To be honest, I hope they never go to showing genitals. I hope Bioware has more class than that.

There's nothing wrong with showing genitals. It would depend on how BioWare depicts them and whether it's in a way that's tasteful or not.

Feel free to re-read my posts. I never once stated DAI was going to have full-frontal nudity or show the male or female genitalia exposed. What I did say, in regards to males, was that it would likely take BioWare more time (in terms of years) to show anything more compared to Rockstar who love to show the male genitalia.

Anyhow, I'm sure that if Bioware decides to show genitalia of any kind in the future, it will be equal for both gendes. With Great Respect.

More than likely. When dealing with sexuality, BioWare tries to keep things equal as best they can. The larger question though is what would be the particular reason for showing them? At some point we begin to blur the line between depicting sexual intercourse in an appropriate way and getting something much closer to GTA: SA's absurd and ridiculous Hot Coffee.

What's not classy about a natural part of a person's body?

I can't think of any games that have handled it tastefully, thus showing them in video games is not classy to me.

To be honest, I see no meaningful difference between seeing Triss being shown full-frontal nude and, say, Dorian being shown lounging around naked after the sex scene, similar to how she was. I doubt anyone is expecting genitals shown during intercourse.

This thread has eaten all my likes this fine Friday morning!

For those who's cheeks are coloured red at those lines it's clear you've never read a Bioware kink meme story on live journal! Those are... Um well, yeah. Heh.

Seriously though, those lines out of context, are hilariously ridiculous, in context, when considering who might utter them, are just hilarious.

Ha! I had one of those as a kid. My first console even, until I got a PlayStation a few years later (played Nintendo and Sega at friends' houses though, and I played on the Brick looong before my age hit double digits).

Anyway, this thread is highly entertaining and I'm trying not to use up all my likes.

Guys, I think we're missing the big picture here: the ESRB should be taken to task for posting pre-release spoilers! I think reviewers should be required to sign NDAs in regards to their reviews from now on. :P

Outlast had full frontal male nudity and I thought it was done rather tastefully. (Given that you are the only sane person in an insane asylum where a bunch of crazed patients are raping dead inmates that they killed brutally)

really? come on the most we will see will be breasts, Nudity is on the rating list the ones who are having a problem with this need to chill out and be adults about this, if you really have a problem with nudity either don't buy the game or don't romance anyone simple as that <.<

You are missing the point though. Romance isn't supposed to be comical in BioWare games or The Witcher. GTA, which is a franchise that rarely takes itself seriously, fits that tone perfectly. It would be out of place for Dragon Age or The Witcher to just fade to black with awkward moaning.

No, I haven't missed the point, you're well aware of what I was on about, but you felt like putting a twist to my words to infer that I said something absurd and derailing the discussion. The argument was that the Witcher 2's scenes are so terribly animated and edited that it both sounds and looks like a poorly optimized-pornographic-machinima, where the actual sex and moaning is so out of tune with the animations that it becomes unintentionally hilarious -- from that understanding, they might as well have done a "cut to black" to make it at least less comical.

Characters use swords, axes, hammers, and magic attacks to kill fantastical creatures (e.g., demons, monsters, dwarfs) and humans in melee-style combat

I'm calling it now: someone will make a thread about how concerned they are that ranged combat has been removed from the game.

GTA IV was a bit of an exception to Rockstar's general rule, although even that game was generally comical and over-the-top in various places based on the ridiculous characters and situations Niko would find himself in.

Comical as in the radio stations, and the occasional funny character -- How in any way is that different from BioWare? Or any developer? Disregarding that, and one will notice that everything else in the game, consisted entirely of a whole bunch of gray and brown noise all centered around Niko Bellic's melancholic journey of betrayals and vendettas. There's that usual irony and occasional satire, hidden beneath the overarching lumpy story, but it's common for a lot of games, and it doesn't dispute the fact that the story itself was one 100 % gritty-brown-seriousness. You don't have access to the over-the-top weapons anymore, or vehicles, there are no tanks, no jetplanes or crazy things like Jetpacks -- There's only Niko Bellic in his washed up Serbian jacket, and American cap, sitting on a couch watching bad television to perhaps brighten up his miserable life a bit, trying to fit in with an uncomfortable crowd of thieves and lunatics which takes him down a dark road. The story speaks for itself as it progresses- The idea is that Niko, unlike the other protagonists, has a reason for coming to LC that doesn't involve getting pretty girls and fast cars, but he's on a revenge mission to avenge his old dead war buddies -- So it's a story of betrayal and Niko trying to find redemption from crime but envitably gets pulled in by the lunatics he surrounds himself with -- Like every Rockstar game, except this time it's done without the tongue in cheek, or Niko not being able to wise-crack him out of bad situations that will lead to people he love getting killed. It is quite serious, indeed.

