Just read through David Gaider's last blog entry.
It defends Anita Sarkeesian's fem frequency videos.

First off, I want to say that I think she has every right to say what she does, and I find the threats against her, the calls to shut her up, as well as the cyberstalking, completely unacceptable.
Yes, she should be able to voice the critique as she does, and the people who think real life threats are a way to deal with it should all go to hell!
However, it should also be possible to talk about the critisism. Examine it for what it is, discuss its validity and appropriateness, without any attacks on her personally.

And I find her critique, for the most part, invalid. Cherry-picking, confirmation bias, never looking at the whole picture and completely neglecting to put video games as a medium as well as the setting they play in the proper context. While she may have a few valid points, they are so much drowned in manipulative half-truths that I can't take her criticism seriously.

I don't consider her videos industry-ruining, but I do find it odd that such a one-sided way of looking at things receives so much respect from industry insiders.

However, I deeply respect David Gaider. I think he is an awesome writer and he has brought much joy to my gaming. Basicly, I wait with baited breath to see the story he and his team has written.
So when he says
"That is the purpose of critique. To make you think. That’s it.
Try it."
I sit down and think. And afterwards, I am more bewildered than before.

I realized that the moment I grew angry at the femfrequency videos was the moment I saw DAO on there. It was basicly a trope about trivializing rape or using it as a mere plot tool, showing a scene from the city elf origin.
And while I don't care much about Mario or Donkey Kong, I do care if somebody goes to slander MY favorite game. Yes, I think the DAO story is perfect. Given the medieval fantasy setting, I think it's pretty much on the progressive side and in no way sexist.

I played a female city elf back then and considered the scene perfectly all right: Yes, rape threats can be used in such a setting in the same manner as other exploitation/punishment/physical harm: to demonstrate power and take advantage of people with less power. I personally never understood why an evil rapist makes a game horrible, while an evil murderer is perfectly ok.
Not only that, but DAO also empowers the female character by having her lead the way to escape from the capture, with her male companion regulated to the role of side kick. The exact thing that Anita Sarkeesian complains never happens is happening in a game she is critisizing, even without bothering to look closer. Even the accusation of the trope -- that it sexualizes females without giving them personality -- is false, as Shianni displays a lot of personality. So I was angry about her unfair criticism of such a cool game.

And here, now, the lead writer of that game defends the person making that criticism. And tells me I am one of the bad guys.
"But, look, she's making unfair accusations against your masterpiece without really looking at it" -- "Look, you don’t want to be lumped in with the bad guys? Then don’t be a bad guy"

Aeh...what? Color me confused.

Posted thread twice?

Yes, accidentally, not on purpose.

Pressed "Post" twice, while the click was still processed.

Please lock one of the threads!

I think you make some rational, reasonable points that will fall on deaf ears.

She's aloud to spew whatever she wishes.

My problem is she's a hack that under-researches her topics, and steals other peoples content without giving credit.

One of those things are amateurish, the other is illegal.

Mission accomplished. Sarkeesian saves the world again.

To be honest, I have never really paid much attention to the whole GamerGate BS. Though i fundamentally disagree with Feminism and has heavily criticized Emma Watson for the HeForShe Campaign.

As long as it's actual criticism then we probably should consider it. It's true that Anita is cherry picking her evidence and is very biased, but then we're all guilty of doing that at some point. Yes, your views are biased as well. All of you except for the Google search engine bot reading this.

If we can get some civil discussion out of it then it can be useful even if you don't agree with it. Of course if I was going to attempt to get the internet to have a civil discussion I would go for something easier first, like world peace.

What I suspect David's statement was aimed at was the people who are dismissing her without considering her points because they simply don't like what she's saying. I get the sense that it's less about "don't disagree with her" and more "at least consider her point of view before disagreeing with it. Really consider it for more than 10 seconds".

In general my view is that if we seriously want to call video games art then it would be stupid to shy away from the darker parts of Humanity just because we don't like them. It should be done in a tasteful manner, but we shouldn't cry foul at the first sign of it being a thing in a game.

I see dry snitching is alive and well on the BioWare forum.

Anyway, I agree with most of your post. I wouldn't call Dragon Age: Origins a "masterpiece," but that's completely subjective and really has nothing to do with the topic at hand. You made a lot of good points without being completely dismissive of Anita Sarkeesian on the whole, but anything that doesn't fall in lockstep with her and those of her ilk's thoughts on this subject usually gets locked around here.

It wasn't meant to be political.

I discuss the criticism of one person towards DAO and what a BioWare developer writes about it.

I checked the forum rules and I saw no rule I violated against.

There isn't any rules against this specific thread, but you mentioned Anita which has a habit of making threads around here go down a road that gets them locked.

I'd like to hope for this thread to be different, but apparently Spiderman says otherwise right now.

About all that can be said about Anita both good and bad has been said.

I completely forgot she existed until this thread popped into existence to remind me.

Her, GamersGate, The Quinnspiracy, Breaking Bad Figures being taken out of Toys R Us, and Jontron saying retarded, have all be discussed at length. They aren't interesting topics anymore. The Well's run dry and you're all licking the slimy floor.

I need to try city Elf one of these days. Most of my playthroughs were with female characters, favorite being that dwarf noble so far. It would be interesting to look at, and as a critic there are fine lines in things. I do generally feel Bioware has a much better handle on these things than other devs or that critic, totally my bias, but there've been times I felt a bit uncomfortable in their games. But it's like is this uncomfortable because it's cheap, or is this uncomfortable because I'm empathizing with a character & feeling their fear? Definitely have to look into that with the City Elf. Plus good excuse to play Origins again.
