The reputation system in New Vegas is a buggy, unnecessary mess that I plan to scrap as much as possible with mods if I decide to play it again. How is it 'brilliant' by any stretch of the imagination?

Agreed 100% Arcade is awesome. All kinds of awesome.
He's an intellectual. Which not to derail the thread but I'd really like to see in an MM LI.
I was pretty meh on Solas's appearance (not a big fan of bald) but his personality absolutely won me over to the extent that I am more disappointed by his not being available than, say, Cullen.

Have you heard that bit of recovered audio from Solas' unused M/M dialogue? It was pretty hot, not gonna lie.

I like the idea of rivalry in DA2, but I did not really like how it was implemented there. If they are going to do rivalry in the next game, I hope it would be more nuanced and reasonable. I would like to see a KISA character to have integrity when it comes to their morality. I do not wish to see a rivalry where if I treat the KISA shitty enough, they will miraculously change who they are or what they do strongly believe.
Actually I want to see more than one scale when it comes to relationship with characters. Maybe in addition to rivalry/friendship, another scale regarding, say, respect might be added.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want the KISA to change who they are. What I would like is to still have interesting and meaningful content with the companions even if they don't like the PC very much. To me this was lacking in DA:I. With Iron Bull or Solas, you get nothing until you reach a certain approval threshold, and with the type of Inquisitor I like to play, that means that I constantly get this:
Inquisitor: Hey Solas-
Solas: YES....
Inquisitor: ...... (No new dialogue options, no personal quest, no nothing) ...... We'll talk later.
Solas: OF COURSE.
Me: Yeah, well you can squat here all you want while Leliana's birds squirt poopy goo all over your desk and head because I'm never going to exile the Wardens so whatev. ![]()
Lol. I'm not bitter or annoyed or anything. I just like that in DA2, I still got content even if the companions didn't like me. But I definitely don't want the KISA to change who they are just to stick around.

Now I have. Yeah, it's a shame he's not it. But then I'm the IB is such a lolnope for me that, really, any non-IB M/M LI option would be appreciated.

While I'm not into Solas, I find it kinda annoying that they withhold information and make it only available for romance. They said that romance wouldn't affect the storyline or reveal important information, but Solas is not only revealed that the the tattoo is a slave brand but also remove the tattoo from the elves which unremovable otherwise. Seriously, why can't they have this scene with friendship? It's not just a random scene but an important scene.

I wish I could like this more than once. While removing the tattoo is a really romantic touch (that they could keep for the romance,) the meaning of the tattoo being hidden from an elven friend doesn't sit well with me. That's lore changing, at least in-universe. Between that and the Well, it throws the entire religion of the Creators into a new light. It never made sense to me that he wouldn't share this with a close friend.
That's one of the cases I was thinking of when I was talking about how iffy the integration of the friendship and romance arcs can be in the DA series. Thanks for bringing that up, because it's probably one of the strongest examples in the DA games to date.

^Yeah. That is rather... unfortunate.
I'm wondering if Solas was the character they were talking about when they said that there was a companion who was going to be bisexual but it "didn't fit the character" or whatever. The consensus seems to be that it was Cullen, but I wonder if it was Solas. Guess they can't picture Fen'Harel as a bisexual?
Still makes no sense to me about "not fitting the character," because that implies that certain characteristics and/or traits are incompatible with being gay or bisexual, and that sort of flies in the face of what this thread is about.

Well, a tweet by a Bioware dev back in December claims that Cullen's bisexuality was changed because the animator ran out of time to finish the male romance. Since then however, the tweet got deleted, but we have screenshot proof.
So yes, if the "not fitting the character" is truly a thing, then it must have applied to Solas. Cause, I honestly don't see any difference between what a male or female romance would bring. I can understand the elf only bit, cause it makes sense given his character. But not making him bi? Not so much.

I know the tweet was legit, it's when they delete it. Things like that always get deleted if they wasn't suppose to give out that information or it was false information

I remember right before Solas was revealed as a LI. I was frequenting his thread more often back then, contemplating the pros and cons of him being a possible M/M option. At first I didn't want him to be, (as you are well aware) but as time went on, the idea didn't seem so bad. Then came the day that he was announced, and I won't forget how it went down.
It was along the lines of: "Solas will be available for romance. Elf only."
And so I sat there, rapidly twiddling my thumbs as the rest of the Solas thread (99% female at that point) started going crazy and celebrating. Apparently "Elf only" was supposed to be a satisfactory reveal. But I knew better than to get my hopes up.
I wasn't buying it.
Not after the Cullen/Cassandra reveal and how they were stated as romanceable but no indication of their sexualities was made at the time. Just as with those two, the implied heterosexuality of Solas was thick in the air, and I headdesked a few times until some blessed individuals on twitter asked the dev to clarify what gender of elf could romance him. Only then was it revealed that it was for female elves. And that there were "super story reasons" that he was gated so severely.
Of course after that everyone assumed he would want elven babies. What other "super story" reason could there be for him to only be romanceable for female elves. Now looking back, there is no super story reason for him to be exclusive to female elves. Elves, yes. Because of the Vallaslin. But no reason he is for females only.
It would have been pretty neat to experience the Vallaslin scene with a male elf. It would have actually made me do a playthrough as a male elf.

Yup, I remember those...darker times. Yeah, there were no super story reasons. That was an absolute crock of ****. The only difference a male romance would have had is a change in pronouns, nothing more.

Let me preface this by saying I agree entirely with your second paragraph, and hope we see DA4 improve on this point greatly.
I think PWs tweets shed a lot of light on this. In the scene where Solas touches on the tattoos, his initial plan (which he chickened out of) was to come clean. Entirely. He doesn't, and in his fumbling desperation to gather himself he reveals part of the truth that he feels so very strongly that elves should not be bound by, i.e., the true meaning behind the markings.
I don't think the scene works without the romance, because it's (IMO) what drives Solas to almost reveal what he truly is as a figure in Thedas.

And animations. And while, again, I'd be happy for any non-IB alternative, I do (sort of) understand that Bioware has to dedicate limited resources somewhere. I just wish it was going to cater to my particular interest rather than someone else's

Let's hope that those dark times won't be repeated. I really hope they do a better job with the romance reveals for the next game- if they even choose to reveal them beforehand next time. It was pretty awful the way they were revealed for DA:I.
