Yeah, I'm all for more diversity.  But this is definitely an area where Bioware shouldn't be criticized.  Let's look a the LGBT human LI's in their games:

Sky - PoC

Silk Fox - PoC

Kelly - white

Anders - white

Isabela - PoC

Kaidan - PoC

Steve - PoC

Samantha - PoC

Dorian - PoC

Josephine - PoC

80% of the human LGBT love interests have been PoC's.  I'm certainly not complaining, but I do think that Bioware certainly can't be criticized for overrepresenting white people in this content.

Wait...Kaidan is POC? But...all his name...are Russki...(I should probably read more lore books...)

I guess what I'm hoping for are characters who are more visually POC. Which sounds dumbly racist, but there are characters like Kaidan and Dorian where you could easily assume they just tan really nicely (could also blame the game engines for that). I loved Steve Cortez, but found him absolutely boring and I know there are plenty female LGBT LIs, but the men are much more limited (then again, there seems to be less men to women. or maybe it's just me and my selfish brain?). I read this interesting article somewhere about how some POC are considered more acceptable than others in media, such as Latin American and Mediterranean, simply because they look more white. And as much as I want to object to that idea, well...yeah...I wouldn't classify myself as Asian since I grew up in Russia, but like, that's a huge group of POC that rarely gets touched by media in a romantic domain.

Well, to be fair Kaidan's likely mixed race.  His surname is eastern European.  He's Canadian by birth.  His mother was exposed to Eezo in Singapore, which has led some to speculate that she was from there.  And his face model is latino (and openly gay too).  So there's not a real confirmation of his race in game.  He could be a white Canadian of eastern European descent.  He could be a PoC with ethnicity from eastern Europe, S. America, and Singapore.

Yeah, if anything, it's the straight characters that need more racial diversity.

You missed off Leliana, btw. Though she doesn't throw off the majority by much.

I know this is modern but I saw a manga cover where there were these two really buff construction site dudes with power drills that looked suggestive. I'm sure they could do something in Dragon Age with castle builders, maybe a dwarf construction guy.. But I admit that would be hard to pull off as a companion.

Actually, I think it's certainly possible for a character like that to be a companion. Like a war starts or a disaster happens and the dwarf/construction guy is all like "TOWNS TO ****, YOURE SAVING EVERYONE, SO I'M HELPING YOU!"

In fact, I don't even think it needs a natural disaster, the whole "nobody is doing anything to fix <main conflict of the game goes here>, but you are. So I'm going to help you and change the world for the better <something something something> I always wanted to be a hero <something something>" is a pretty solid reason/trope. I believe Oghren had similar reasons.

Combined with the fact that a really buff dwarf/construction guy can probably swing more than just a hammer (or who swings a giant hammer as a weapon?), he's most likely a good combatant as well.

Does Leliana count as a PoC, though? She's the equivalent of a French European. I'm legitimately curious if she should count.

I wouldn't think that Leliana would count as a PoC.  She's white.  I think Potato Cat was pointing out that there's been three white LGBT LI's, not two like I said.  So it's 27%, not 20%.

Yeah, I was saying she's another white LGBT character. I'm not really sure how Leliana could possibly count as a PoC for anyone. She's super white.

I kind of assumed the parody threads were a result of the power hungry mage LI thread rather than this one. Unless that one's also a parody and my sarcasm meter is broken again. Also possible.

As long as I don't have to participate in them, I'm okay with it, I guess. I imagine that they could invite some mean-spirited comments, though- hence why I stay away. Besides, I just keep to this thread.

Speaking of which, it is a shame that Barris could be killed off, as I would've liked to see him in the next game- especially if he's an advisor/companion... He could pull a Leliana, but I doubt that, so I'm not gonna get my hopes up. Appearance-wise, I knew I wouldn't be the only one thinking he's eye candy.

Word. Although I think it would be easier/make more sense if Barris came back. I mean, his death wasn't exactly a choice more...an accident...I mean it certainly is more believable and less head scratchy than Leliana's resurrection.
But yes, Barris is sexy.

Trolls feed on attention. Acknowledging the troll threads gives them what they want. It's not like we can do anything about them, so ignoring them is the best we can do.

I prefer it when jokes are actually funny, so I'm not okay with them on those grounds. But I figure they're this forum's equivalent of tumbleweeds, so whatever.

Yeah, I stopped clicking on the parody threads because..... yawn.  They're not really interesting enough for me to devote time to them.

Ser Barris is certainly pretty, but he doesn't really do it for me.  He's a little to emaciated in the face.  Like he's permanently sucking in his cheeks and doing a Blue Steel face.  His eyes and lips are certainly attractive though.

Bingo.

I posted two parody threads, just want you guys to know it's nothing against you (speaking personally, can't speak for the hermaphrodite werewolf poster) and just a bit of light-hearted fun. I apologize if I've indirectly offended anybody here. That.. and I was actually half serious about the bi-curious nun ;)

Keep up the good work :)

Well, one could look at the power hungry mage LI thread (my thread) as a parody, but that was not my intention. I actually got inspired by this thread.I thought to myself 'why should it only be the KISA that gets discussed? There are tons of other archetypes that could get more representation, especially in the LI/romance department' and decided to post it.

The thing is, going by the whole "tongue-in-cheekness" of the other threads, while it may originally be done in lighthearted jest, I just have a sinking suspicion that it'll just attract some pretty off-colour responses.

It's like there's this window of a opportunity to make fun of certain posters (who genuinely hope to see certain facets of their identity expressed in characters that are rarely expressed until nowadays) in an exaggerated way that you of course can't help but think it ridiculous.

It's just best not to get involved and stick to talking about, I don't know, nicer things, with the regulars here.

To me, joke threads are like slippery slope arguments: they're so exaggerated they're silly and hold no ground.

Anyway: I promised I would attempt to draw the KISA idea of the male Nevarran Dragon Hunter and the blonde female KISA. I finally managed to finish the male KISA! Delay caused by college and annoying ass heatwave.

JIUgZ09.png

Will be making a female version as well \o/  but my heavy-armor inspiration is currently somewhat exhausted so that might have to wait a little. I do know a good pose/face, although I'm thinking of switching her from a blonde white lady to a curly black/brown haired black lady.

Awesome detailing on the armour (perhaps it's just me, but armour's difficult to draw, so very nice), and I like that he's got a sort-of-but-not-quite the "come hither" look to his face.
