Some of you may remember Lords of the Fallen, an action-RPG inspired by Dark Souls and developed by former producer of The Witcher 2, Tomasz Gop. A dark fantasy RPG with a fantasy warhammer-esque artstyle, Lords of the Fallen looks quite solid and from watching all the recent videos, I think it's a firm competitor to the Dark Souls series with what looks like more impressive enemy AI in comparison and some unique enemy designs and bosses. Inspiration from The Witcher 2 seems to be with the choices and dialogue options that the game features.

Whilst featuring a set character, the game allows you to choose your starting class and gear at the beginning of the game. Here's some gameplay below:

Seems like a worthy buy for me as a Dark Souls fan. The company hasn't had the best track record but Tomasz Gop is new to them and seems to have done good with this game. Might be worth waiting for reviews but it looks good enough IMO and all the people given early copies on YouTube have enjoyed the game thus far.

It's like a poor man's Dark Souls. Still, I'm looking forward to it despite the boring generic protagonist, lack of character customization or any sort of builds. Most enemies seem to be armored dudes, which hopefully won't be the case because I've had my fair share of those in DS 2. Not to mention they do not seem to hit that hard. The consequences for screwing up are not punishing enough. Yeah, I'll definitely wait for reviews, atleast Totalbiscuit's or Yahtzee's since they're both big fans of DS so it's gonna be interesting what they will say about this.

I remember watching this and laughing hysterically. Like wtf is this boss doing? Is he blind or just retarded? Most of attacks just miss and he seems to be swinging in complete opposite direction than where the player is.

This game looks stunning visually and in terms of the art department. I guess it's a DS knock off but man does it look sweet.

The fact that the character is set is going to harm the game.

But otherwise it looks great.

I actually found out about this from VaatiVidya. I like some of the gameplay tweaks like a focus on a weapon's timing for each swing for a stamina benefit, or just wailing on them instead at the cost of more stamina. Bosses have a "special way" to be killed, like killing a dragon's tail in DS1. Interesting.

It's got my attention. Not sold yet, but it looks at least in the 7-8's. Could be better, I dunno yet though.

I have zero interest in playing grizzled bald dude. There's just a basic level of aesthetic sensibility a protagonist has to have before I can consider the game, unless the game is a masterpiece like TW1-2 (and likely 3).

That never killed the bosses in DS1. Chopping their tail off simply netted you a weapon. LOL

So, 'Lords of the Fallen' releases tomorrow. What are your expectations? Will you wait for reviews or have you pre-ordered already?

My expectations would be somewhere between 7.5 and 8.5 in shorthand quality. I think they've got some great ideas mechanically, but it's hard to tell if the levels themselves and the story will carry along the rest of the train.

I'll wait on reviews. At this point I've become too much of a cheapass to fork up $60 unless I know it's a must-have. I blame Steam/GoG.

The First Review Is Up...

It's Good! 8.5 out of 10

Lords of the Fallen is a surprisingly solid title that wasn’t even on my radar. While it borrows heavily from the Souls franchise, it’s done well and with its own signature flair. I highly recommend this game to anyone that enjoys that series, and if you haven’t gone down that road before, it might be a more forgiving entry point into the action RPG.

So we're back to trusting the gaming media? I'll never be able to get this stuff straight...  :wacko:

From what I can tell it seems like an un-customizable easy mode Souls game.

No thanks, the Souls games are easy enough.

I wouldn't base that from those demo videos above. The characters provided were either overleveled or those enemies are weak for the prologue. If you look at all the later videos showing enemies a few hours into the game, three hits can kill you.

Also if you think the Souls games are easy, you're either a veteran like many players and know all the tricks, mechanics and enemies etc or have a weird definition of "easy." The Souls games are by no means "hard" really but they're more challenging than other games.

Feedback for Lords of the Fallen seems to range from 7-8 scores from critics and players so I think it's probably worth checking out, for me at least.

The combat looks cool, but I'm not interested in the predefined character.

I don't have anything against iconic protagonists, but not this guy. And not when billed as an RPG.

I always take them with a grain of salt, was an excuse to make the joke :P

IGN Described it as good choice for people who were scared away from the difficulty of DS, the player can be quite overpowered.

I got the game today, gonna give it some playtime and'll lay out some thoughts later.

So I've gotten a good deal through the game. I'll keep the review down to bullet points and a bottom line.

Pros:
  • Timing-Based attacks. Tapping attack correctly at the moment you land a swing can make your stamina deplete a lot less and is very rewarding.
  • Minor use of stealth. Haven't done much myself, but it's a handy option that can allow the "Dark Souls" backstab.
  • Attack Animation feels more "weighty" as VaatiVidya put it. Feels more realistic to me and less game-y.
  • Serious Graphics. I enjoyed nice touched like the sparks flying from clashing steel to steel. I'd suspect much of the lighting couldn't be done on a PS3 the same way.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cons:
  • Story and Characters are poorly done - it's mostly an arcade-y game and doesn't focus on it, but does feel like a missed opportunity since it's more straightforward in storylining than DS. Lip movement and facial animation isn't mind-blowing.
  • A good amount of the Enemy/Boss design lack the memorability that Souls does. Some of them are unique, some aren't.
  • Significantly easier than DS1/2, though it's still a difficult game.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Bottom Line:
If you're curious about Souls games and want to ease yourself in, this isn't a bad start.
If you're looking for Dark Souls III, give it a few months.
If you're in the mood for DS-ish combat, don't care for storyline and want something a bit different in setting and more straightforward storyline, this may be for you.

In terms of shorthand entertainment value, it's somewhere between low 8's and high 7's. On a somewhat similar note, testing the PS4's share option and uploaded my time fighting the Bald Bull Boss, Champion.
