That's mostly me.  I'm sorry.  I have a thing for crystal blue eyes.  It's because I have beady dark little eyes (like Jon Snow), so I find them just gorgeous to look at.  Like unicorns.  Sexy eyed unicorns.  Wait.......what?

Oh I see that it's on now... and after I posted a manly ginger beardy barbarian man for you.

I cannot believe that you don't find him attractive, ya weirdo.  I mean, dark brown curly hair, beard... beard...you're crazy.  Crazy I tell you.

Anyway, back to Chevaliers...I can't imagine they're all dicks because the original Aveline was one.

He doesn't do it for me because I am ALSO a dark haired, pale, bearded guy with small beady dark eyes. I mean, I think I'm alright and all, but it would be a little weird if I was into guys who look like they could be my relative. Which is why I torture Huldra with pics of Richard Madden and his luscious auburn locks, freckles, and haunting icy eyes.........hmmmm, wait, what?

And, to bring it back on topic, yeah, I must have missed the lore where chevaliers are all dicks. I'm still not understanding why one couldn't be a KISA. Aveline for the bill for me. Was she a chevalier? Or did you mean original Aveline?

Chevaliers are pretty nasty. In The Masked Empire, a prospective chevalier must go engage in a "raiding party" in the city slums in order to attain the rank itself - and the preferred prey are the hapless city elves living there. Institutionalized legally-approved Orlesian massacre, really. Fine thing for chevaliers to be brave when they've made it illegal for city elves to even carry a weapon!

That being said, differences exist in individuals within every large group. I'm sure a Chevalier companion would be less objectionable somehow.

But Chevaliers on the whole shouldn't be trusted by anyone in Thedas who unfortunately find themselves in their power.

Oh so you're hot.  Anyway...

The original for whom ours was named, but Aveline is a KISA even if she's not a Chevalier.  I liked the story of Aveline and tourneys.

She was, but the modern Chevalier order leaves a lot to be desired. The elf thing is unforgivable, as is getting away with rape and murder just because you're, er, a member of a highly honourable and respected order... The pre-Kirkwall sh*tstorm Templars had several bad eggs, but it wasn't institutionally sanctioned - unless we count Right of Annulment, of course, although that order comes from the Clerics or possibly the Divine herself?

This is helpful to know.  The only book that I read was The Calling, so I never got that background info on Chevaliers.

But, as you said, there are always differences in individuals, so maybe a Chevalier who is striving to regain the honor of the Order's past might work?  One who is looking to reform the order back to a more chivalrous age?  One who didn't engage in that 'raiding party' (or somehow found a way to subvert it)?

Well, so did the noble families of Denerim.  My city elf rogue in Origins was kicking ass on that family.

Bisexual avvar scout (dual wield rogue?) who looks like this to be the other m/m romance?  The perfect counter-point to our gay KISA.  ;)

Yeah..... it would have been nice to see some more hoyay moments between him and the priest.

And a big yes to the bolded from me.

Okay, dave, do something for me.  Go out and get Asunder and The Masked Empire.  I'm not one for reading the Extended Universe of most games, but both of those stories are damned good.  It also makes sense out of most of Cole's odd comments.  At least the ones that aren't shout-outs to things like The Sixth Sense.

Michel as of Inquisition would be a good example of someone that is a Chevailer that would not like the current system.  In fact, it's his stanch sense of honor that got him on the outs with Celene.

Also, TME has Felassan, who makes it worth it by virtue of being awesome. lol.

It's my favorite of the books, just before Asunder.

Yeah, I'm not going to lie, DA: I is difficult to follow some nuances if you haven't read the books.  I had no idea until my third playthrough that the Dalish mage lady in Solas' personal quest was a book character.

I'll totally get around to reading the books.  I'm still working my way through the "Dwarves" series and I've been on that for, like, 3 years now.  I have time for either recreational reading OR video games.  I've been picking the latter.

I did perk up when I met Michel, though.  Anything ever solid about his sexuality?

Nothing about Michel's sexuality is ever brought up in the books, as far as I can recall.  I'll need to re-read it, but he's more focused on the civil war and about the elf uprising than anything else.

