For the "Would you prefer the KISA be gay or bi?" question, I would have to say I would prefer it if they were of an orientation that allowed both genders to be applicable for romance.
I know, and you have the angry German accent.
It's not angry it's lovable. It conveys my constant need for affections

Poor Danse, he's probably confused why you're mad at him half the time. ![]()
J/k, I'm sure you have a lovable voice, just playing around.
It's weird how when watching picture and they draw a young Danse, it all looks like Kaidan. XD

Omg don't use your sarcastic dialogue options on me!
I'd never yell at Danse in German! I'd serenade him with middle high German poetry.
I feel bad for derailing this thread all the time but where else can I get all this pent up emotion out!?
1 cup Danse + 1 cup Kaidan + 1 pinch of Maxson = my perfect KISA
I add this here as a bonus ...
Danse's itty bitty nips hahaha

As for gay versus bi KISA (of either sex)... it doesn't matter to me. What does matter, and what I would like to see, is the KISA expressing their attraction to the same sex IN GENERAL, not just at the PC. I'd be perfectly happy if a bi male KISA mentioned a boy he had a crush on in his youth, or if a bi female KISA had flirty dialogue with another lady in the party. Just something so it doesn't feel like they're "just gay for the PC".
Hnnnk. My brain just shorted out._______
This is something I find a bit unfortunate about the Dorian x Inquisitor romance. Dorian only ever has banter revolving around that if he is in a relationship with Bull, not the other way around. I don't really mind it, but I wonder at the disparity in circumstance.
They even have that with Dorian during the scene with Gisele. The whole 'BTW there are rumors about you, Inquisitor (player) and me (the only gay guy companion). Are you okay with that? Does that offend you???' And of course there is the dialogue option: *I don't like that idea.*
Again, to me it just seems like that option is there for the sake of appeasing the segment of the audience who thinks (male) homosexuality is offensive and gross. Granted, I never pick the option, so I'm not sure what the Inquisitor actually says if that dialogue option is chosen.
It's just something that I want to be avoided for any potential male KISA available for same-sex romance in the next game. I'd rather the KISA not initiate flirts with the player or the player not be put in situations such as the 'gay rumors' with Dorian. NOT because I don't think those things should happen. I actually DO think they should happen, but it's just that I know that it will come with the backtracking and bending over backwards from BioWare yet again to reinforce the fact that there is something offensive about male homosexual content to SOME players and their offense to such content needs to be catered to for some reason despite it clashing with Dragon Age's lore.
I hope this makes sense because it was kind of hard to write down.
I totally see where you're coming from with this in not wanting the orientation to be an issue: so-and-so just happens to be gay and let's move on. There needs to be more of this in media in general. "John is bringing his boyfriend over for dinner." "Okay, what time are they getting here?" Instead of, "Wait, John is gay?!" and that sort of thing. I would really like it to get to a point where those relationships are treated as normal, common, and boring as heterosexual ones, because they are.
I like to use the example of the show Madam Secretary where she is married (to a man) with three kids. The show uses the family aspect to counterbalance the government work, but the marriage is also a strong driving force of the show, and you can see that the husband offers strong emotional and moral support for her in her high stress job. They're still in love, and partners in every sense of the word. The reason I like to use this show is because nothing about it would change AT ALL if she were married to a woman. They could have had that as the case for this show, kept every other facet the same, and it would still be my favorite fictional couple on TV.
But this goes to the greater issue of representation in entertainment, which is getting way off topic.
At any rate...
There is another thread below that suggests that the Dorian romance revolves around that issue, when I don't think it does. The homosexuality in and of itself isn't important, and indeed it isn't even in Tevinter either. Dorian even says this in his post-sex conversation: "It's accepted, but taken no further." It about how having to maintain a certain appearance has affected Dorian's outlook on himself (which is negative) and impacted the relationships (and lack thereof) he's had with other men. Dorian has a really specific background and I think those choices in the narrative make sense for him. He reacts a certain way because of that and comes into the romance informed by that experience.
I think each character, and their approach to a romance, should be looked at with all of that in mind.
That said, I did find it a bit off-putting that one of the alternate paths (where Dorian initiates the first kiss), has not one, but TWO confirmation dialogues asking the player to confirm the romance. The only other DAI romance I've done is Cullen, so I don't know if that is repeated elsewhere, but I thought it a bit odd. I mean, there are a ton of
icons and everything, and you still feel the need to ask the player two times?
^Yep, absolutely no more 'does that offend you??' for m/m romances.
Again though, I really think it depends on the character and circumstance. When you hear Dorian say later on that he is concerned people will think he is using the Inquisitor it just puts all of his concerns regarding that into perspective.
But again, I can see how continued use of that device would get tiresome. I didn't care for it with Anders.
On another note, how do y'all feel about a questioning KISA, one who is plainly attracted to the PC but has never been in a same-sex relationship before?
I think there is a difference between "questioning" and never having been in a relationship. There are all sorts of reasons why a person of whatever orientation would not have been in a relationship or have had sex. That doesn't mean that it's not something they know they want and will pursue it given the opportunity.
To me, "questioning" means that the person isn't completely sure. If that is the case, I would prefer the person know they're gay. Their level of experience is another issue.
I don't.
Me either. I don't find it offensive, I just have no interest.
Then again, I can look at these gifs all day long...

