I know this is modern but I saw a manga cover where there were these two really buff construction site dudes with power drills that looked suggestive. I'm sure they could do something in Dragon Age with castle builders, maybe a dwarf construction guy.. But I admit that would be hard to pull off as a companion.
Actually, I think it's certainly possible for a character like that to be a companion. Like a war starts or a disaster happens and the dwarf/construction guy is all like "TOWNS TO ****, YOURE SAVING EVERYONE, SO I'M HELPING YOU!"
In fact, I don't even think it needs a natural disaster, the whole "nobody is doing anything to fix <main conflict of the game goes here>, but you are. So I'm going to help you and change the world for the better <something something something> I always wanted to be a hero <something something>" is a pretty solid reason/trope. I believe Oghren had similar reasons.
Combined with the fact that a really buff dwarf/construction guy can probably swing more than just a hammer (or who swings a giant hammer as a weapon?), he's most likely a good combatant as well.
