This time I am going for Alistair as a duel wielder, but perhaps he will not be as good a tank without his shield.

should work, though Alistair comes predisposed for shielding

I'd personally take shale as the #1 tank, though that could be an aesthetic choice overall

Gigantic stone person=best tankage

Ya, without his shield he wouldn't be as good of a tank. But it is not a concern if he can kill things around him quick enough

Situational. If you keep his dex high enough he may be a half-decent tank against most enemies, and if you leave him as a templar that's always a good point against mages, but he won't have the flanking and knockdown immunities of a shield user, which come in handy in those fights against rogues or big scary things.

IMO, if you don't have a dedicated tank, it's best to have at least 2 off-tanks.

Well, the three classic roleplaying roles are tank, healer, and dd (damage dealer, also called dps, damage per second)

Theres a potential fourth one, utility, but usually utility is just spread amongs tank, healer and dps classes, especially since many games dont have much utility to begin with.

These roles have been created by the players in MUD and more importantly MMORPGs, from the very beginning on.

In fact, the main problem of classless rulesystems is that there are usually just three classes - tank, healer, and dd - and thats basically all people play (*). Everyone who tries to be more individual is only taken into groups if nothing better is available.

I think it is a core balance problem of the DA rule system that healer is not a separate class to mage. This and the de facto infinite mana with mana potions results in heftily overpowered mages.

Ah, the holy trinity :)

That brings back memories.

Tank is someone who takes a lot of damage and doesn't die, its the main "fodder" in a way for the opponents to go after. Your team can then attack the group while the tank remains there taking damage but not dying. Tanks can also be good damage dealers if they are balanced.

So in fact, when I have "two shield tanks", I am doing it wrong?

Nah, you could play the whole game with all sword and shield warriors. Just vary up the specializations a little bit. Only thing that would suck is that someone is going to get stuck with the fourth best gear.

Yeah, I should have at least left one of my two warriors with their shield. This 2nd time around my main character is a one sword kind of guy and Alistair is a duel wielder. I should not have tried to change both my characters so drastically, but I will still have fun...and there is always Shale as a superior tank.

In Dragon Age, there a couple of ways of developing a tank. 1st is traditional tank, that will draw aggro and has lots of armor, health, magic resistance and shield defensive talents (Alistair or Shale). 2nd, is ranger pet which saves a lot of potions, mana, and can suck up a lot of nasty mage spells. Unlike a traditional tank, their demise does not break the line of defense for the party. 3rd. is the high dexterity dual wielder (most likely rouge) that has such a high defense that they rarely get hit 4th. is the cheesy, force field that can be used right after your main DPS (dual wield, archer, 2 hander or mage) develops a lot of aggro.

I'm going for the 3rd option in Alistair - the high dexterity dual wielder. First time around I was amazed by Leliana and her two daggers. She was so fast and precise. She wasn't even a dual wielder - that was Zevran, who was not used much. Also, she had the lightest armor. This time around I want Alistair to possess those skills only to actually gain dual wielding talents and be high in armor, dexterity, and strength. That is my goal anyway.
