Celene.

I have nothing against additional media in a franchise.

I am strongly against additional media that is required to have context for the primary media. If I have to consult the supplemental material in additional media prior to enjoying the next installment of primary media because otherwise crucial context or knowledge is not provided, then something has gone very wrong in either development or editting.

For example, if the primary medium is film, I should not have to read supplemental material in order to appreciate and understand the story, the characters, or the setting. If the primary medium is literature, I should not have to watch short films on the web to understand the next book.

Ergo...

I should not have to read a Star Wars novel in order to appreciate a Star Wars film. Film is the primary media for Star Wars. I've got nothing against the novels. But I shouldn't have to read them in order to follow the events, characters, and changed in setting to the films.

Similarly, I honestly don't care how good Dragon Age Asunder is. It may be fantastic. Its quality, however, is utterly inconsequential. I shouldn't have to read it in order to enjoy Dragon Age Inquisition. If I have to, then Inquisition has failed.

So...if I play Inquisition, and things are left unexplained or uncertain, and the general response to my questions on those issues is "You would have known this had you read Asunder," then I am going to be very, very cross.

Very, very cross, indeed.

Now, I don't expect this to happen. The Dragon Age and Mass Effect teams have been pretty good about leaving the novels as supplemental material not nothing that is required (though the manner in which Kahlee Sander's and Kai Leng's were included in Mass Effect 3 is questionable).

I have my copy of the book, but it's just sitting on my bookshelf collecting dust. Sigh... I have no time to read it.

Really want to read all of the books and maybe the comics if I can find them. It would have to be after the game comes out though which sucks.

Not necessarily! Just think of it like a prequel. Like reading The Stolen Throne after finishing DAO.

They're not "must reads" in the sense that you have to read them to understand the game, however. So if for some reason you really hate books (...wut?) it's not like you HAVE to read them. I'm sure Cole will tell us all about himself, 9000 NPCs will comment on the mage/Templar conflict, the Orlesian Civil War, elven uprisings, etc.

As far as I know, Cole is not a very talkative person and half of his words lead to misunderstanding, so it’s probably the best to read it by yourself.

Personally, I love books more than games. XD
