Been reading a race/role swap fanfiction of Dorian and Iron Bull, where IB is a soldier of the Imperium and Dorian is a tal-vashoth saarebas. In this universe, Iron Bull is the one with the storyline regarding his sexuality. He represses his feelings for the male sex and acts disgusted about it when anything regarding male x male relationships are brought up, because you know, him being a Vint and all and it's deemed as wrong in there. In the fade his repressed feelings are brought up.
It's basically a story where Dorian helps Bull to accept himself as a bisexual, which I thought was a nice idea. I wouldn't be 100% opposed to something like this happening.
But I'm also kinda frightened now on how homosexuality is going to be dealt with in the next game if we truly are going to Tevinter (though of course we are getting out, but still).
I'm gonna roll my eyes so hard my pupils will go into my sockets if we get another afterschool special. For the love of all that is holy, I hope that we don't play as the Inquisitor again since we may stuck with Dorian as the LI and continue with the whole charade of I'm gay but I can't tell anyone I'm gay. With a new protagonist, there is still a high chance the protagonist will still get homophobic comments about their sexuality since it's Tevinter. I hope they don't choose to make another afterschool special and just let gay people be happy instead of treating them like some kind of freaks that being put on displayed. I hope they have some kinds of retcon with the whole Tevinter like how they did with the Qun.

I'm not too worried, to be honest. I don't think they will go the Dorian route again (that would be silly and pointless). It all depends who the homosexual LI is.
I've seen some players express the desire for a LI (regardless of sexuality) who is into the whole Tevinter thing of lineage and power and so forth. If they have the LI be an altus like that, who happens to by gay, then the romance plot could revolve around them coming to consider the relationship as more important. OR -- and some players won't be happy with this, I'm not sure I would -- the LI loves you, but is not willing to give up that aspect of their life and wants you to be their paramour, rather like Alistair and the non-Cousland PC.
The Tevinter LI, if we have one, could also be a commoner or a slave (hopefully not, since we had Fenris), so I don't think the homosexuality would be that great a factor in that case.
The rest comes down to non-Tevinter LIs, and I also don't think there would be a problem there.
David Gaider had a message to send with Dorian, and some players, regardless of their own sexuality, liked or disliked it. I don't think they will go for the same tactic with another homosexual NPC, particularly if that NPC is a Tevinter altus LI. Been there, done that, as it were.
Perhaps the gay KISA, if we get one, will be a Qunari lady. Maybe we'll get another gay rogue. Perhaps some of the guys in this thread will get their longed-for burly dwarf dude, and first male dwarf LI. Maybe the gals will get to romance Charter, the Inquisition liaison, or Harding as the first female dwarf LI.

Had a brain issue and confused Dagna with Harding.

Tevinter is going to be scary, definitely. But I'm going to assume the start of the game revolves around Tevinter, then we go somewhere else. Either track down the elves working for Solas, or to Par Vollen/Seheron.

Hah, and here I was thinking just the opposite: start outside (perhaps Nevarra?) and work our way into Tevinter.

I wanna go back to Val Royeaux so it can be expanded a bit. I was left wanting for me, it's such a beautiful, weird place! Absolutely adored it.
I guess it all depends if Solas is going to be the big bad in DA4, or if the game is going to focus on Tevinter vs Qun. Or something else..?? Which would be odd, tbh. So many unanswered questions otherwise.
Maybe the gals will get to romance Charter, the Inquisition liaison and first female elf LI,
Wait, am I reading what you wrote wrong? We had 2 elf female LIs already.
Concerning the gay romance, I too think they will not do another Dorian again, and like always we will have companions from different countries. Who's to say we won't get a gay Ander, or Antivan, or Nevarran, or Avvar.
And they probably will add a country or two. Limiting themselves to Tevinter only would be weird after we got Ferelden and Orlais + outskirts. I suspect either Anderfels, Antiva, or Nevarra.

Er... yes I completely forgot about both Merrill and Sera. I'll edit.
I think the problem I have the most is the treatment between lesbians and gays, which are usually very happy and upbeat and don't get the discrimination baggage or drama you have with gay options.
All I'm hoping for is that both of our LIs will be outside of Tevinter, so we don't deal with the Tevinter bs they jam down our throat just to make a point.
I'm still on the fence about another qunari warrior, since we just have bulls. I hope we get a human warrior though since we never had a gay human warrior, and all the human male warriors have always been straight so far. I really want them to write for us a romantic story like they do for the straight ladies with Alistair, Cullen, and Kaidan.
I personally would like a male-romanceable male tal-vashoth saarebas.
I'm tired of gay mages at this point, I hope we get gay warriors. It just never happens before, and not sure if they have 2 bisexual qunari 2 games in a row.
We only have one gay mage. How can you be tired after just one gay mage? I get it, you didn't like Dorian's story and you want your perfect KISA but come on, a well-written, masculine mage can be just as good.
But alright, a warrior it is then. I don't care at this point, just give me a good well-written masculine gay character who doesn't find shame in his sexuality and his story has nothing to do with it his sexuality.