I'm too smart to deal with the Sole Survivor's BS.
What Beth needs to do with the next DLC is expanded on the relationship. They added adopting children to Skyrim in a DLC, so there's a chance they would add marraige to the game. If they did add kissing to go alongside with DLC, a lot of people will buy it, and they would end up in a whole lot of cash.

On the topic of Dorian, his character was developed to be gay to begin with since it was something very personal to Gaider, so I have a feeling that his background and everything was tailored specifically for that purpose. This is why I would have like for them to approach the romance as they said, they should have written all the characters then decide who is romanceable. This would make sexual orientation becomes detached from the character instead of revolving around them.
A shy KISA who gains confidence along the way. That would be the best.
I'm also hoping that the KISA will be a dwarf or a qunari, and if he has to be a human, maybe something closer to Blackwall when it comes to looks.
Dorian was too pretty for me, and he was too much of an (un)intentional ladykiller, I mean his fanbase is mostly women, which honestly bothers me ever so slightly (I don't like when gay things get flocked by women, not sure if anyone shares my sentiment, but still. Obviously there are more women in the world, obviously everyone should like a character they like, but Dorian feels too much like he was written for gay men but ended up feeling like he was written for gay smut loving women lol, despite the efforts. He is more universally liked by all rather than the audience he was probably(????) meant to.)
I like my gay/bi male characters to have a bigger gay/bi male following, because then it feels like the character is well written because the audience he was possibly made for has reacted positively. I honestly don't see many men of sexual minority praising Dorian or his story (though this is from my narrow experience), which I sorta understand. If the KISA is gay, I hope they make the extra effort to make him feel like he was written for men who like men.
WE'LL SEE THOUGH.

yeah *cough* that's totally what I was on about *cough*

I don't think that should be an issue? I can like a straight character just as much as a gay character even if we don't share the same preference in romantic partners.

It isn't, but objectifying gay characters, people and couples is very popular right now (main perpetators being women) and nobody seems to bat an eye. I feel like a lot of buzz that comes for Dorian is from '' AWW LOOK AT THIS GAY OMG CUUUUTTEEEE GAY COUPLES ARE MEN ARE CUUTE '' and that sorta distances me from liking such characters. If it's not a big deal to you, extremely good, but it is annoying to me.
I also find it rather hilarious that characters like Chris Redfield and Dante seem to have a far superior gay following than a female following. I guess it just comes to show that gay gamers mostly enjoy masculine, '' straight-acting '' (I use this term loosely) male characters above anything else.

Well there are those of us out there who appreciate the character and relationship for more than the sexual aspect of it. But I agree that you might not know that from a lot of the fan works. But I will say that the Dorian thread is mostly filled with discussion on the character himself and has little in the way of "zomg he's so hot," with excessive amounts of sexually explicit fan works like in some other threads.
I'll add that I avoid most of the DA related tumblr fandom and only follow a few specific people. So I don't pollute my mind with excessive examples of objectification. It's really a matter of knowing that the material exists and making a conscious effort to avoid seeing it, and also of finding things that are not representative of that.

I truly believe that DG wrote the character the way he wanted to write him and didn't really care too much about an intended audience. He knew the character was going to be polarizing and controversial from the get-go, not only for Dorian's unapologetic view of his own sexuality, but also for his actual personality which can be somewhat off-putting for some people.

