On a more serious note, I think that so long as we have a species that is (1) sapient, i.e., self-aware and intelligent and (2) biologically capable of feeling pleasure by stimulating their reproductive organs, then you'll have a race that has sex for non-reproductive purposes because it feels awesome. 

The Qunari used to be a race that only had sex for procreation. It was one of the only things I liked about and respected them for. But then they were retconned expanded upon so that instead they just go to the neighborhood sex slave whenever they have an urge.

It was absolutely never implied to suggested in DAO that they didnt enjoy sex or desire it.

To get this somewhat back on topic re: the qunari based on what Sten said regarding their society and gender roles I always assumed they were more or less a race of all gay knights in shining armour (with their blue and orange morality mind you).

Meh....I'm not really seeing it. They adhere relentlessly to a code, but I don't think they fit the bill.

In Exile was calling it an utopia. I think it is the opposite. The opposite of utopia is dystopia.

the opposite of a utopia would be a a state where everyone is equally miserable instead of equally happy, dystopias don't tend to fit that as the ruling class is usually pretty well off

It doesn't matter the size or how many hands you use to weild your weapon. All that matters is how many strokes it takes to finish the job.

The problem with a KISA, as I see it (and notice I am not specifying sexuality here), is what defines their morality. Certainly my internal image of a KISA is someone with a strong moral code, but if our own morality is going to be subjective, what does that code have to be? And does that morality have to be aligned with my own, or indeed any player's? For example, I personally regard killing people as immoral, but I would not place non-aggression as a requirement for a KISA (which would make them a bit pointless). However, I personally would require a KISA to be sexually moral, since that is so integral to my view of them which then rules out things like participating in orgies.

 

In other words, surely in today's morally ambiguous world, whether or not a character is a KISA is as subjective as their morality. In that light, isn't this thread pointless?

You bring up a fair point. It is entirely subjective. And yet, most of the people in the thread are still desiring the pursuit of that ideal in an LGBT character, which we haven't had yet in Dragon Age. So no, the thread is not pointless.

I think it is impossible to come up with a character that aligns perfectly with everyone's morality. I'd say we would have to compromise on where "lawful goodness" of a KISA will land on.

 

In addition to morality, personalities are also important parts of KISA trope. If done properly, personalities can help uphold the KISA image.

That's why there's so much debate. I, for example, think Cassandra is in no way a KISA in the typical sense because of her moral compass (which is quite surprisingly ends justifies the means, something I see as a KISA disqualifier).

The example here would be say allowing Celene to die because of a view that Gaspard is a betrer leader.

A different example with Cassandra is her implied - approval is the wrong word, so let's say tolerance or sympathies - for the Mayor of Crestwood.

She's very results oriented in general and I also think that's a bit antithetical to a KISA, who I think would put principle ahead of practice.
