I'm generalizing, but from these boards it seems like a big portion of his fanbase are women who like him being their gay BFF or enjoy roleplaying as gay men. Not a bad thing, but I'm selfish and would prefer a gay LI suited to me, a gay man, rather than appealing mostly to women.

 

I would be really curious to know the make up of all of the players who really like Dorian vs. those who are lukewarm or neutral.

Truly. I mean, if I read IB x Dorian fanfiction, it always has a female Inquisitor kinda rooting them and being Dorian's moral support and best friend forever, tears hugs kisses mmmm I love my sassy gay BFF!!!11 ALWAYS! I've even seen fanfiction of Dorian's and female Inquisitor's relationship and how good and deep and amazing it is. I've seen people write on DA confession tumblrs how important Dorian's friendship is to them and their female Inq. Deviantart art comment sections are sometimes ripe with '' OMG DORIAN IS THE BEST GAY BFF EVER, everyone should have a gay BFF XD. '' In reddit thread where the thread asks '' who in the DA universe would you date in real life '' the amount of '' Dorian if he swung my way or if i was a gay dude :'( '' is staggering.

 

If I see a Dorian Pavus tumblr, you can bet the blog is ran by a female, or a they/them xe/xir creature. 

 

Surely I am dramatizing this a bit but it's a bit annoying to me. And I think most of this could've been avoided if Dorian didn't became the BFF of the inquisitor.

I am just hoping that the deep and meaningful bond between Dorian and the Inq has some kind of role in the next game, since they went out of their way to put Dorian in such a position. Otherwise I'll just yell out '' yeah u were just scared of the backlash female players would've given if they weren't able to **** or become best friends with the only gay character in the game!! ''

 

But I'll shut up about this topic since people tend to be victimized when this is brought up.

Wow, I'm a bit surprised by the consensus in this thread lately.  To me, I don't think that the Tevinter views on homosexuality were either out of place or too emphasized.  I think that it makes perfect sense.  That being said, I'm also not concerned about how it's going to be portrayed in DA4.  The only situation where it would be an issue would be if we were a mage from a noble house.  And I doubt that they'll go that way because it would require a human mage character to have a completely different background than the other characters.  Unless they go the Hawke route and just give a human mage family background, which I hope they don't.  If they give us any other background, then it won't matter because gay relationships in Tevinter are only looked down upon when they prevent a noble house from gaining the prestige necessary through a heterosexual marriage producing children. 

 

Also, I agree that there's a solid chance that some of our companions aren't even going to be Imperials.  For all we know, the gay characters might be from Nevarra and Seheron or the Anderfels and Rivain.  And, if they are anything other than a noble Imperial, their sexuality shouldn't play a role.  Until we start seeing some characters, I'm not going to worry.  The series has really made some nice strides in representation and, while it's not perfect still, the trajectory doesn't make nervous.

Yeah, I think it's a bit too early to be going into panic mode. The gay companion will almost certainly be from somewhere else than Tevinter (two gay mage Tevinters, one after another? BW would not do that). And the protagonist will probably not be from Tevinter either - think about it, the class and race would dramatically change the social standing of that character. That would take too much resources to accommodate. As I said, a gay Ander, or Nevarran is far more likely to happen. This way - no one cares about gay lovers, since neither of them is expected to have children.

Tevinter templars have less struggles, since they don't take lyrium. They are really just stinking normal warriors there. Which is good, I don't want another Cullen sob story.

Probably one companion will be from Tevinter, but there are a lot of options beyond magister, so we'll have to wait and see.

Even if you are not a noble, being a mage in Tevinter already changes your situation a lot. Again, I think that would cost too much.

Yeah I'm really nervous as to what the m/m LIs will be like in DA4. It all depends on who the characters' writer will be, but I don't have lots of hope after Tevinter has been set up as the only nation in the setting that has issues with homosexuals. And with Weekes' treatment of IB and Krem, being very heavy handed and writing as a straight ally rather than from a gay man's perspective as Gaider, it doesn't provide me reassurance.

