You know, I was thinking about this recently and this is one area that they do a really nice job.  If we think of the m/m options, there's a nice mix of racial diversity.

Sky - asian

Zev - tanned skin elf

Anders - white

Fenris - not really sure how to describe him

Kaidan - possibly of Singaporean descent

Steve - latino

Iron Bull - grey skinned non-human

Dorian - equivalent of southeast asian descent

Really, the only m/m love interest who is definitely white is Anders.  So, it would be nice to see both PoC m/m options, but also to see another white guy.  Like a Carver or Blackwall or (my favorite) maybe a ginger guy.....?

Well, I am Southeast Asian Guy. I don't think Dorian is SEA. He's more like South Asian guy.

For all of the guy we have. Sky and Kaidan is my taste (in Appearance). I really like to see Sky in modern day engine. I'm sure he'll so hot.

in short version, all i want is Kaidan/Sky + Noble + No Dark Side

The discussion of "butch" lesbian characters got me thinking - I'd like a "femme" kind of guy for an M/M LI. We've never had one.

Dorian is kinda flamboyant to me. If you mean like talk with a lisp and hip swaying then no thanks, especially if we only have 2 romance spot.

I don't see the problem with having one "femme" (not necessarily with or without the attributes you describe) M/M LI when there's at least two options.

Because I don't want to be stuck with just one LI option. It's seflishness on my part since I prefer more musculine guys.

Yup. I haven't played a Bioware game where I like both LIs. I wouldn't mind an extra romance if they have it, but I want at least 2 romances to be masculine, so I could have more choices. Romance is a big part of why I play games like Bioware.

You know this thread reminded me about a post on the borderlands forum about Axton, the classical butt-kicking soldier type with a chiseled jaw who is also canonically bi, though gearbox cut the soundbytes about it from the game. Basically, the poster said that he just couldn't see Axton as a bi and instead headcanoned him as the stereotypical womanizer military type and wrote off the soundbytes and the writers confirmation about Axtons orientation.  While the poster didn't explicitly say it, i got the feeling that his reason for not believing it was because Axton doesn't fit in to any gay/bi male stereotype.  Basically tough guy=not gay. Now, as a bi dude who is 'masculine' and hardened by 10 years in a job that requires body armor this irked me, but it got me thinking.... I can't name a single 'tough guy'  male character off the top of my head in any fiction who were of the gay/bi orientation. Sky was a rogue and Kaidan a caster/techie archetype.  Iron Bull is going to be the first one since Axton. I know, not 'knightly', but at least its a step forward in breaking one stereotype about male gay/bi folks.

Edit: Typing faster than thinking.

Also not bi/lesbian or am I missing something? Dave only listed the m/m romance options not the f/f ones. For those the list is more like this:

Silk fox/Princess Lian - asian

Leliana - white (redhead)

Isabella - dark skinned, moorish spain influences (if game engine rendered her properly)

Merill - white

Liara - blue alien

Sam Traynor - looks tanned to me

Josephine - PoC

Sera - white

So is that balanced?

I have no idea who Gilbert Gottfried is but the name is masculine to me so I would think Cab would secure a female to voice my ideal KISA since she's a lady so... na?  :P

I'm sad I can only like this once... so you get another like here too. + like. This is totally what I'd like and why and unfortunately why it might not happen.  :(

Samantha mentions that she's Indian in the Citadel DLC.

As far as Cassandra, I've heard a lot of people saying she isn't white, but I've never seen a link or quote or anything.

Eh, I see where he's coming from. It's not that I didn't like Steve, it's just that he was completely eclipsed by Kaidan in my eyes. Now, if James had been a queer character, that would have actually been a tough decision. Kaidan probably would have still won, but at least there would have actually been a fight for Shepard's affection.

I love that this thread keeps coming back to how amazing and dreamy Kaidan is......  Y'all better stay away from digital boyfriend, though.

It definitely demonstrates the appeal of the KISA type character for m/m audiences.  Thanks to sandal for bringing it up in the DA context!

I think in like steve so much because I see a lot of myself in him; a culmination of pic and gay who is a stereotype of neither. Though kaidan will always be my first ME love...I mean, I'll stay very far away from him Mr. Daveliam.

