I could argue that Anders, for better or worse, has significant plot importance.  He is a required companion.  You have to recruit him in order to advance the plot.  He's, possibly, the first companion that you can recruit after the Act I introduction.  He can't be killed until the very end of the game and his actions are one of the most important plot points in DA 2.  Realistically, his actions are probably the most important plot point to come out of DA2, with regard to the larger DA lore.  He's unquestionably bisexual, regardless of what people say on the boards.  And he's been connected to both the Warden and Hawke.  We might not all like him or agree with his very polarizing actions, but Anders is incredibly plot important and definitely a non-straight male character.

I completely and whole-heartedly agree. I was devastated when I couldn't romance Alistair or Sebastian because their respective personalities appealed to me so much more than Zevran/Anders/Fenris...

I would love to see a gay Chevalier who is a kind-hearted noble that doesn't always see eye to eye with some of the Chevalier's methods, but agrees with their principles. I want him to have a sexy French accent, like Riordan

A bit late here, but just have to disagree on one point:
 

I agree we diverged from the subject a lot, like sandalisthemaker also pointed out, but better to establish a common language than work with assumptions about the other side.

 

I believe market works equally for everyone, and the supply will always meet the demand. If there is a demand for gay knights, they will inevitably appear. If some crazy people go on a crusade (pun not intended) against the gay knights, I wouldn't support these people. But it doesn't seem ok to me when people demand from an author to adapt his work in order to fit what they want to experience. In my view he is the author, and he has the message he wants to express, and we are the audience. If someone wants to be an author then let him, but trying to dictate to an author is bad taste.

 

I'll try to use myself as an example. I'm a historian by education. Currently, I feel an extremely strong urge to read fiction based in late 15th century Italy. In this I represent an immensely smaller minority audience than gay audience. I recognize that and I don't feel angry over it. I don't demand from anyone to make a game or a film, or a book that fits my interests. That's the analogy I make.

Fundamentally disagree here. Dragon Age is a fairly formulaic franchise, with each new installment containing roughly 9 companions, anywhere between 4-8 of them being romanceable. It is a fair assumption that there WILL be a gay or bisexual character in a possible Dragon Age 4, possibly even 1 each of each gender for a total of 4. In light of this, we are asking that, given the character concepts likely aren't even in their infancy, they CONSIDER that one of the LGBTQIetc romances they include stray from the skanky/roguish/angsty/terroristic otherwise unwholesome archetypes we've been given in the past, as that both plays on existing negative stereotypes of gays, and is also unrepresentative of the population.

It's not like people are petitioning a novelist in a series that already has a solid cast list, to retcon a previously straight character into being gay. We (the consumers) KNOW that there are a certain number of slots for future characters, and ask that they CONSIDER changing it up a bit.

Yep.  I'm with you on this.  Anders, in no way, fits the archetype for this thread.  He was plot relevant, though.  Just thought I'd get that out of the way before someone else comes and starts picking apart the request by saying "Well there has been a plot relevant queer man in the past.  Why are you demanding even more from the devs!?!?1!" 

 

Yeah, I would like the Carth, Bastila, Dawn Star, Kaidan, Ashley, Alistair, Morrigan, Miranda, Jacob, Cassandra type in DA 4 to be gay or bisexual.  Kaidan gets an asterisk after his name because he was revealed to be bisexual in the third game, but in ME, he was not available to males or identified as bisexual.

I agree, straight people do have more than enough, and it'd be great to see more prominent non-heterosexual representation (in a way that isn't stereotypical) 

 

edit: I guess I should add that I'm a straight guy, if only to dispel the "only LGBTQ people want LGBTQ content" argument that pops up all too frequently.

Most of the folks posting already know that there'll probably be no more than one lesbian and one gay LI in any given party.  I know I would like to see more in any given game, but it's unlikely.  This thread is requesting a knight as a gay and/or lesbian interest in future games.   We're not asking to any sort of romance to be added to Inquisition, but we do have ideas for down the road.  If you feel the DA games have too many LGBT characters, then you're probably playing the wrong series.  Or you're at least in the wrong thread.

Regardless of gender/orientation, I'd like to see a truly evil LI. Not like ma boo Morrigan who was a softie on the inside, but someone with whom we can hold hands as we cackle together into the night amidst the terrified screams of our potential victims   (I probably wouldn't romance that character as I mostly play "the good guy" but I'd love to have the option).