 

Best case scenario, either Lukas or a new writer works on the m/m romances. Sera was not my favorite character, but I liked the depiction of her sexuality being part of her, not hidden like Josephine, but not being her defining characteristic.

 

Kristjanson seems to have issues with writing women in general - he's one of the writers of Paragon of Her Kind, and Branka, Sera's big problem is how her writing basically treats her as 'one of the guys, just with boobs,' because you'll hear a lot of dialogue from her that sounds basically like what they are, a straight guy writing a lesbian, so expecting that what he's interested in when it comes to women is what women attracted to women would be interested in, and he also wrote Aveline, who, even if it is friendly banter, gave her a lot of ****-shaming dialogue towards Isabela.

 

My concern with Weekes is less about the handling of Bull and Krem, although yeah, I get where that comes from, and more just the general BioWare attitude towards same-sex relationships outside of the PC-companions period. Like every non-PC romance that have involved two women has been abusive - we have Marjolaine/Leliana, and the fallout from that, from Marjolaine's betrayal, is Leliana's main quest in DAO, there's Branka/Hespith, which is horrifying, and there's Celene/Briala, where Celene is abusive towards Briala, willing to sacrifice her in the name of the Game, to the point that she entered a relationship with Briala while knowing that she killed Briala's parents. And it's implied that reuniting them, returning Briala to her abuser, is somehow a GOOD ending. Granted, the men seem to fare better, in not being outright abusive and horrible, but they tend to be used for comedy - Herren and Wade, for example, or the bickering couple who can be overheard at the Winter Palace. Bull and Dorian evade that, but you still see so many claims of it being abusive because we only get snippets of it, and I can easily see how those snippets can appear abusive.

 

Honestly, I'd sooner hope for a new writer, hopefully a gay person, getting involved in the writing. I'd sooner see what someone new can offer, rather than just seeing the old writers who seem very reluctant to let go of these older styles of character usages and portrayals, even as times change and they stop being groundbreaking and just start being a rehash of the same old tired narrative use.

I'm not too familiar with Samson as a character, and whatever he was in DAI left me a bit cold on the character front, but his looks are definitely up my alley.

I enjoy men who aren't perfect beauties. I prefer men who look a bit quirky to men who are Cullen *cough*

I think he brought a lot of good things to the setting, but I also think he was getting burnt out and it's good that he moved onto other projects. Some of the narrative flaws I take issue with in DAI could stem from this, though of course he isn't solely to blame.

 

It's funny, because he wrote Cassandra and Dorian; Cassandra is my favorite DAI character, after being lukewarm to her in DA2 and afraid of her cliche portrayal in that anime, but Dorian falls pretty flat to me. He just doesn't seem like an individual, he's a walking platform discussing Tevinter, gay issues, and being sassy. Oh, yeah, I forgot about Cass! I'm not sure then, she's so fantastic compared to his MagexTemplars stuff and Dorian. Maybe it was just time for him to move on for greener pastures.

They could use it as a way to incorporate the crystal, since he gives it to a friend as well. Of course, he won't give it to a non-friend, or an Inquisitor that didn't recruit him or kicked him out, so I dunno, really. Even though the possibility of those other two is probably low-ish among all players** (just as the possibility of a dead Leliana was likely low), they'll have to come up with some other option if the Inquisitor is meant to be used in some capacity.

 

As nice as the crystal thing is, it really seemed as a forced device to connect the Inquisitor with a Tevinter-bound Dorian for the next game.

I think Dorian is in Trespasser even if he's kicked out, not recruited in the base game, or not on a positive footing with the PC.

Hmm I hadn't realized. I hadn't played Trespasser with low approvals in companions. For the reasons you've stated above.

 

My assumption is that if Dorian didn't give Inquisitor the crystal, it will be hand waved by Dorian giving a crystal to Harding/Leliana/Cassandra instead, and operations will resume the same as if the Inquisitor had the crystal.

I hope the Inquisitor has only a tiny cameo. I had problems already with Hawke and some of his dialogue, felt really out of character. Since DAI didn't have the clear cut tones like 2 did, it would be even harder to bring the Inquisitor back and allow for the variety of attitudes.