I actually twice create a play through with the purpose of romancing Steve and in both cases has changed my mind to 'Hmmm, i'll just romance Kaiden again' by the second visit in the hospital. I really liked Steve as a character, but Kaiden was just too damn cute :)

Me too.  I jumped for Kaidan on my first playthrough.  Then I did a second playthrough specifically for Steve.  Got to the hospital scenes and gave up resisting Kaidan's charms.  After that, I did a series playthrough with the whole purpose of romancing Steve.  Got to the "losing you was like losing a limb" speech from Kaidan in ME 2 and couldn't bring myself to turn him down and just resigned to romancing Kaidan again.

So, at this point, I ended up deciding that my only options were to either do a new playthrough where I left him on Virmire so that I couldn't romance him in ME 3.  Or, do a partial game playthrough where I just start at the Steve-dance floor scene and end at the last pre-battle scene on Earth.  The former required me to kill off my favorite guy, so I opted for the latter.  It remains the only way that I've done the Steve romance.  And, his romance was perfectly fine.  It would actually rank higher than all of the DA m/m romances for me.  He just lives in Kaidan's shadow forever in my opinion.

Epilogue:  I did another series playthrough and ended up romancing Kaidan again......  The irresistible allure of the KISA.......

GUYZ!!!! I just remembered (after rereading about the love of gingers in this thread) that there was a movie with a gay KISA who is a redhead and WASN'T played for laughs. It was that not so great movie Our Highness with James Franco. Anyway, Boremont Bioware Forum; Fourm, this is Boremont:

They would probably have to be Orlesian or Antivan I think. Orlais considers SS to be a quaint quirk, and Antiva is so used to it they don't consider it anything in particular at all. But Ferelden still sees it as highly unusual, odd and worthy of note (though not immoral). Thus a Fereldan SS-specific is already against the typical cultural/societal grain.

Dorian is only a rebel because his homeland is full of d***bags already.

I don't think a gay KISA would *have* to be Orlesian or Antivan (although it would be interesting to learn more about those cultures from said KISA). A gay character could come from anywhere. A culture being more or less accepting of homosexuality has nothing to to with whether a person living there is gay, bi, or straight.

Also, Dorian being gay isn't tied with him being a rebel. (By that, I mean he isn't *choosing* to be gay as a way of rebelling against his culture or family).  At least I sincerely hope not, because that would be..... very problematic in my eyes and would send a very unfortunate implication.  I would be upset if that happened.  People don't *choose* to be gay. Certainly not 'just because.'

But masculine is all subjective. Like, I think Dorian is pretty masculine. Whereas I think the IB is just a caricature that defies sexual attraction. I'm so not into him that he honestly makes me realize what it would be like to be straight. Which is kind of boring, frankly. :P

True enough. Just that !Glorious Moustache!™ is a mage, a traditionally second-line support type while IB is of the in-your-face-with-a-big-goddamn-axe-while-insulting-your-parentage type. And a big goddamn axe comes with a permanent +100 masculinity bonus :P

I loved Steve so much, but I will say that Kaidan's romance is much more powerful just because you've spent three games (yes he's not really in ME2 but you have that scene on Horizon so loaded with erotic tension and glorious maple syrup quality emotional sap) with him, where as Steve takes the role that was previously done by ship auto pilot in ME2.

If it were down to just personality and looks, I'd have to go with Steve, because he was so fine, and was actually interesting to talk to, where as to me Kaidan had the personality of farina. Blah blah blah my students that I'm not sure I really care about but I am going to talk about them because I don't want to talk about anything else. Blah blah blah we get past Horizon by just not talking about it. Blah blah blah we don't talk about anything do we? I just kind of squirm here and sigh.

Kaidan and Mshep should have had their own dialogue. I saw a few nice elements but nothing seemed real to me.

The banter between missions Steve had was sweet and sexy.    Really wish Kaidan had more of that with mSHep.

The romance seemed more like an after thought and they basically recycled the stuff they did with FShep.     My male headcanon is always going to be mSHEP/Cortez. :)