The only serious game in recent memory that Rockstar developed was Red Dead Redemption, and that wasn't even done by Rockstar North (GTA devs).

How does that dispute anything? It's like trying not to hold BioWare accountable for the development of the Citadel DLC because it was not made by the Dragon Age team. It'sstill Rockstar. Unless I was implying something else in my previous post, which by looking back we can see that I wasn't -- And thus conclude that ultimately, the game was created by Rockstar.

GTA V is another perfect example of a game that doesn't take itself seriously at all. It's certainly not as ridiculous as Saint's Row, but I doubt many would argue GTA is really a serious franchise either. Yes, there are occasionally some serious underlining themes, but they are generally drowned out by all the nonsense and crazy scenarios that happen above and more sporadically.

It's quite interesting how you can say this and then actually say the below part..

I never actually played the Citadel DLC, so I can't comment on what BioWare may or may not have done. I can only comment on the tone of their main stories, which have always been serious either dealing with morality, social issues, moral dilemmas, friendships and rivalries, sacrifice and tragedy, etc. I think you would find few would agree with you that BioWare isn't serious 95% of the time. I can only think of a few instances BioWare used humor just to break the ice of an already serious situation in many of their games.

What parts of these subjects didn't you find in GTA's story? There is friendship in GTA V -- The friendship between Michael and Franklin, Niko's friendship to his cousin, to characters like Brucie or Jacob, and the rusty relationship Michael has with Trevor and his family, trying to juggle both, as Trevor discovers his old buddy is still alive because as it turns out.. he sold him out. So when Trevor figures it all out, then stuff starts to hit the fan. Admittedly yes, GTA V has an armada of silly characters that act like caricatures of American pop-culture, but even games like Metal Gear has this, while simultaneous having a main story discussing human philosophy with messages of anti-war and nuclear weaponry.
GTA IV has everything you mentioned above. It's got the rivalries, it's got the friendships, it's even got the allusiveness to morality, like Niko trying to struggle with how to settle himself in for a normal life, or Michael trying to avoid crime and live normally with his family until he gets pulled in again -- And of course there's the torture scene in GTA V, where the game tries to send a message about the absurd futility of torture and grotesque pointless endeavor of it all, in all of its horror. It does this through sociopathic characters like Trevor, who quite literally points out why torture is used, despite the fact that you can easily extract the same information from a person through other means. You can choose to argue whether or not you find it all to be in good taste or not, whether you feel you agree or whether you feel the developers don't provide a clear and thorough enough image to get the point across and initiate discussion. But don't try to pretend that none of it wasn't present in any of the games -- Because they were.

You're also acting as if BioWare don't have its own share of ridiculously preposterous elements of their own -- The Terminator Reaper, that Metropolis-inspired robot EDI later acquires, Kai-Leng, the absurd aliens like the Hanar (floating-talking jelly fish), Elcor, Space Ninjas who flips and flops all over the place, deflecting bullets with their swords, Bond Villains in the form of the Illusive Man or that one character from the Citadel DLC etc. How can you dispute elements like this and say Rockstar's games aren't serious, when their last couple of games have basically spend all their time exchanging dialogue on human philosophy, telling tales of revenge and redemption with even the inclusion of depths within morality? It baffles me, really.

The thing is that if you want to make a statement about something then there's several different ways to do it. Suda51 tends to use wacky humor and pop culture to raise interesting points of social commentary with games like Killer7, Metal Gear discusses anti-nuclear war and whether human beings can be deciphered and controlled through genes and information, The Witcher & Deus Ex both discuss human philosophy in their own unique ways.
It's all there, but it's all delivered differently and thus not all people will find all of it compelling, how it is told or how it is pictured.

But anyway, that's all I have to say, let's not derail things further.
