DA:I soundtrack so far is a bit too generic.

It feels like something you would her out of a typical fantasy game or series. There is nothing there in the theme that says:- "This is Dragon Age". It is not very iconic. IMO, the DA:I soundtracks I have heard so far serve very well as a good background music but as a main them, no, not really.

To be clear, I do not think that the soundtrack is bad. It is good but it generic.

DA:O on the other hand was very distinct. It was something you could associate with Dragon Age and Dragon Age alone. It stood out.

Maybe I will change my mind about DA:I's soundtrack when I hear more. For now, I prefer DA:O.

Except that it was straight out of LotR, sure.

The Aubrey Ashburn stuff I agree is distinctive, though. Here is the track that actually feels the most "Dragon Agey" to me:

DAI's stuff may be generic in that the genre is very familiar, but the rhythms are memorable and exciting, and I find the tone much more emotive. Other than Ashley auburn's voice, nothing in DAO sticks out to me.

I agree that all three scores seems to have a different character, but as with the game quality  goes the music quality: the second one was the weakest link with the less memorable tunes.

Nevertheless I really like the hammering sound of the Deep Roads in DA:O:

Trevor Morris by miles. Reminds me of Audiomachine, who I love to listen to.

(and at the end of Faith in Ashes, you can hear that distinctive beginning to DA2s theme)

I love the new main title.  The drum beats in the middle part just make the blood flow, feels pretty majestic.

I think all of the soundtracks have been really good, but I am really grooving on the just straight up badassness of the new tracks.

I give it 3 snaps in a Z formation.

My opinion:

Spoiler

Interesting, when I hear the DAI Redcliffe tune, I hear grit, I hear tension, I hear dread. Its minimalism gives it a quiet yet unnerving anticipation for something dramatic up ahead. DAO's Redcliffe tune sounds like it's trying to be menacing, but it isn't working.

So yeah, whatever floats your boat.

Trevor Morris, but lets see how I feel after I hear the music on repeat while playing the game.  It's denser, richer.. perhaps not as signature so far, but more polished to a point that it almost comes off effortless which has strengths and weaknesses.

I love the music of the new game, very much looking forward to hearing it through key moments and even ambiance.

I have acutally been listening to the new theme all day today. Here is my take on it.

The DAO soundtrack was perfect for that game.  It had this lonely, mournful sound to it that fit the tone of that game.  In the story, you are rather isolated, no matter what your orgin story was.  Cousland grieving about family, Dalish elf separted from the clan, mage at odds with the world, etc etc.  The music resonated that lonley quality.  In the game, sure, you recruit folks, even romance folks, but I always felt strangely alone in it.  Then, at the end, escpecailly if you chose the ulimate sacrfice, that music is running through your mind as you do it.  You were the warden, and your story was meant to be bitterweet. Dying young to save the world.

DA2 was a little different, a different tone.  You were a hero by accident, just a person trying to help your familty out.  But the world is on the brink of craziness and you get caught up in it.  I always felt that the music didn't quite fit that game, that it should have been less mournful and mysterious and more exciting.  But in general, it was a rather shallow game, so maybe the music was too good for it, really.  it was too similar to DAO's, but the overall tone of the story itself did not measure up the music.

DAI's soundtrack is friggen epic!  And it goes away from the sad, lonley sound of the other two.  But from what I can tell so far, it should.  This game is about leading armies, after all.  It is about saving the world, but not having to do it all alone or against all the odds.  You have power in this game.  Lots.  And you are trying to save the world. The music has me pumped for it.  But even still, even with that epic sound, it still has those little bittersweet notes, particulalry in the beginning.  I think it hints at tragedy, at a tenderness that these stories always seem to have, the personal side that makes them so addictive.  So...I think the music matches what the game is supposed to be and thus I am personally fine with it.  in fact, I love the new music...

There...my two cents...

I think it is kind of a toss up which is best and I think it is more about each game. DAO theme fit DAO story well, DAI theme works for DAI.

As for exploration music and the rest, I believe Trevor Morris wins.

DAO theme fits how that game is, a huge blight that overrun the world of thedas.

DAI, feels more like the world hasn't turned to Sh*t yet, nice areas not all burnt down, but still a looming threat, but not as imminent and overpowering.

I still like the Trevor music, it's just that it lacks a pure signature for the game series like DAO has, but that can change. The DAO theme sort of put a mark on it and made it sound like it's own and not generic.

For example Elderscroll games have a pretty good theme going.

Morrowind and Skyrim having the same theme with some changes. Oblivion changing it up but still feeling like an Elderscroll game. Could be because Jeremy Soule made the music for all three (I think).

I just feel when I hear the DAO main theme even though I haven't played the game since 2009 it instantly clicks, it created that atmosphere and signature.

DAI them might do the same in a sequel, but for now, even though good, it is also somewhat generic.

Inon Zur wasn't the best, but some of his songs, especially this one, give me goosebumps every time.

The only strange things so far is that you haven't noticed people are discussing specific pieces of music. Most have said that the totality of the soundtrack cannot yet be evaluated. Pay attention, dude/dudette.

Fighting about which soundtrack is the best when people didn't hear all songs from one of them is strange. I'm sorry if you don't understand that, "dude/dudette". Using gif spam doesn't strengthen your position.

You may want to read what I said, instead of responding to something I didn't say. Did the phrase "specific pieces of music" escape you?

That's because three of the new songs have already shown just how awful two entire soundtracks really were.

I always found Zur's instrumentation to be super shallow. It never sounds particularly full or vibrant to me because of that.

I don't know why are you so angry and bitter. You can think you won the argument, I don't really care.

It's interesting you went to anger. I was bringing up a point, which is a part of discussion. I guess discussing things = angry in your world. I asked you a question that you still haven't answered, since you posted in this thread making assumptions. I would have thought you may be reassured that most folks are discussing specific pieces of each soundtrack, using examples of what they do and don't like about each one. I've been following the thread, I can help you out with this, and perhaps help you stop making assumptions.

I've heard people say that they think the new DA: I sounds like generic fantasy but I disagree. While the DA: O theme was cool, its as generic as it gets. And the rest of the soundtrack is completely forgettable.

I'm hoping the DA: I theme is a sign that this new soundtrack will be more memorable.