 

OT: Also, I'd like to see an asexual romance. I'm still not sure what the term encompasses, but there it is.

Oh yeah.  I totally forgot about the dwarven prostitutes.  I don't often use the brothels in the game, so I tend to forget about the characters there unless they are plot driven (like Jethann and Idunna) or 'controversial' (like Serendipity).

We haven't really seen a non-straight male dwarf. Besides prostitutes.

 

Branka and Hespith were both femDwarves in a relationship.  A gay male dwarf would go against the typical physical stereotype of gay men in media.  I'd like to see one.

 

Mae.  Yes.  In DA4.  Must have.  Love her!!!  She'd easily be in a position of importance in a game that takes place in Tevinter, which I have a feeling DA4 will, and it will tie in with the war between Tevinter and the Qunari. 

 

The innocent, naive guy would fit well for me for the KISA companion if the KISA is male.

You know, I actually forgot about them as well. I just saw an opportunity to make a dumb joke and went ahead without making the connection, my bad! I'm still not sure why brothels are still in the game to be honest (but that's a topic for another thread).

Yeah, I think you'd need a very open ended campaign to make room for truly evil companions. We're usually heroes, no matter what.

 

Morrigan wasn't even close. I consider her kind of a "chaotic neutral". All she cares about is her freedom and survival. 

 

Maybe the most evil was Morinth and the end of Kotor, but those ended up falling flat afterwards.

In seriousness I think you're kind of right, full totally evil would be hard to do and have them mesh with all potential player choices in a way that would make sense.

 

SWTOR has some companions that lean more towards outright evil and they work quite well - but the interaction you have with them if far more limited and less detailed than in any of the DA games. Though if we go all the way back to Baldur's Gate Edwin was evil - as well as awesome

Well, besides the general depicting trans or crossdressing (because they later stated that Serendipity was meant to be a drag queen) characters for laughs, there was a bug in MotA during the scene with Serendipity.

 

If you paid for her services at the Blooming Rose, she recognizes you at the Chateau, is happy to see you, and calls you "Honey Badger."  (She calls male Hawke this, at least. IDK about femHawke).  Hawke then gets flustered and Tallis says, "Awkwaaaaard."   Nothing too bad about this to me, since the scene is pretty funny. 

 

However, due to the bug, if you've never paid for Serendipity's services at the Blooming Rose, she does not recognize Hawke.  She merely shows up with Bran, and Tallis *still* says "Awkwaaaaaaard."  This is bad, because it comes across that Serendipity herself is being mocked simply for being trans and showing up at the party.

I actually always thought that Tallis awkward, was regarding a the fact, that Bran - as a political player in Kirkwall - would try to date her outside Kirkwall and then runs into Hawke. Sort of like meeting your supervisor, with someone,you know is not her/his spouse. *shrug*

Wow, I'd heard people refer to that line in MotA, but I didn't realize it was all caused by a bug.  It definitely came across as Tallis being uncomfortable with Serendipity herself.

 

As for future LGBT romances, I really hope to see a butch lady someday.  A dwarf or qunari or just a strong warrior lady who digs cute girls.  I'd especially love her if she were a KISA, or the stoic broody type, but I'd take any kind of butch female character at this point.

Hmm...

A gay or bi, HEAVILY RELIGIOUS male, would be interesting, extra points if family oriented...

A dwarf. Or female Qunari.

A demisexual male, similar to Merril... I want some guy to fall in love with me .

And a transperson romance would be interesting, regardless of gender preference. (I wouldn't want Mae to be this one though, I think her arc is great without romance so far, especially since she has so many lingering feelings over Thorold).

 

As for Maevaris Tilani, duh. Of course I want her to become official canon, and be in game (I have this theory that if Alistair is dead/doesn't chase down his father, Mae actually foils Aurelian's plans. It takes her much longer, but she enters the Fade, forces the same confrontation, and destroys the Magrallen). Also have I mentioned that since I read her in the DA comics, it has been my dream to voice her?

A religious male queer character could be pretty cool, although I would hope he is a little more pragmatic about it than Leiliana and Sebastian were. Those two managed to annoy me and I actually am a religious person. I want more "I'm an intelligent, reasonable person who happens to have faith" and less "I live everyday like it's Bible camp."

 

Hopefully Cassandra can fill that void for me.
