Nah I think the Carol Corps is what saved Captain Marvel. The writer and Marvel's executives have explicitly said that--which is cool--but it comes with this implication that if we want non white dude stories to succeed, we have to recreate the lightning in a bottle that was Carol's book coinciding with a growing female readership in comics.

This is really OT tho, since Carol is straight....but worth noting, I don't think Marvel has any solo books led by lesbian or gay characters, do they? Deadpool is pan sexual, and I'm sure there is at least one more bisexual, but I can't think of any leading characters right now. Often they are side characters, or buffered by a team. Which isn't too far away from how Bioware does things, and they don't have the budgetary easy Marvel does. So I do think that in some ways, Bioware is braver about it.

Arikiho has a solo book back in the day, and he's bisexual. Loki has an ongoing as well and he's also bisexual.
DC has more LGBT lead books. In the past, they had Midnighter solo, and batwoman's solo series ongoing right now, she's a lesbian. Earth-2 is not a solo book but the leader Alan Scott is gay.

John Constantine is bi as well, but people always forget this detail during adaptation.

One of many reasons why he's one of my faves. Speaking of groups that have issues with their portrayals in media and masculinity - bi guys are pretty up there.

Was Batwoman the book where the writer walked out because they wouldn't let him have Kate marry her girlfriend?

Yep. Because DC doesn't want any of their heroes to be married

Yuuup. I stopped reading it then.

DC seems like on a upswing now, so maybe they'll reverse that?

It's, imo, ok that they didn't want any of their superheroes to get married. I mean its' dumb and has awful implications etc but that as an inherent reason for Kate to not get married it is better than many others, since they were consistent about it across all their couples, het or otherwise.

But it's very obnoxious that they had the proposal scene---which was HUGE, and let even the writer think that he was going to get to write the wedding, before they finally decided "oh wait we have that no weddings rule" was a problem. Editorial over there was a mess, that was when they were hemorrhaging writers because it was awful everywhere.

I prefered Rucka's writing, but JHW3 made that book's aesthetic and he seemed to "get" Kate, even though he didn't use Renee. :( (I don't think he was allowed to, though. I'm pretty sure he would have if he coudl) . His art is so fabulous. Sad to see him gone, but i respect him a lot for walking.

Not the kind of comics most of you are talking about but theres this lovely little web comic I read with a nice mostly LBGTQ cast in it, though the closest I can seem to find to a KISA is maybe an older character named WOC though she reads more 'wise old soul' to me and I'm not 100% sure if she is gay or bi since they still haven't revealed a lot of her past with her old lover yet.

Found a fairly good strip of her sorry for the size, again Woc is on the right.

Sometimes I forget that the people that post here and over in the Female Inq thread are not entirely representative of the people who post on BSN as a whole. Which is kind of funny considering I'm the one who made the "40% LGBT companions does not mean 40% LGBT population" argument earlier.

So thanks to everyone for being you guys. It's pretty cool.

I don't get it. It's hard to detect sarcasm on the Internet so not sure if it's negative or positive. :P

Meh, I don't think it's a stretch. After all, we tend to stick together! I think it's a lot less believable when you see a group of friends in media that has only one LGBT+ person and the rest of the friends are all straight. *laughs* In my experience it's a lot more likely to have a token straight person in a group of LGBT friends than vice versa. :)

Can you define what you mean by " pandering?"

Like, to me, the most hilarious thing about DA2's complaints were all the "ugh, 4 bisexuals in one friend group??" and I was like "...sounds legit???" lmfao. It's really not unbelievable.

The reason it seems unbelievable to some people is that's not the kind of story people are used to. I have seen bisexuals say that it's not realistic for a story, while standing next to their bisexual friends, and when I pointed that out, they were like ".....oh." It's strange. If you have more than one gay man, or more than one black woman, or whatever, people will accuse it of being unrealistic (or pandering) even if they have more than one black woman or gay person in their lives. It's just not what they're used to, and people aren't very reflective about change.

It's your story. People can call it pandering all they want, but that's the most useless criticism ever, because it tells me nothing about the story and pretends to know the authors intent.

. I mean, write what you want, but know those kind of criticisms are not the kind you can control really...because it's not about your flaws as a writer, but about how society reacts when confronted with something outside the "default."

I've still yet to see a good reason why 4 bisexuals in the same team is called out for being unrealistic but dragons and magic are not.
