My expectations for the Dragon Age series have always been sky high, and from the very beginning I regarded DA:I as something of a last chance for Bioware; last chance to show me they're still same company that made KOTOR and Neverwinter Nights. Mass Effect 3, and the Citadel DLC in particular, softened my stance a little, but I'll still be picking this game apart from top to bottom with extreme scrutiny.
Therefore, minimum of acceptability is a slight disappointment - as long as it's not another Dragon Age II, it's fine. Very hard to par, and probably impossible to exceed.

Hype left my world when I played and finished Dragon Age 2 and honestly has never come back. I posted a lot on the old boards because I loved Bioware products but a combination of their recent work and other changes made me take multiple steps back.
I know next to nothing about this game so I can't be disappointed in anything I've read or see. It'll either confirm what I think the game is going to end up being or it may surprise me and be pretty decent.
Deep down inside I want to see Bioware do good. No matter how I feel now they are responsible or for introducing me to PC gaming and for that I'm very grateful. I know they don't know that but I thank them for that from the bottom of my heart. That being said, I'm cautious about this game and really, really hope I'm not wasting $70.

Oh pretty easily. My hype isn't that high. First, other than perusing this forum occasionally, I don't watch the videos, interviews, etc. Far too many spoilers for things that I want to experience myself. Secondly, there is a number of changes to this game. While MANY of them are great (correcting issues from DA2), there is still some concern about the direction of others (8 slot limit/no auto-attack in action cam).
I am definitely looking forward to the game and I am sure I will be playing it for several months straight.

No, it can't. While I was never expecting Dragon Age Origins 2, I was hoping for a return to the flexibility that game offered in terms of character builds - stat allocation, weapon choice, armor choice. It wasn't unreasonable, given that Bioware did the same "simplification" for Mass Effect 2, but fixed it due to the feedback they'd gotten. Say what you will about ME3, but the weapon/armor/upgrade system is the best in the trilogy. No restrictions, weapons opened up to all classes, a robust upgrade/customization system, and classes that managed to feel distinct despite there being six of them. Surely, Bioware could do the same with Dragon Age, which only has three.
What I've gotten is Dragon Age 2 with a prettier paint job. Same weapon restrictions, same armor restrictions, only now with a crafting system that people are praising to high heaven that will apparently fix every single issue about the game despite somehow being optional.
Now, I did enjoy DA2 for what it was. I still play it a bit, and I thought it did improve in certain areas. However, the fact it nailed your character into a box that you can't climb out of hasn't been addressed at all. It isn't necessarily about sub-optimal builds like people will claim ("You just want to make a Cunning / Magic Warrior and gimp yourself!") - it's about viable options that Bioware's seen fit to remove wholesale for no reason.
While I do still hold out hope for it, I can't lie that the last five or so months of reveals haven't been one constant disappointment after another.

Expectations are what I set for myself; my own goals and aspirations are meant to be forged by my effort(s) to a desired end.
Excitement is what I set for the value of something that is not my own, but I take a vested interest in. Dragon Age, is a franchise born of the effort and love and abilities of a group of individuals and as such should only meet the "expectations" of their own hearts. This is a wonderful franchise that never had to be created, but it was and it captured my imagination and "fan-hood" because of the appreciation on display to their efforts.
There truly are few things more immature and inane than all the crying baby, butt-hurt statements made by supposed "fans" of their UTTER disappointment in the multitude of imagined slights within something they claim to profusely "love" and be a fan of. No one is FORCED to buy a single property from any developer, and so it may be well past time these "fans" stop displacing such petty grievances as monumental "ruined my soul and expectations" types of problems.
This does not absolve the notion that one can't be "disappointed" in an element that may have changed ( change to combat system is hard to get a handle on, miss certain spells or specializations, etc., etc.,) But in the end, this rather amazing franchise is the soul, sweat and tears of many talented people that never had to create THIS franchise, but they did and it is amazing.
Not that a single post will do much other than possibly instigate criticism, intelligent debate or flat out idiocy, but perhaps... just perhaps its time people drop this notion of grand entitlement for expectation, and instead see it with fresh excitement, or if nothing else, indifferent curiosity. Because unless you can honestly get off your lazy butt cheeks and do better, creating a franchise RPG fantasy world that is critically acclaimed the world over with ZERO negative criticism, then how about this: 1) Remove head from ass so you stop talking shitzu 2) Try and appreciate something as it is. Yes you may be paying for a game, and like a restaurant when you pay for your meal you "expect" the meal to be good.. but entertainment is not a meal, it is product of effort, a gift that you are not forced to buy, but are free to enjoy! So try that.. Enjoy!

