Yeah, I'm kinda worried about everything here in Feedback & Suggestions . I think that at least some of the threads could be moved to General Discussion or Story & Characters instead of exiled in the general franchise forums, but that would require more active modding than we usually get these days.

 

Anyway, in happier if somewhat off-topic news: I found a gay (or possibly bi or pan) character in another cRPG! Not one with romances, but I was happy to see one existing out in the wild anyway. (Warning: spoilers for Shadowrun: Hong Kong below the cut. Although the reference to the character's sexuality is hidden deep in a dialogue tree where I'm betting most people will never find it.)

So, your character in the new Shadowrun game has a ork foster brother, Ducan Wu. Insofar as there are KISAs among Shadowrunners, he fits the bill - former street kid turned corporate law enforcement until his life goes to hell again, loyal and honest, has a violent temper but works on restraining it, likes to do things by the book and enjoys working out. (Like, really enjoys working out. He ends up getting saddled with Gun Show as a street name .) Anyway, about twelve hours into the game, this conversation happened:

 

Duncan: Hey, remember that time I really pissed off our foster dad?

 

PC: Do you mean that time you broke his rule about no dating before graduation?

 

Duncan: Nah, this wasn't about David.

 

Given that this is the kind of game where romantic relationships only come up if you're ambushing someone on the way to their mistresses' house, that's all we hear. I have no idea if he's into women as well - or if the rest of the companion characters are into guys, girls or goats.  Duncan's character development is all centred around his relationship with the PC and your foster father. But it's really nice to see more and more LGBT characters just popping up in video games like it's no big deal (because it shouldn't be.)

 

Cool.  Nice find.  I love reading about how LGBT characters are becoming more and more common in games and it's really treated as a throw-away remark.  Now I need to go google Duncan (sexy name, btw) and see what I think of him.....!

Also relevant to your interests: one of the other companions is an awesome dwarf! She's a top-notch decker who carries a freaking grenade launcher everywhere you go.

 

Shadowrun: Dragonfall also had a companion who'd been in a same-sex relationship, but that surprised me a lot less since hot lesbians aren't exactly controversial material, even if their ex-girlfriends belong to Satantic cults.

Is0bel's the best! So adorable. If they did the whole romance thing I would so be all up in that. But I think the closest we had to that was with Dragonfall when you being able to say you used to be in a relationship with Monika, iirc.

 

And when you mentioned there was a LGBT character in Shadowrun, I thought I knew who it was then I realised he was from Mirrorshades, (totally separate from the games).

Just to add another game with a gay character: Mortal Kombat 10! The character is Kung Jin, one of heroes of the story. Also not made a big thing of just hidden in a bit of dialogue (though confirmed by devs). Nice to see LGBTQ characters popping up more frequently

Look at it this way: the nice thing about PC games is that they'll probably still be for sale on Steam or GOG or whatever the new hot platform is if you get something that can run them in ten or twenty years. So Is0bel, Duncan and X-Com (which is inteed amazing!) will still be waiting for you .

Yeah, I agree with this.  We're really looking forward with this request and it does mean that we can keep this going for future games as well if it's here.  It's just such an obscure place.  But, we've all found it again since the move, so hopefully others will too.  We'll just have to make sure that we keep attending to it so it doesn't get forgotten!

Sometimes, when I listen to Korbin and Belinda talk in MP, I just think: I want it. I just want to have them for companions and LIs in the next game. Korbin, with his steady and gentle papa wolf thing and Belinda with her cheerful warmth. It's just, they'd both be perfect for the gay KISA, and they're both so different that it wouldn't feel like too much of the same.

Bruh.... this completely flew over my head. I chose that line and I had no idea it was that vague. Reading it again, I can see it.

This game is amazing, it also has LGBT NPCs, kinda bummed out it doesn't have romances but I guess it's better that way since one of the devs said the game is limited and they don't have many resources to go that far. Not that it bothers me, the game is perfect the way it is. But damn, the companions.

Your companions are all vague until proven otherwise so that's also great. Gobbet and Eiger (the other cute and oh so awesome and broody troll in Dragonfall).. just kill me.   And I just realized I have a thing for ork/troll ladies in this damn game. 

Glory is also a lesbian or at least has shown interest only in a girl since she had a gf. Also from Dragonfall.

It would be a refreshing change for a gay or bi companion to be:

 

The first or one of the first characters our PC meets. (Like Alistair, Morrigan, Aveline, Varric, Cassandra, and Solas)

 

Essential to the plot or at least a part of the plot.  (Alistair, Morrigan, Varric, Cassandra, and Solas)

 

Not completely optional/skip-able (Alistair, Aveline, Varric, Cassandra, Solas)

 

Not able to be kicked out of the party. (Alistair- *at least not until the end-game*, Aveline, Varric, Cassandra, Solas)

 

So far, only heterosexual companions have met this criteria in Dragon Age.

 

In fact, ***Not a single gay or bisexual companion meets any one of these criteria*****  With two possible kind of, sort of exceptions.

 

One could argue that Leliana can be recruited fairly early, but she is completely optional unlike the other two early recruits who have mandatory face time. Don't go into the tavern and Leliana doesn't exist.

 

One could argue that Isabela is essential to DA2's plot, but I would argue it was her *off-screen* actions that set the plot of Act 2 into motion. Also, she is completely optional and I believe she can even be missed completely if you don't go to the Hanged Man during a certain window in Act 1.

 

Clearly a tank warrior usually fills an important role in the story since they are often essential for gameplay reasons, and as we can see, fits many of the above criteria. So hopefully a gay/bi KISA would fill the role.

 

Edit:  Can Bull be kicked out/driven away? I think he might actually be an exception in that regard.

Bull can't be kicked out, so yes he is an exception. 

 

It does seem to be a trend for BW to have the LGB party members be optional, with little story importance. I think Dorian was a step in the right direction though, as he is very important to the Redcliffe plot.

 

Of course In Hushed Whispers can be skipped entirely, so that doesn't put it on the same level of say, Alistair's involvement with Landsmeet, or Morrigan and the Dark Ritual.

Every game so far, the intro to the story has a woman who's crucial to the progression. Morrigan, Aveline, Cassandra. In at least two of those cases, they're confirmed straight. Well, and when I think about it there's always a crucial straight male too. Alistair, Varric, and Solas. So, I'm not really saying anything Sandal didn't say, but it is interesting to think about. Accidental or not, it's a definite trend.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned here, but Ser Gilmore from DA:O fits in quite well (albeit in mod form...)

 

He's by far the best romance I've had in the entire Dragon Age series, even more so if you're a Human Noble. He's a Warrior Class Champion. He willingly gave up his own life to save you and you used to be lovers until your parents decided to split you up. CAN IT GET ANY BETTER?!

 

I didn't care for the Inquisition romances. I preferred having a choice when talking to someone rather than press X button to start romance. Seems rather...forced.

 

Inquisitor: Hi Companion/Advisor, you're annoying, ugly and boring. You're also wrong about eveything, so just go die.

LI: That hurt...

Inquisitor: (Press Heart button)

LI: I love you sooooooo much my love.
