I think is more that devs make it difficult. Work wise, is the same making a sway walk and a more normal one. Is just hard make a both  sexy and serious walk.

I think they are trying too hard and making it too hard for themselves for no reason. They don't need to make animate women in such exaggerated fashion. Most people would be happy with gender neutral animations. Not everyone but majority.

She was definitely animated for the male gaze :pinched:

"I would suggest that you toggle into walk mode and play a female Hawke, and do just that. Mmmmrrrrowwwl."

It's really creepy, honestly.

These animations should not made for the arousal of straight men.

I think they called the f!Hawke's walk a "perfect blend of sexy and strong" and it occurred to me that I've never seen a male walk animation described like that.

The male walk animations are strong and sexy as Fk.

I'm happy that Bioware caters to me by making my male characters manly men. :P

But yeah a choice of movement animation would be cool, but if they do it they need to be careful with proportion.

It's more work than simply picking between two animations. The current female run on men would be ridiculous, while it's "acceptable" for women. The curent male run on women would be "acceptable" but too stiff. Femshep always felt a little off.

Opposite-gender animations on the characters should be more restrained because of the inherent difference in hip size. Having the animations unchanged for gender would be jarring.

Reading the title made me think of SR2's customization which is nothing short but absolutely insane. I'll always love the game for it.

So true, when I heard that announcement I was like "Dafuq you morons ? It's not hard to animate, you can use the exact same ones <.<"

Besides, again priorities. Lots less flak in giving female assassins "manly"/neutral animations and get some complaints that they're not feminine (while also getting some praise for the same reason) than in not having them outright for such a dumb reason

Also, FemShep's run was perfect imo, that's pretty much how I run irl and I don't think anyone actually has sway while running (unless it's that girly jogging thing which isn't really running) regardless of how they walk

Does the lady dorf use the same animation? I wonder what it looks like with her proportions.

I don't think we have seen female dwarf Inquisitor in the action. At least I haven't. But I think for female qunari the animation seems less exaggerated maybe same for female dwarf hmm.

Most comments I saw were about: just animate some boobs for her. No need for new wardrobe and animations! Assassins are more agility based than strenght so they dont generally have very manly animations (for me at least) so the male animations would have worked just fine for female character too. The devs are just doing to too harsh for themselves.

Also, only the walk and run animations can really be made feminine (and the run would be dumb since assassins are professional runners), you can't climb, blow darts, throw knives, shoot hidden guns or crossbows, swordfight, etc in a girly way. Everything that comes from training will be learned movements that are the same for everyone, no assassin trainer would be like "you're doing it wrong lass, sway your hips when you grab a window border"

Just my two cents since aaaaaah I've had so many feelings about this. The first time I saw FemHawke's idles and run/walk animations, I genuinely lol'd  :P. I'm replaying DA2 at the moment and while my Hawke moves better now (the male-to-female animation mod is a heaven sent), having all the female NPCs strutting around the place, guards and templars and chantry sisters alike, still looks so silly. And judging from some DA:I vids, the runway-walk for everyone is back, yaay. >_> I lol'd again at Mother Giselle, too bad it's funny for all of five minutes and after that I just wish it wasn't so immersion-breaking.

Thank the Maker the over-the-top, childish idles seem to be gone but I was really disappointed to see that not only do they still think the female characters need to move ~*sexily*~, they added for all women what looks like Merrill's idle pose which is really dainty and not at all relaxed or neutral. Not much chance of playing a Brienne or Aveline type of character without major disconnect. I personally never had a problem with the shared male animations (in DA:O or ME) - they weren't ideal, but I was afraid what might happen if they tried making separate "feminine" animations... aaaannd I was right. Like, I'm 99,95% sure most people, even the ones who like the current ones, wouldn't have actually complained if they'd made more neutral-yet-still-feminine animations.

Honestly I only have only a few complaints with what I've seen of DA:I, but they mostly have to do with the female characters - the poses/animations and twiggy arms even on Qunaris (others include the hairstyles and the unchangeable Skyhold jammies, gimme my armor pls).

Also re:FemShep's arms, I can't express how much I love the buff FemShep mod .

Well after watching the prologue stream. The animations look so much better on femqunari. Still swaying but it doesn't look as bad on her frame.

DAMN THE QUNARI HAIR SUCKING SO HARD.

Oh I just meant photoshop in the "a picture editing program" sense, like when we say "obviously photoshopped" to mean "obviously edited"

So I saw this in the lady inquisitor thread. It's from Kotaku's 11 things you should know about Inquisition.

When your character smiles, it's the same bizarre horror-mask that Commander Shepard so often wore in Mass Effect. When characters cross their arms, their hands clip through their chests. My lady protagonist had male animations in cutscenes, so she'd swagger into each scene carrying invisible suitcases, legs splayed like she was riding an imaginary horse. It's all pretty awkward. The strong writing and voice acting make up for that stiffness, and after a while I stopped noticing. But given how incredible video game character-animation has gotten over the last several years, Inquisition's awkwardness sticks out.

^^ Sounds like you nailed it way back when.

Ugh.

I don't always agree with design decisions, but I can usually see some benefit or reason for most of them, and am generally willing to go with the flow. I'm not terribly picky about animations - I don't, for example, look for or expect perfect lip synching. But this? I just can't fathom why they would invest resources to slam-dunk those who play female PCs directly into Uncanny Valley - instead of just providing a single set of gender neutral animations.

gh...it felt so strange to see the almost hulking (fantastic!) female Qunari run like Candy Candy...is not so much the sway, but how she move her arms...

I actually loved the male moveset on the female Qunari, it looked so good in the cutscenes, tall and lumbering like I would expect from a giantess. And then she leaves the cutscene and suddenly starts frolicking around like a dainty elf...
