Hey, I already suggested a surface dwarf option. I mean since having a dwarven companion would result in them getting deemed a surfacer anyway, why not get a better look at their society? Varric was the kind of guy who looked at things dwarven and said 'not for me.' I'd see a surface dwarf companion in future games being someone who embraces dwarven culture, though he argues about the treatment of surface dwarves.

That said, a Kal Sharok dwarf would be interesting. We know almost nothing of them right now, and they could easily be an entirely different society than Orzrammar, due to their years of isolation from each other.

I did kind of leave out the surface option I know, sorry. I guess having had Varric as a companion and with Harding as a potential future companion (I agree with Dave that she's a natural option to show up in a future game as an ungated, bi option) I figured it might be time to explore dwarven culture in either of their main cities again. Personal preference I admit and your surface dwarf could work just as well too.  :)

When it comes to dwarves I would like to see what effect the choice of Bhelan or Harrowmont had on Orzammer though a quest there could answer that easily enough which is why I'm personally leaning toward Kal Sharok simply because we don't really know anything about how it works compared to Orzammer, surface dwarves and surface races. We know they have an embassy in Tevinter but not a lot about the culture, does it still have castes and so on? Exploring that with a dwarven KISA would certainly be interesting. Also I love the points Sandal made about a Kal Sharok KISA.

It would be really interesting if we had a Kal Sharok KISA companion and a quest in Orzammer where he comes along, that would be a real chance to learn about relations between the two cities and if he does have resentment/bitterness toward Orzammer it would be a real chance to explore how he deals with that and being a KISA.

If they're going to sdd a dwarven companion, it'd be great for them to be bisexual so that women will be able to enjoy them as well since I doubt there'll be more than one dwarven LI for each gender.

That's actually not a bad point.  There are so many people who are waiting for a dwarven LI that I almost hope that they add Scout Harding and a bisexual (ungated) male dwarf as well, just so that everyone can enjoy them.  I understand that it comes dangerously close to fanservice "box ticking", but......it's dwarves and they are sodding awesome so everyone should get a go!  I know that, if they include Harding as a bisexual romance option in DA4, she will 100% without a doubt be my female dwarf PC's LI.  Without a doubt.

Yeah very good point, dwarf fans have been waiting so long for a dwarven romance I hope whatever dwarven companion(s) we see in the next game are ungated LI's so there's finally some love for dwarves. I'd also be perfectly happy to have more than one dwarf companion in a game too.

I really want Kal Sharok to be a major factor - it really is time for dwarves to get their time in the sun. Er, so to speak. Like, their last major focus in game was Paragon of Her Kind. Humans, elves, and even the qunari have played a larger role in things for Thedas in the last two games.

Even though I'm not really a dwarf player, I definitely think it's time we got a major focus on the dwarves. Two dwarven companions, a male and a female, both bisexual options... I am totally down for it.

We can only hope that dwarves are like buses - you wait seventeen years, then two come along at once. (Assuming DA4 arrives in 2017. Could easily be 2018.)

Before Inquisition, I was on tenterhooks waiting to find out who the romances would be and how'd they be gated so I could go on blackout and plan things out. If the first thing they announced about DA4 was a dwarf who was romanceable by other dwarves, I could probably leave the forums that day  . (Not that I would, necessarily. Three months of blackout turned out to be just about perfect for me.) At this point I figure I cannot afford to be fussy about the gender or disposition of the romanceable dwarf. I mean, I always play all the romances sooner or later anyway, so even if it turned out that I hated them I'd get around to it at some point.

Bump.

Let's see. Age, race, religious devotion, accent, clothing, coloring, facial features, body type...

Well...Here's something that can't be answered in just one word at least, but it's also very abstract. How well read and culturally aware would your ideal KISA be? I personally love the characters who do things like recite poetry. Of course, that's partly because I'm constantly reading (and writing) poetry myself, so that's just a like mindedness thing.

