How do people feel about asexual romance? I wouldn't mind if they're extra options or one of the straight romances simply because LGBT only have 1-2 romance, and I would prefer for them to be a sexual one. I can't imagine myself being with an asexual person nor can my character.

 

I don't know about an LI who is ace, might get a looot of hate, Sebastian seems to get hate for the no sex thing, but I'd love it if our character could be one, and still have a relationship.

In DAO you could turn down sex and still continue the romance. In DA2... Not so much.

I mean, yeah there were never any "why do we never have sex"-conversations that would presumably happen in a relationship where one is ace and the other is sexual and might not know their partner is ace, but I can imagine that happening later in the relationship. After the world-ending disaster is over, and there's time for talks like that. Not that we'd get to see it probably.

I would want to know beforehand, so that I could pick someone else. Subject to that, I don't care, because a partner who is asexual will have no effect on my enjoyment of the game. (Because they will have no effect on my playthrough, at least not as an LI.)

I've tend to default to "queer" as an umbrella term that encompasses all sexual and gender identities that aren't heterosexual and cisgendered. However, that said, I know there are people who find this offensive, so I'll simply use QUILTBAG as my other umbrella word. It's real hazy and I wish there was a universally agreed upon word that would encompass all marginalised sexual orientations and gender identities.

 

Anyway, we're going way off topic here.

 

I have recently been introduced to MOGAI - Marginalized Orientations, Gender identities, and Intersex.  I've seen people use the acronym around the internet, but only recently saw an explanation of what it means.  It seems much more inclusive and simpler than LGBTQQIAP+, and doesn't have the stigma that some people still feel is attached to "queer."

From what I understand (honestly, I've never been interested in finding out for myself), the Sebastian romance had other issues, like how he'd get mad if you even flirted with anybody else ever.  To me it seems less about the sex and more about "I am strictly about this chaste lifestyle and you must conform to it if we are to have a relationship."

 

Whereas there are lots of ways to do an asexual romance that would feel natural and like the PC is not being forced into something they would not choose for themselves.  If the romance arc itself is satisfying, the lack of sex scene shouldn't even be that noticable.  Having a cute cuddling scene in place of a sex scene would be just as satisfying for most people, I think.

Its a concept that needs a linguistic update, so it will get one...but the getting there is messy and confusing.

Oh, I just went looking, and I think I see what you're talking about.  I guess the issue is that "marginalized" can encompass any form of marginalized sex, such as sex workers or kink, which have nothing to do with LGBT.  Though I thought the "orientations and gender identities" part would clarify that (kink is certainly neither), but I won't use it if people have issues with it.

That's the least of it. I think the forum would explode in such a furor of transphobia that any possible benefit from representation will be lost in the frothing-at-the-mouth lunacy we'd see. It would be horrible. But perhaps I have too pessimistic a view of people. Still, I think in particular a straight trans female LI would be something video game culture is absolutely not capable of handling without sheer insanity at this point in time.
