Hey guys, was discussing this over at /r/Dragonage and I had this idea. We know that human/dwarf parings are super rare, given the dwarves population crisis its seen as a betrayal of the race in addition to the dwarven reduced fertility due to the taint and the reduced fertility of an mix species pair.
If a couple overcomes these obstacles and a child is born, it is a half-dwarf. David Gaider described them as a "tall dwarf or a short human".
So this incredibly rare pairing has an incredibly rare child. Assuming that they carried over part of the Dwarven resistance to magic and some of their inability to go to the fade this would result in these Half-Dwarf mages being Tranquil, or close to tranquil given a not total separation from the fade.
To me this would explain a lot of Sandal, why he looks like a dwarf but can seemingly do magic, why he appears to be mentally stunted and why he is so good at Enchantment. Thoughts?

It what been suggested that he is in fact half-elf as elves have a more natural affinity for magic.

There's some ambient dialogue from the Carta dwarves at the start of Legacy that seem to indicate that Sandal is an Aeducan bastard by an elf or a human.

almost certainly, he and bodhan have been part of both games so I wouldn't be surprised that they show up in inquistion.

With it being such a taboo, that would make sense why he was abandoned in the Deep Roads where Bodhan found him. As for him surviving down there until then, he has shown rather well that he can defend himself just fine, haha.

That doesn't make any sense. He would still be a full dwarf and thus unable to do magic.

Sandal doesn't do magic. He does Enchantment! and rarely, Not Enchantment!
He is gifted with manipulating lyrium, which is what was around him when he killed those darkspawn, but one doesn't need to be a mage to manipulate lyrium, but being a dwarf helps prevent getting a bit addled or loopy.