Well, you get me on the topic of likemindedness, and I'd probably find a way to make it so that I'm developing a character who's trying to bring the concept of sci-fi to Thedas... :P

Anyway, yes, freetime subjects! Well read in general is a good starting point - Give him an interest in sort of 'jack of all trades'-manship, where he's dabbled in a number of things, even things not normally expected of someone in his position. Not just combat skills and tactical movements but an interest in magical theory and even botany. The things that are looked down on as 'less legitimate' just because they aren't as well known (remember Wynne in Awakening, being dismissive of Ines and her research).

You know, given that example, which just popped into my head without me thinking about it, I think my head is basically saying 'make the next gay LI Matthew Lewis' (the guy who played Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter movies)...

I can go with that.

Yeah I'd like a KISA who values reading as well whether it's poetry, novels or thedas history or whatever well read would be nice. Maybe having some other unexpected talents as well like say cooking (something knights seem frequently portrayed as not good at... Alistair springs to minds). Actually I'd like to be able to define my PC as having hobbies too. Some way to further customise them, bring them more depth maybe in a conversation where you learn the KISA likes... whatever their interest(s) is/are.

I don't necessarily have to see or hear the character doing those things to know that they have those qualities. I'll cite Dorian as an example here and quote Oghren talking to Branka, "I remember marrying a girl you could talk to for one minute and see her brilliance." I don't mind someone being culturally dense as long as they are able to see that in themselves, be willing to listen to other perspectives, and be open to change; potential for growth is important.

Alistair has always been my go-to romance for DAO, but now I'm not sure if I will want to romance him again for the above reasons stated, particularly after being so used to both Fenris (who I also perceive as intelligent) and Dorian. I don't think Alistair is dumb or stupid, but the comparison just seems lacking.

Sorry I haven't been around much.  <hugs>  I've been geeking out over Mass Effect stuff for awhile since I came back.   :)

I need some help.  I think Traynor is trying to ninjamance me.  So, I've gotten back to ME3 after my computer issues.  I've been doing the Kaidan romance, mostly thanks to the feedback in this thread.  I've finished the Coup and Traynor wants to come up to play chess.  For the first time, I got only two choices when she first comes in.  Both of them flirts that are asking her to take a shower with my Shep.

Not sure how to handle this.  Should I hold off on that conversation until after I get the Kaidan romance locked back in?

I've done one FemShep run, with a loyal Kaidanmancer, and yeah, the shower option comes up. You let her go in and she talks about someone she's interested in, being coy about her interest in Shepard. You'll get a dialogue option of effectively 'join her' or 'wish her good luck,' and basically can play Shepard as entirely oblivious to her flirtations, and Traynor drops the subject after.

Basically, it's a lock-in option for Traynor's romance, but if you're not romancing her, you have an out, so you don't need to delay it if you don't want to. Of course, if you don't want Shepard to (unintentionally) lead her on, yeah, hold off, but it doesn't have an effect on anything, so it's really up to you and how you're characterizing Shepard.

Ah, excellent.  Thank you very much.  I'll let her use the shower then and tell her to enjoy it on her own.  :)

More related to the topic: Kaidan is adorable.

I detest that scene!! Last time I went through it I had to restrain myself  I'd already made up my mind that I would stay loyal to Liara, so I literally stared at my screen for a good ten minutes fighting with myself what to do.

Now where was I?

Oh yes. Sorry to interrupt, but a recent Inquisitor I made actually made me think of this thread so I thought I would visit and throw in my two cents.

This is Eddard Trevelyan. He was created to romance Josephine because I can't romance her as a female player-character; Sera is far too taunting. :P

Now when I make a character I tend to give myself a rough idea on what that person's personality is like, and what decisions they will make. He is a warrior (sword and shield) and believes in the Maker. He is very serious, maybe a little quiet.. but all round nice guy. As opposed to the smartarse, bitchy carta Dwarf I have going on a different playthrough but that's another story.

I guess what I wanna know is, does personality/beliefs play an important role in defining a KISA character? Or is it more about combat role?

I ask this because I honestly do believe that bisexual/gay rogue type is a bit overdone, though I do adore the likes of Sera and Isabela. I like that they are rebellious and have filthy sense of humours.

