Lore wise, how difficult is it to kill a High Dragon?

In Gameplay the Dragon fights are ridiculous but with regards to the lore how though are they soposed to be? Would you need a couple of hundred men, thousand men to kill them?

I know Dragons are soposed to be a big deal (Hell they named an Age after them) but if they are the push overs lore wise as they are ingame that seems pretty lame.

Any sources for this stuff?

Varies a lot in the lore. Some accounts like Urzura, Daughter of Urthemiel, talks of the raising of small army (albeit of militiamen) to corner the High Dragon in her lair and slay her. On the other hand the Pentaghast family, the rulers of Nevarra and family of Cassandra, are renowned as being Dragon Slayers and it only mentions the family and doesn't detail the raising of any armies to hunt the beasts. Hell, we even see Cassandra kill a Drake and a High Dragon in Dawn of the Seeker (if I recall correctly, been a while since I saw it).

I suppose its all a matter of circumstances, even within the Lore. DA:I seems to lending more credence to the tall tails by making the Dragon battle tougher and, if I saw it correctly in the trailers, made it so that dragon can actually flee battles making it harder to pin them down and kill them in one encounter.

Not sure about codex entries or the like, but most DAO companions are not very eager to fight the High Dragon in Haven, saying things like that they hope they can sneak past. Wade is completely baffled that you killed a High Dragon, so they're definitely supposed to be though.

Theoretically, if you can dodge it's fire breath and claws and then pierce its heart with your sword then its dead. The problem is that "lorewise" you have no healthbar.

The anime movie is canon, so it only takes a teen a single stab of a dagger to kill one.

I'm not sure if I remember correctly but is it her who kills the high dragon? in my memories she killed a couple of drakes (I supposed the one's in the pit at the beginning were drakes or just your usual dragon) but the high dragon that comes at the end is killed by the pride demon or then sent away by the little elven girl.

Long time since I last saw the movie

It should be nearly impossible for an individual to accomplish on their own.

This. One headbite, claw-sweep or firebreath would outright kill most people in one attack :P

Your group are the elite, have elite equipment, have elite training, are naturally eltie in their skills.  It's not far off lore if you ask me.

There is a single drake in the movie.

She kills 3 dragons that are much bigger than the mature dragons we face in DAO/DA2, so they would be high dragons by game standard.

Lore...well you could probably find volumes and volumes of different stories about dragons.  Obviously, with a game's design, I don't think you'll find one that offers hundreds or thousands of fighters to take one down.  You might manage in a movie and easily in a book.  I think the way DA approaches it, it's done fairly well.

Best dragon battles in game that I've experienced were in Final Fantasy 11.  Dragons were actually weak, the big ones were called Wyrms.  They took about 20+ people to take one down.  My group of friends didn't focus on the wyrms, so we tried once with about 20 people and we all died, lol.  You had to have a very good set up and strategy or you'd face quick defeat.  Good times...

The adventuring group in the Calling-novel slay a large dragon. There was no offspring in its immediate vicinity so it was not necessarily a High Dragon. It was however large enough for a fully grown man to run along its neck.

To the best of my recollection this was the composition of the group that took it down:

  • 3 veteran Grey Warden warriors in massive plate armor, 2 with greatswords 1 with mace and shield.
  • 1 swordsman in heavy armor
  • 1 veteran Avvar hunter + his mabari hound
  • 1 rogue dual-wielding daggers
  • 1 unarmed and unarmored Silent Sister
  • 1 mage, using both barriers and healing to protect the party

Despite the size and expertise of the group, they had considerable difficulty with the dragon.

There are 3 drakes, and 1 High Dragon in Dawn of the Seeker. She kills one of the Drakes, and the High Dragon kills itself fighting the Pride Demon.

You don't know your Dragon Age dragons lore. Hint: drakes don't have wings and can't fly.

Whatever, the name of the dragons is of no consequence. The facts remain, regardless.

The facts are that those dragons were all big enough to be called High Dragons by game and lore standards.

Extremely difficult. Most people would not have the right equipment, or the experience to fight one.

I think 4 very skilled specialists can replace a whole platoon. So I think it's not that illogical that the Inquisitor and his 3 companions can bring down a dragon on their own.

No health bar goes for the dragon too, it should be possible in theory for someone to just dodge bite/swipe and jam their sword through it's eyes and out the other side, which I'm pretty sure would kill it instantly

By which you mean you can incapacite (not kill, took a sword to the skull to do that) a drake (not a dragon) by finding and cutting a major artery just behind its head. You can do this if you are a highly trained fighter, from a long lineage of nobles trained from birth for exactly this enemy, and as long as you have another highly trained fighter distracting the beast. Oh, and the beast has been weakened severely to the point it could be restrained by a dozen or so mages, is in chains, and had been stabbed in the chest moments earlier.

You know, for someone who claims to be obsessed with the fluff you do seem to like wilfully misrepresenting it

An elite group containing the most powerful and most skilled individuals of all Thedas have difficulty bringing down an single high dragon. I would imagine it would take a large number of experienced soldiers taking heavy casualties to stop one.
