But joking aside, looking at the previous ESRB rating examples makes it kinda obvious the examples are taken out of context (they call Mordin's line "krogan sexual deviants enjoy salarian flexibility" a "suggestive comment" which... yeah) so a mountain of salt is the recommended condiment with this particular dish.

 

On a relatede note, I highly encourage people to go the ESRB website to check out their rating information. I haven't laughed this hard in ages.

I have to say, I find this comic to be amazingly accurate right now.  This = how many people on BSN have reacted to the ESRB blurb. (That being said, this post is not intended to provoke/ridicule anyone's feelings.  I just find the comic funny.  And relevant.)

Kotaku really is the worst video game reporter on the internet. I have never once found an article or a review of a game to have substance or a reasonable explanation. It's all ignorance, bias, fanboyism, and constant trolling. I'd probably place Game Informer right after them, as half their articles are generally ridiculous as well.

 

I'm really going to be surprised if any of the main characters use any of those lines provided by the ESRB. It's either purely for comedic value or it was a random conversation happening between NPCs in a brothel somewhere or out in the world. Unless BioWare is just intentionally poking fun at their terrible romance scenes these past seven years...

Yeah, ESRB cherry picks what it considers offensive and thus the description is a complete deformation of what the game actually is.

 

For example, the description for Ms Splosion man put an incredible emphasis on the suggestive valley-girl flavor lines of the protagonist, but in game, it's barely a background noise.

 

Somebody in this thead pointed out previously (sorry, can't find the post) that they make their decisions based on a "highlight reel" which the game developers have put together, and that it's actually in the studio's best interest to include *everything* that might be offensive, since sneaking stuff past the ESRB is considered a very, very dumb thing to do ("instances of significant or egregious content non-disclosure" can lead to fines / product recall according to the ESRB's website, and the smaller stuff isn't all that fun, either).

 

So it's logical that since they only see the "offensive stuff", that's what they focus on. Sure, it seems a bit ridiculous that a game that has around 100+ h of content (if I member correctly) gets flagged for showing a side-boob and some a*s, but if the 5-10 min "most offensive" video is the only thing they see, it's only natural that the evaluation comes off as hilariously pearl-clutch-y.

ESRB doesn't actually play the game, it would take far too long to explore all the permutations. The developer sends them what amounts to a "highlights reel" to watch and rate. It's in the developer's interest to include the most (potentially) offensive stuff, because the ratings board will take notice if they get complaints about stuff that wasn't accounted for.

For all we know, the sample lines could appear for only 1% of players. They represent the most extreme stuff that exists in the game, not necessarily what an average player is likely to encounter.