I think it's both personality/belief (noble, selfless, living up to an ideal, etc.), which is more or less the trope, and the combat role (i.e., frontline fighter). Not just because both are tied up with a trope, but because they also help combat stereotypes. For example, strong, charismatic and bisexual male KISA who is really monogamous would undercut some of the stereotypes the so-called depraved bisexual trope (which in a way the IB fits). Though in a way the IB himself counters a different trope I see floating around a lot lately.

The non- or anti-monogamy trope also applies to the homosexuals too, no matter how many examples are thrown out to combat it. Unfortunately.

I am curious about the IB trope you're referring to with the last sentence though. You can PM me if you don't want to clutter the thread. I don't care for him in general so I don't pay much attention to what is said about him along those lines.

At any rate, I thought that the KISA, for men, would basically be a Cullen-type. While I think the use and inclusion of the gay or bi KISA is important, I think it actually seems rather boring. I don't adore Dorian to bits just because he looks a certain way or because of his personality, it's a whole package deal. So I think that a KISA-type would have to be interesting in other ways in order to draw me in.

I'd like some examples of other KISA types with which to compare and perhaps not think that it's a boring trope. Not that tropes by themselves are boring, just that I feel this one is... kinda.

YES!  I was super bummed when I saw that they started your PC in a hetero marriage and just assumed that it meant that I would be forced to be straight.  Best case scenario, I thought, would be the return of the "Confirmed Bachelor" perk and then I'd have to head canon that my PC was bisexual.  But to know that s/s romance is guaranteed?  That makes me very happy!  Fallout gay KISA, perhaps?  Like a Brotherhood KISA maybe?

Not too happy about the whole playersexual thing in Fallout 4, but at least people won't be forced to headcanon the hell out of the game. But it's a Bethesda game at the end of the day, so I doubt the romances are going to any good or any more than a few lines here and there.

To be fair, we don't know that they are playersexual.  They could be bisexual, with actual dialogue around it.  Not like Skyrim, which was pretty much playersexuality since they didn't acknowledge sexuality/gender at all.  We also don't know how many we are talking about here.  They said all of the humans and that there would be 12 followers altogether, but we don't know how many followers are human.  I'm thinking no more than 8 (we know that there's a robot and dog and I'd be surprised if there wasn't a super mutant and at least one ghoul).  I'm going to be positive about this until I have reason to think otherwise.

I heard a rumor that apparently in the menu when you start, and switch to your "wife", there was the option to switch her gender. I think you could possibly start in an s/s marriage. Otherwise, why put something that option in?

I don't think so.  If you watch the video, there's a "sex" option, but that just switches between husband and wife.  Spoilers just in case:

Basically, all of the human followers are bisexual and, if you want, the PC can be as well.  But none of them are gay.  A bit of bummer, that last part (especially since Arcade, Veronica, and Christine were all gay in FO:NV), but given that I was expecting to be required to be straight, I'll take s/s romances and a bisexual PC for sure!

They've announced two human followers, by the way.

On topic, I don't think a KISA has to be boring though there are plenty of examples where they end up that way if the focus is solely on "virtuous knight". So long as they have personality with the knightly virtues they could be a well rounded and interesting archetype. Personally I like the idea of either a wicked sense of humour or a bright, bubbly, joyous, unrestrained type of person in a KISA mould... serious when fighting but happy and well adjusted when not while still sticking to their code or whatever made them a KISA in the first place.

I keep typing, then deleting my reply to the whole Fallout 4 thing, because chances are, I would inadvertently be making remarks of a certain kind of tone in regards to the whole "your protagonist has to start off in a heterosexual relationship" in the beginning of the story... but other than that, you can make near any kind of character-protagonist you want (sorry. Just this once. Sorry again).

Anyway, I at least appreciate Fallout 4 being more inclusive with their character relationships this time around, and I'm hoping their writing would be up to speck. I am looking forward to the game, despite first person shooters not being my thing- thankfully there's the whole third person perspective, so I'll be using that. Just... baby steps, it's progress, and I'm looking forward to hearing more about this game.

And Preston Garvey seems nice, but I haven't seen enough of that character to make any actual judgement. He just looks cool, though.