Shortly after the game's release there were a lot of gay players who were on both sides of the issue. Some felt that the story spoke to them and were emotionally impacted by it in relation to their own experience. Others felt that he was a gay stereotype and were dissatisfied that a "fully gay" character would have such a "cliche" story and felt that there was a tremendously wasted opportunity to break through some of those barriers. Just as with the straight players, the gay players were all over in their reaction to Dorian and his story arc.
Back to the topic... Although it's not my taste, I also think a Blackwall type would be interesting for a KISA. Or a dwarf. Oooo Legion of the Dead person. That has interesting possibilities. Really, we just need more dwarf stuff in the game. (I still haven't played Descent... I'm a jerk).
About KISA in general... I know that it is Knight in Shining Armor, but does it necessarily have to be a warrior type? Is that a requirement?

I truly believe that some love Dorian beyond just being a deliver of gay smut. But you know, when you hang around tumblr, you get discouraged at times. Especially since I feel like a lot of the time, gay characters aren't respected beyond being gay. But I doubt that's much of a problem here.
I think it's pretty cool how Dorian divides opinions though. It definitely gives BW some information on how to deal with LGBT characters. While I feel like Dorian is a victory of sorts, I hope we can do better next game. But since we already had our slightly stereotypical, homosexuality being a big part of the story kind of gay character, I doubt they'll do it again.
I think what really interests me in a Blackwall type of a gay character is that they feel like a person in real life that you really wouldn't believe to be gay at all, OR EVEN a person who'd think anything good about homosexuality to begin with. The voice actor, the story, the looks, all mixed up together to bring a character you didn't think that would be interested in men at all. And then he'd only be interested in men and it'd feel like a goddamn victory, plus it'd be cute as fuk. I sorta wished that Blackwall was at least bisexual, but I don't really like his romance so whatever, no loss there. Although he is SO HOT. Damn.
A qunari gay KISA would be amazing, but mostly because I agree with Sera and Dorian with their tallness n junk, WOOF.
But dwarves are cute, cuddly and hairy. It'd feel kinda right for a gay KISA to be a dwarf!? Idk, maybe that's just me, but I can see it in my head already!
I don't think a KISA necessarily has to be a warrior if his personality and romance are still there. Though I think the sword + shield only furthens the appeal.

Oh Chris was "straight acting" before, it's RE5 and his muscle gain that elevated him to a gay icon. Generally characters that have a huge gay following are bigger physically (Ryu, Chris, Joel, Drake etc.), the clear divide between yaoi and bara shows that.
A lot of gay art and fanfiction is written by women, and I generally don't have a problem with it. I do, when they do they perpetuate the bottom = girl view. That is a new kind of homophobia, when you treat one of the men like he's not even a man, but a substitute for a woman.

Tumblr is also the place, where you can read that learning sign language is appropriating deaf culture. Not a spring of knowledge and sensible reactions...
There will never be a gay character, who will satisfy all gay people, there is no hive mind. But many people did like him, and I think Gaider did a good job.
But yeah, more non stereotype-leaning gay characters please, that would be interesting.

It would be pretty... bad for Bioware to make another fabulous gay man (in the DA universe, anyway). Though, we still have the possiblity of the possible gay man in the next game being some kind of a tragic elfy rogue with a dark past and even darker present/future. Very mysterious, very tragic, very dark, very lack of any personality besides MYSTERIOUS.
Also, an inexperienced KISA is a great contrast to their usual behaviour. They are usually sure about their morals and views, having them explore something they aren't so experienced in is satisfying story-wise. Having the ability to introduce the character to intimacy would be nice, and that usually means that the relationship is more romantic, less centered on physicality and more on closeness.

I'd love the inexperience thing, but I'd prefer if he is inexperienced because he is shy and introverted, rather than inexperienced because he tried to suppress that affection and love part of himself and found things like love either tricky or unneeded, or just unworthy of him.
So rather than '' I've never been in this situation, I'm not sure how to feel, or what this feeling is.. whatislove '' I'd personally like '' I am at the same time so happy, yet so nervous, I've always looked at you, looked up to you, thinking maybe, I've played it in my head numerous times, what I'd say.. but now that we're actually here, I'm not sure what to do, it's like I'm paralyzed from feeling so much. This is all new to me.. ''
But now we're just grasping at straws and any developer looking through this thread shouldn't take to heart anything else except to release a gay (or bi if he has to be bi) KISA. THANK U.
