I wouldn't like confirmed straight characters being turned not straight either - but I still don't think it's the same as turning confirmed gay characters bisexual, for the reasons I've already stated.

The thing you seem to be missing here is that Kaidan never said he was straight. He never said that he was only interested in women. He just wasn't available for romance in male Shepard in ME1. I don't think it's unreasonable that a bisexual man takes longer to realize attraction to or make moves on other men, or anything else like that.
You mean ignoring the times after ME1 when Bioware referred to Kaidan as straight? Earlier it was agreed Word of God counts.
Then again, it isn't the first time Bioware retconned character's sexualities to be more LGBT-friendly.