A big issue this year is games that people feel are overhyped. You'll see people use this term for Titanfall, Watch Dogs and Destiny. One common thread I see among these type of fans is that they are the type who listened to every interview, read every article, played the beta and was generally aware of the advertising hype. I'm assuming there are people who are reading this that have been discussing this game since before this site was a site. For those type of people, what do you expect the game to be at this point? Do you feel that Bioware can deliver on your expectations? I know this is a purely speculative thread about subjective opinions, but I will admit that the effects of large advertising budgets interests me.
At this point, how confident are you that DA:I will live up to your every expectation.
(P.S, I'm not saying companies are blameless. There has been a lot of promising that hasn't come true lately.)
Gameplay is key 1.
Next is immersion of the enviroment do I want to spend time doing nothing here in this landscape?
Just sit around sipping wine and listen to birds?
Star wars for example lacked enviroment and immersion.
Visually games been bland as far, blocky graphics and not made for high end gaming PC machines.
we have multicores and 4 cards and more memory I can count and I am stuck with designs for consol?
Good enough gameplay, superb visuals and I gladly upgrade my computer to enjoy such visual stunning experience.
since dai is first of more games to come from the same engine I do hope they have such scaling built in like BF4 has.
then you can scale up the game visually.
but disappointed with dai? nah not likely seems to be game of the next year.

I really don't have any hype for this game (I use to), I hope its the second coming of BG1-2 and DAO (but I doubt it), the more I see that they rolled over from DA2 and along with the new changes (stats, healing, no auto-attack or point and click movement out of tac cam) the less I feel that I will enjoy it.

I'm optimistic, and super hyped. I'm excited in general - even if there were a few tiny personal disapointments, overall I think it will be amazing. The devs are excited, and they seem really proud of their work, which makes me excited for them.
I'm really looking forward to this.

I ordered not one but Two copies of the deluxe edition (I have a son old enough to play their games) and the hardcover game guide. I ordered my adorable mabari plush to keep me company throughout the game playing and I've done extra projects to clear my calendar for the rest of the month after it's release, lol. I'm over 40 and don't usually like video games at all... until I discovered Bioware games.
I don't care about the hype being bandied about as it's a BIOWARE RPG and so far, they haven't let me down in either the DA or Me universes. Did I love everything in the games? Nope, but I rarely love everything in a book either.
Is it November 18th yet??

It depends: If your hype is expecting above and beyond and more of what you seen thus far, then no it will not live up to your hype. If your hype is on level with what has been presented so far, then yes it will live up to your hype.
In short, YMMV(Your Mileage May Vary)
For me yes it will live up to it because I enjoyed everything they have shown thus far and can't wait for Nov. 18 ![]()

This is hardly a generational issue. I remember when DAO was released and the large complaints about how dark spawn looked lifted from lord of the rings (movies were big) and how it was not a true baldurs gate successor. Expectations were set at unrealistic levels even back then.
I like bioware games, some I like more then others, I am hyped , and I will like DAI most likely.
DA:O lived up to the hype, both sales and critical/player reception show that.

I do not believe DAI will be flawless. Question is: will it have the issues that plagued DA2 (repeatability of environments, complete railroad of a plot*) and ME3 (inconsistencies in story, awful ending). If not, I will be quite happy. Based on all prior Bioware games, I have confidence that other parts of the game (character development, gameplay) will not be murdered too badly. So yes, I think DAI has a good chance of living up to my current hype level.
*I know that KOTOR, all DA and ME games had a railroad plot, DA2 just had a railroad plot which you felt no control over. For some reason in DAO even though the final outcome was preset (AD dies), getting to that point did not feel anywhere near as linear as in DA2.
EDIT: Wanted to add to the post above. ANY game will have people complaining after the release. It will happen no matter how amazing the game is. Question is how important and game-breaking the complaints are. There is a huge difference between people whining about not liking casual outfit and the fact that the gameplay or game ending was butchered.

I have rarely played a game which didn't fall short of my expectations in some way(Samarai Warriors empires 2 being the exception) thats mainly because any game no matter how well made is ever going tick all my boxes for "what I wanted in a game" however I will admit in Bioware's case more often than not they have come pretty damn close which is why I tend to throw my money at them when they announce a new game.
Currently i'm really excited for this game i know I will find one or two things that will bug me about perfection is an illusion after all and humanity is incapable of achieving it and since the devs are human (I think) I simply expect the Game meet Bioware's pretty high standards.
I mean honestly have these people ever made a bad game?

Cough, Cough...DA2 ME3 the OC in NWN1, yeah they have made bad games, but even a bad bio game (as much as I hate a bad bio game) is still better than another dev team's bad game....

I'm pretty sure Bioware learned their lesson from DA2, (recycled environments, wave style combat). I would be surprised if this iteration was a total flop. In the end its about quality rather than quantity but I'm curious to see how DA:I ends up. I have high hopes since this is my most anticipated title this year (next to the Master Chief Collection). My only question left is should I get it on PC or console (PS4 or Xbox One).