That book does get into why the elf in the Hinterlands is not a very good person; how the city elves in Orlais got organized; Briala and Celene's relationship and the political fallout; and Imshael.  Did you know he's one of the Forbidden Ones, and extremely powerful?  I wouldn't have, based on his in-game appearance. What he did to the templars was nothing compared to what he did to a Dalish clan.  He's wonderfully devious.  Unfortunately, my Inquisitor will never know.  My reaction to any demon in-game, even on my darker characters, is to beat them like Boo did to Randal in Monster's Inc.

Getting this back on topic, I think the Chevalier idea is a good one.  The writers seem to love doing the "rebelling against the system" characters, and I think a Chevalier trying to reclaim the honor of his order would be an excellent idea.  I know that the honor of the Chevaliers can be a big case of Your Mileage My Vary, but I think that they are much like the Templars: An order that started off with a noble purpose and intentions that got eroded by corruption over time.

One quality they could share with Dorian is the love of their Order while desperately wanting to change it from within.  Dorian feels that way about Tevinter, and I could see a KISA character expressing the same views.

I still find it odd that they basically relied on people reading the books. I read both TME and Asunder and for the life of me, I have no idea how people who didn't read them let alone new fans whose first DA game was DAI to even care what was going on in Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts.  The whole time, I was thinking to myself- thank gawd I read the books, or I would be lost right now. I would have no idea who this Briala girl was or why I should care who ends up ruler of Orlais.

I could have sworn there was a passing blink-and-you-miss-it referrence to Michel's heterosexuality.  I admit, I had my fingers crossed that they would at least leave him a blank slate in that department.  He was amazing in the book.  Too damn bad he was so flat and forgettable in the game.

Also, I pictured him being in his late 30s to early 40s based on his combat experience etc. To me he just seemed way too young in DA:I.

I couldn't agree with you more.  One of my pet peeves about bringing in EU characters is how much is lost between the two mediums.  Even going back to Origins, I would have never known that Loghain was an honorable war hero.  I would have never known that he had some good, if not extreme reasons for what he did in the game.  In the game, he's pretty 2-dimensional, unless the player makes him a Warden.   That was fairly minor to me, since he's the secondary villain, and an optional party member.

When I was playing Inquisition for the first time, I can't tell you how many times I said, "I'm so glad I read Asunder and TME first."  Otherwise, sadly, some chunks of the story make no sense to the player.  What's worse is that many times that it seems like the writers expect that the player to have read the source material.  Cole's story about being locked in the cupboard sounds like nonsense (or worse, a Harry Potter shout-out) unless you read Asunder.   The final sparks of the mage/templar war as well as Wynne's death are in there as well.  Shoot, I keep wondering where one of the major anti-heroes of Asunder, Adrian, was. The entire story of the civil war in Orlais is in TME.  It also gave hints about Briala being given an orb at the end of the book, with zero mention of that in the game.

Ugh, sorry for the rant there.  Quick, someone post a hottie from Spartacus or Vikings to lighten the mood!

Yeah, I thought so too, but I'm not 100% sure.  I think he finds Briala attractive, or something like that.

As to your second point, to be fair, a lot of the NPCs and companions in this game look younger than their years.  Leliana is 39 at the youngest, and Varric's age is confirmed at 40 as well.  Alistair is also 40, and Cullen's gotta be getting close to it.  Cassandra is at least 38-40 years old as well.  Shoot, I think Loghain is pushing his late 50s and still looks really good considering.  I think the Frostbite engine is part of the reason why.

I feel you, and in some ways reading Asunder made the mage/templar "war" in the Hinterlands a huuuuuuuuge let down.  Same with the non-existent Civil War in DA:I and Briala's Eluvian network completely being dropped.  Ugh.  There was so much in the novels, and they were suuuuuuuch good reads IMO that it just made those parts of the game such a big let down.

I like DA:I, but the books just built up such high expectations for me, and to see all the potential- all those awesome plot points- just glossed over in such a superficial way (mage/templar war?  Oh, uh, just kill some generic mage mooks in this cave and these generic templar mooks in this camp and POOOF teh war is ovar!!!!

I'm ranting now too because I'm still a bit saddened by this. I've said my peace in other threads already too. But  Again, I really like DA:I, but I just think of what it could have been and just feel saddened.
