I'm also going to be that guy, and say that I would like the KISA to be a person of color. Because if we're custom ordering a husband/wife/lover/ then I'll take mine browned please.

You know, I was thinking about this recently and this is one area that they do a really nice job.  If we think of the m/m options, there's a nice mix of racial diversity.

 

Sky - asian

Zev - tanned skin elf

Anders - white

Fenris - not really sure how to describe him

Kaidan - possibly of Singaporean descent

Steve - latino

Iron Bull - grey skinned non-human

Dorian - equivalent of southeast asian descent

 

Really, the only m/m love interest who is definitely white is Anders.  So, it would be nice to see both PoC m/m options, but also to see another white guy.  Like a Carver or Blackwall or (my favorite) maybe a ginger guy.....?

Well to be fair he's a fairweather ginger. Meaning his beard is always red, but his hair vairies based on the season.

Agreed about Kaidan.  I've always thought of him as mixed race too (maybe a Singaporean mother and white Canadian father?).

I wasn't complaining , just passing an observation (plus, I've classified mixed race under PoC too, as they often go through the same ___). I prefer the darker shades , freckles are just 'meh' to me, I guess it comes from being red-green colour deficient, carrot red kinda bugs my eyes physically... And I am both lucky and unlucky to be young and slowly going grey already, I come from a family of 'white haired before their time'.

As a non-white person, all the gay exclusive characters have been non-white actually with Cortez and Dorian. Kaidan is Brazillian since his face model is Brazillian, and they look very similar (obviously), Sky is Asian (It's not like they could be something else). I have a feeling that Bioware is trying to be progressive by making the gay characters to be both minority and gay. It's actually a nice break from the usual gay white males we see constantly on TV which catered to gay white audience. I'm tired of seeing only gay white people in the media to be honest.

I totally agree with the unbalanced representation of gay men of color in the media. I love that Bioware hasn't had a bunch of Cullen and Alistair clones that look like they just left the gym in Chelsea. I think it's also important to make sure that we don't swing the pendulum completely in the other direction, though. A balance is always preferred in my opinion.

I want a butch lesbian, but I fear they have permamently been relegated to "bad stereotype" area. I don't think a Butch lesbian will happen for a long time in Bioware games because a lot of non LGBT people call bad sterotype on it drowning out the actually lesbian people who want them. I would hate for flamboyant gay men to have to deal with the same.

 

As far as characters it would be cool to see as far as sexual minorities?

Gay prince/princesses. A gay Sebastian would have been magnificent for you guys.

 

A bisexual that is not portrayed as defined by their libido one way or another but just says it out right. Isabela/Jack/Oghren/ Anders/ Zevran/Aveline all had stories of more than one partner. Just have a bisexual do the same except, have them mention more than just one gender. Don't base it on the gender of the pc, just have them be talks of their past or whatever. Or even have them mention it in a conversation with another person.

That's exactly why I'd want to see how Bioware tackles a butch lesbian character.  Because they are so good at taking bad stereotypes and spinning them into something much more interesting and human.

They would probably have to be Orlesian or Antivan I think. Orlais considers SS to be a quaint quirk, and Antiva is so used to it they don't consider it anything in particular at all. But Ferelden still sees it as highly unusual, odd and worthy of note (though not immoral). Thus a Fereldan SS-specific is already against the typical cultural/societal grain.

 

Dorian is only a rebel because his homeland is full of d***bags already.

There's also Fenris, kinda, though even when you're on good terms with him he's a bigoted zealot. There's no such thing as a character without some flaw or darkness.

Alistair is loyal, determined, witty. But he's also an emotional manchild who whines if he doesn't get his way.

Cullen is compassionate, pious, endearing. But he's also a vengeful warrior whose anger blinds his reason.

 

Also, what is wrong with Leliana? I never cared for her personally (to me she was a non-event) but how is she a 'bad girl'? Because she kills people for personal/financial reasons? Like LITERALLY EVERYONE in your party?

Also not bi/lesbian or am I missing something? Dave only listed the m/m romance options not the f/f ones. For those the list is more like this:

Leliana - white (redhead)

Isabella - dark skinned, moorish spain influences (if game engine rendered her properly)

Liara - blue alien

Sam Traynor - looks tanned to me

I have no idea who Gilbert Gottfried is but the name is masculine to me so I would think Cab would secure a female to voice my ideal KISA since she's a lady so... na?

I just want to say that I love the fact that there is a thread about this. My friends know I'm gay, and we're all gamers, but they don't get the struggle. I'm glad that Bioware has let us have a space to talk about being gay and gaming and having people who understand. I love this place.
