Cassandra is basically a paladin and that's very much a KISA trope. The templars are more religious and the doctrine itself is less heroic than one is typically used to reading about in most pulp fantasy which is why maybe people hesitate to see them ad embodying the trope.

But actual IRL knights - even with a code of chivalry - aren't exactly doing purely things D&D equates with lawful good.

"Knight in Shiny Armour" first appeared in Chivalry Romances, so of course the concept has nothing to do with actual Knights. It was all about the valor of Knight Errant, Damsel in Distress and Courtly Love .

Yep, Manu plays Crixus.

As for the whole templar thing, I think the templars really do fall into that archetype within the universe, I don't think that there's a way to really separate KISA characters from templars, given that they're dominant warriors of the Dragon Age universe. These are the types of people who much of Thedas envision as being that knight in shining armor. Plus I think it's actually a good message within that framework for the templar to be gay - not only are they a KISA, they're also the religious warrior. It's an explicit statement of 'this dominant religion is not opposed to homosexuality,' which I think is really a bit of a big deal, given the way that some people try to pervert religion into an excuse to hate homosexuality.

I think the Chantry already is shown to not be against homosexuality. After all Divine Justinia V was a lesbian, or at least bisexual. We know she was in relationships with women but I don't recall her being mentioned as being into men as well.

I agree about the gay religious warrior thing, yes please, but I suppose that's really my question, that a KISA seems to traditionally come from a religious order or order of some kind, and the examples here are Templars, LoTD,  Seekers (Cass), Wardens (Alistair/Blackwall) etc.

Can you be a KISA without an order, or is that inherently tied to the trope to y'all? Or it's not, but that's what you'd prefer?

Still here!  *Waves back enthusiastically*

I wish I could have this thread moved to the more high traffic areas of the DA:I forum, but I don't think it would be appropriate in any other section at this point?

I don't think any one organization in Thedas screams KISA more than any other, but I still would like a Nevarran dragon hunter. That would be awesome. But, to me, character traits and personality combined with a warrior status is more important than what organization they belong to. I'm not picky.

Seeing that this thread has more than 100 pages, I say it has a pretty high traffic, considering that only a few minority of people on forum would be interested in such topic.  :)

Not to me, but I think the trope rigidity some people want is ridiculous and borderline cliched.

The arguments seem to shift between either having the character gay the right way or knight the right way.

Ha, yeah the thread blew up the other day. It started with a re-hash of 'Dorian:  Is he or is he not a KISA?" to a chaotic mix of on topic KISA talk and an off topic Game of Thrones gif fest.

The GoT gifs made for a nice tension break.  We did keep it mostly on topic, since they were mainly examples of personality and/or physical types that folks have been requesting.   ;)

I've been playing DA:I again, without going to Patch 5 just so I don't have to do a song and dance to get my mods running again.  Yeah yeah, first world problem.  I'm not complaining about it, only being lazy.   I've been having a lot of fun playing my human lady tank, that's a Champion spec.  Oh and she is riding the Bull again.   :P

This will sound odd (shocking coming from me, I know,) but playing a sword and board warrior helps give me ideas of what I'd like to see in a LGBT KISA companion.  It isn't that I would want any party member to be like the character I'm playing, but RP'ing that mentality gives me some ideas for later.  She's a raging smartass, which helps her be more of a KISA-type without getting boring.

I'm looking at you, Jedi Knight from SWTOR.  Lightside is booooring and my JK had the personality of a wet paper towel.

I've played D&D with a friend of mine that plays a paladin with a wickedly dry sense of humor and a lot of patience.  Since he's the only Lawful Good member in a Chaotic Good party, he has to have patience and humor to keep up with the rest of us.

Edit: My tiefling cleric, despite being CG, gets along with the paladin very well.  Since she's the group's med kit, buff bot, nuker and diplomat, she finds herself agreeing with the paladin more often than not.

I think that's a very good question to ask. As to me personally, yes, I would argue that you can be a KISA without being attached to an order. It's just that the majority of KISA material thus far has been attached to some powerful order.

I guess, however, we really need to define what we mean by a "Knight in Shining Armor", more or less.

Just some archetypes/character ideas that I'd like to throw out that could potentially fit the bill, but are not necessarily attached to an order:

--Village blacksmith

--soldier in an army

--bodyguard

While it is hard since part of the trope is about following a code, there can be a person who is not part of an order who can be a KISA.

<sigh> I do miss Kitiara*, my Darkside V Sith Juggernaut.  She will always be the angriest lesbian in the galaxy, and forever alone.  She was very fun to play.  I also loved my Imperial Agent as well.  Going LS with her was actually a lot of fun.

*For those that recognize the name, she was indeed a shout-out to the Dragonlance character.

I understand where you are coming from. I had a DA2 playthrough with a KISA Hawke. Sword and shield who romanced Fenris. Almost all good guy 'diplomatic' dialogue choices were picked.

However, in DA:I, I find that I can't get into warrior characters myself.  I love playing as a DW rogue too much.  And while I really like the KISA archetype, I actually like playing as the reluctant hero/ anti-hero/ bad-boy rogue.

Even my current big burly qunari guy is a DW rogue.  I'm loving the contrast between his huge size and his quick, agile fighting style.

I really like the dynamic of a bad-boy rogue with a chivalrous KISA warrior boyfriend and would love to be able to experience that in the next game with a KISA companion LI.

Either way, there'll always be a gay KISA in the game as long as you play your character that way.

I would say being part of a order is necessary, because otherwise you aren't a "true" knight. Like who would have knighted you, right? But you can be an honorable warrior without an order. I actually love Korbin, the dwarf warrior from the multiplayer. He's so KISA it hurts, especially when contrasted with the Katari or Tamar the Reaver (oh and he's LoTD for you daveliam). And there's Belinda the Templar. My personal headcanon is that Belinda and Argent (the Assassin) are together and Hall (the Archer) and Korbin awkwardly flirt when alone together.

In DA2 I really enjoyed going 2-handed warrior, which is way outside of my norm.  However, when I tried again in DA:I, the combat just felt slower than molasses again.   So it wasn't a tough call to be a tank instead.   My main two reasons for playing a lady warrior were:

1: Trying out something different.  Plus, I wanted to play a human lady warrior for the whole connection to Andraste, or at least the way the southern lands see her.

2: I got sick of leaving Iron Bull at home.  With myself as a tank, I know how to quickly grab aggro off of Bull (or anyone else) as needed.  I also took extra time and care with his armor to where he stands toe-to-toe with me without taking craptons of damage.

I'll probably end up either rolling a elven mage next, or reloading an older save from my human mage Terra.  I accidentally killed off the rest of the Wardens via War Table missions (oops,) so I'll have to backtrack on that character to just after "Here Lies the Abyss.''  This won't happen with my current character, since I have the missions written down with who to send for the best results.

Knight in Black Armor.

Good point.  That's the perfect way to describe my Sith Warrior for sure.  She was Lawful Evil down to her toes.

To some extent, I would agree. However, I'm having difficulty, in my own mind, divorcing the desire for an actual "knight" s/s romance versus having a noble, honorable warrior. And to some extent, they are pretty much one and the same, in my mind.