I'm just counting the bi options as well, even Kaidan is basically space mage (biotic), Anders, Dorian. Other options are Zevran which is an elf rogue, Fenris elf warrior, then Iron Bull which while is a warrior, has even more problems with the portrayal than even Zevran. I just want someone to encompass the masculine classic male. I do agree though with your last comment. It's just tiring at this point with stereotypical gay and bi characters Bioware has given us.
I didn't mean to offend, I hope not, just talking about my preference. ![]()

I think this is part of the reason why I didn't enjoy Dorian's romance that much. It really felt like a vehicle for Gaider's personal message and was ham handedly inserted into the setting where it didn't feel natural. He had said in an article that he was really excited to be able to tell this story through Dorian, and I wonder if he was already planning on moving on from DA after launch and this was his last hoorah. Compare that to him writing Fenris' romance, which he also said he wrote as from the perspective of a gay man, and it feels more like an authentic relationship between two people. It's not designed to send a specific message related to the real world.
That's really the thing. As much as I support writers writing for catharsis (because believe me, my laptop's documents folder is a testament to me doing just that), THIS. PARTICULAR. STORY. didn't fit the setting. Literally, as much as Gaider tried to weave it in, it just didn't fit. I mean, the very language of Thedas apparently lacks any distinguishing between sexualities, Dorian having to resort to the very purple prose-y 'I prefer the company of men' way to describe it. It's never been an issue at all before, the most is Gamlen remarking 'I guess I know who's the girl,' which, honestly, seems more a statement about Gamlen than his view of non-heterosexuality, and then SUDDENLY it's this big deal. And of course, with him as the lead writer, and with him saying 'it's a personal story to me,' no one really was in a position to argue with him, but he put a story he wanted to tell into a universe that it didn't fit.
And now the future games ARE going to have to deal with this. If we are going to Tevinter, either we're going to have to retread it in some fashion, since it's apparently a Big Deal in Tevinter, so it will have some kind of effect on us, particularly given that so far, every game has had us getting involved in matter that drag us into the circles of the local major powers and their leadership, which will mean we'll be dealing with the Magisterium, the same element of Tevinter who have this way of thinking, or they're going to have to ignore it, at which point it guts the emotional core of Dorian's story by making it 'actually not that much of a thing.' There's not really a middle ground here. The only thing I can think that might could as striking a balance is in having Dorian's Lucerni faction manage to make some forward momentum on this, which, honestly, doesn't strike me as something that could possibly be done in any kind of period of less than ten years, AT BEST, and that's with support that from all indications isn't there in the first place.
Like, I know that even if we're in Tevinter, that doesn't mean that we're going to actually have an all Tevinter party, but it's going to have an effect on things. It's going to be an elephant in the room the whole time, and ignoring it draws attention to the woolly mammoth standing next to it.
I think in order to make Tevinter open to gays, we need to throw a gay parade. Since they want to go hardcore gay issues with DA, let's go all out, give Cullen a boa, Iron Bull dresses in leather pants, and Dorian in a short jean pants.
If they really want to promote gay characters, the first step would be to write them without stereotypes. They can't go forward when they already got the fundamental step wrong to be honest. It's not a coincidence that characters like Cullen, Kaidan, and Alistair are straight while characters like Zevran and Iron Bull are bi. Sexually active characters may just be straight, just because they like sex doesn't mean every hole is a hole for them.

I'm so glad Gaider is gone.
Not gonna miss him or his banal writing one bit.
What about Anders - who is from Anders... But I suppose he doesn't really count, does he? After all, he was pretty much brought up in Ferelden after all..
He was born and raised in Ferelden, so he doesn't really count. Also, he is bi. It's not like a gay warrior from Anderfels would be a rehash of what we already had.

Yeah I'm really nervous as to what the m/m LIs will be like in DA4. It all depends on who the characters' writer will be, but I don't have lots of hope after Tevinter has been set up as the only nation in the setting that has issues with homosexuals. And with Weekes' treatment of IB and Krem, being very heavy handed and writing as a straight ally rather than from a gay man's perspective as Gaider, it doesn't provide me reassurance.
Best case scenario, either Lukas or a new writer works on the m/m romances. Sera was not my favorite character, but I liked the depiction of her sexuality being part of her, not hidden like Josephine, but not being her defining characteristic.
I'm so glad Gaider is gone.

I think he brought a lot of good things to the setting, but I also think he was getting burnt out and it's good that he moved onto other projects. Some of the narrative flaws I take issue with in DAI could stem from this, though of course he isn't solely to blame.
It's funny, because he wrote Cassandra and Dorian; Cassandra is my favorite DAI character, after being lukewarm to her in DA2 and afraid of her cliche portrayal in that anime, but Dorian falls pretty flat to me. He just doesn't seem like an individual, he's a walking platform discussing Tevinter, gay issues, and being sassy. I'm generalizing, but from these boards it seems like a big portion of his fanbase are women who like him being their gay BFF or enjoy roleplaying as gay men. Not a bad thing, but I'm selfish and would prefer a gay LI suited to me, a gay man, rather than appealing mostly to women.
I would be really curious to know the make up of all of the players who really like Dorian vs. those who are lukewarm or neutral.
