I've still yet to see a good reason why 4 bisexuals in the same team is called out for being unrealistic but dragons and magic are not.

 

Dammit, out of likes. But yeah. This. Isn't it funny how a bunch of queer people in one place is too much for some people to suspend their disbelief over even though (unlike dragons and magic) it's something that can actually happen in Real Life? 

 

Come on, people! We want to get lost in the fantasy just as much as anyone else! For some of us, that includes being surrounded by like-minded non-straight characters and being the LGBT hero of the story.

 

And, to keep it on topic, some of us would like that fantasy to include saving the world and getting the (non-straight) prince/princess/knight!

I agree with you on everything except for the fact that I'm unenthusiastic about LIs who aren't mages, hence my not pushing for a knight very hard. Moral paragons are always nice, though.

I would also be totally cool with a royal LI who was a mage with a knightly manner. I'm not at devoted to the idea of a Knight in Shining Armor type being a warrior as some are, but I'd be fine with it either way. I'm just ready for a gay/bi LI without a tragic past and a promiscuous personality.

Merrill from DA and Liara, Kaidan and Samantha from ME are all there, if that helps.

ME has different problems with f/f than DA, so it's not as good of a comparison there.

Merrill would be a good example, except her story is her getting crapped on the entire time and you can't even really do that much to support her, so it never felt satisfying to me. I love her but her narrative was all about lack of agency and being dismissed by people, which is a little Too Real and not as enjoyable from a f/f perspective. Just my opinion though.

I did have issues with her arc, I admit. Luckily, her author isn't writing any romance options this time around, so we'll be able to see what Lukas and Josephine's author have in store...

I'm starting to think that I love Merrill in spite of the way her arc went, not because of it. I certainly don't consider it a terribly impressive piece of writing.

Yeah I don't remember who wrote Merrill, but I mostly blame the rushed third act for her arc. More fleshing out of that storyline would have made it so much better. Of all the companions, she suffers the most from it, I think, because her arc is pretty complex.

I'm sure it does help other people. Personally, I can only bring myself to play a female character very very rarely, so the female LIs aren't for me (though I absolutely support their presence for people who want to play f/f).

 

Kaiden is from ME, and as much as I like sci-fi, I prefer fantasy (and also don't really want to play through two whole games before I even get to play out Kaiden's romance). I think most of the people here want to see a literal knight in shining armor (that is, as a specifically fantasy genre trope) rather than just a figurative KISA, if that makes sense.

Well... Dorian is almost that, just a mage instead of a warrior. But he fits the trope pretty well, otherwise.

IMO, Dorian's outcast status puts him out of the Knight in Shining Armor archetype.

Yup. Plus he looks like he deflects a lot with humor (at least during the redcliffe scenario), which isn't a bad thing, but not part of the paragon of virtue and standing for the righteous bit. I have no doubt he'll be wonderful and knightly in his own way, but he doesn't really seem to fit the trope that much.

Well... Dorian is almost that, just a mage instead of a warrior. But he fits the trope pretty well, otherwise.

 

I think it's way to early to say that about Dorian.  We just don't know enough about him.  I'd say, from the little that we know, he seems like a good-intentioned guy, but might fall into the dashing, sarcastic Robin Hood type more than the KISA type.

Doesn't mean a KISA can't deflect with humor. I would even welcome a KISA that uses humor sometimes.

Yes, but he seems to have a threshold and he certainly doesn't joke about the grey wardens, for example. We don't know enough to know where Dorian falls on that yet. He might be more like that, which would be great. Theres a difference between deflecting due to moral ambivalence and due to emotional immaturity. Both are flaws, but one is more KISAy. Zevran deflects too, after all.

The context of the culture he's outcast from doesn't matter, in my opinion. He's still an outcast. I want a queer character that doesn't have inherent "otherness" to him or her.
