It was suggested in another forum that we start up a discussion of doing something similar to the NWN Custom Content Challenge, so I thought I'd toss the ball out here and see where it rolls. This is a regular project that challenges modders to create content based on a particular theme. The theme can be anything that can be inserted into the game, from the fantastic to the mundane. Here are some past examples from the NWN effort.

Since the content is intended to challenge modders, it is not supposed to be a port of an existing model--instead it is something new. Typically the content is a new creature, item, or placeable, but it can also be a script, a visual effect, a prefab, new tile variants, or some other component that can be plugged into a game. Anybody can participate at any skill level.

What do you think of the idea?

as already stated, i would like the idea. would it be helpful to collect the data of the stickied threads and combine them into something like your toolset guide as a quick reference? this could be linked in the threads.

You mean like a NWN2 Modding Guide? It's a good idea, but that's probably an entire project onto itself.

I would suggest starting with the nwn1 monthly themes, whatever the first theme they did would be our first theme. At least until the nwn2 challenge gets some traction, assuming it does. My contributions would probably be vfx, npcs, items or similar. Given the time required for making new placeables and creatures, I would suggest reskinning appropriate to the theme be allowed.

The first challenge was "High Priestess/Cleric Apartment", from August 2010. It's a nice set--I've ported a few of those models over to NWN2. Given the restrictions on animation in NWN2, including re-skinned creatures seems to make sense. At least to me.

I think ports should be allowed.  I think it would encourage more participation.

I think we'd have to at least insist that the original have a reasonably restriction-free license. I.e., no commercial content and no personal use only licenses. That way we can make sure that everybody can use it in their modules.

Yes, I think so too.

Done.

I was doing this as a cheap ass way to make a quick model and try to work out the issues I was having.

I was able to make much greater use of blender for high details this time :

As you can see here my model would have been pretty plain had I gone the cheapest route I had planned.

Kind of wondering how I set the tint map to neutral (no change)... the eyes seem to tint still slightly even though I want them white.

Also wondering if anyone can suggest a better base colour for which to tint... the tint seems to only overlay a very dark body.

I don't know if these will make a very scary enemy or not or even a feasible one.

Did you paint the eye area in full black? All black spots remain untinted.

Some possibilities for a high priestess apartment:

  • Religious symbols as decor
  • An elaborate four-poster bed
  • Incense burner stand
  • Deity statues (decor)
  • Scrying font
  • Heavy drapes
  • Divan
  • Private altar
  • Elaborate reliquary case
  • Religious robe variants and religious caps
  • Ritual staff

We've already got some religious stained glass placeables and I think there are religious banners around somewhere. Some prefab holy chambers could be good though.

I could separate out the holy symbol of Sune I made for BDoCC, which is in the form of a sign to be used as decor.

To add to the list, also think of items that would be used by a drow high priestess, such as ritual daggers, revealing spiderweb clothing, etc.

"I think there are religious banners around somewhere. "

Tropetyper did a full set of banners. Need naming to their deity though.

Other thoughts for the priest apartments might be:

Secret door/trapdoor or hidey hole.

Book stand

Dis-guarded robes.

One of those mobile wall thingies to change behind.

With a little imagination we have all of these though.

I think a challenge would be fun.

I took a look in Faiths and Pantheons for more details of items used by drow high priestesses.  A ritual dagger for any drow priestess is described as "a spider-shaped knife whose eight descending legs are blades".  Also involved in their rituals are things like sacred oils to be burnt (could be represented by a nice-looking bottle), incense as Bob mentioned earlier, and a black altar with a bowl-shaped depression for burning items in.  They also burn items in braziers (8 of them for important rituals) producing black and red flames.

Their furniture and statuary are made of marble and obsidian, braziers are carved with spider shapes, and their high level priestess ritual clothing is either full nudity or black robes with dark red or purple trim.  Lesser clerics instead wear dark purple or red robes with black trim.  Jewelry is made of platinum, mostly medallions, and clerics wear Lolth's holy symbol embossed in black enamel or platinum, on a platinum or mithral chain.

I was going to hang around just to see how well you guys were doing, but from this initial enthusiasm I can see I don't need to. Here is one little thought. In the NwN version of this pre-fabs (areas and scripts that do something (like this addendum I made for last month's ccc)) are allowed. This helps to boost the number of submissions and allows people from those disciplines to not feel left out. It also gives creators of custom content who may not be able to think of anything to build for that month, to have something to contribute.

But whatever. It's your challenge. Do it your own way and above all have fun - that at least is the primary objective of the NwN ccc.

Best of luck with this.

Okay, well I thought perhaps you had intended to post to the content creation offers thread. The challenge part of CCC is about creating content for a particular theme, and, in the process, hopefully getting ourselves a little out of our personal comfort zone. Thanks. :)

Why is this contest even necessary? Because NWN did it and we should follow? This forum has exploded recently with more new content than the first 7 years of NWN2 history combined. We established pretty well that we need someone to actually make modules to show this content. That's a contest we should be seeing. I think the contest if any should correct the current state of things not beat a dead horse (or in this case inject an already rowdy horse with more horse stimulants).

The cornucopia could be the size of China but if no one is around to put it in a module did it really make a sound??

The people who make custom content aren't necessarily the same people who make modules, so the two goals aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.  Ideally, the custom content would aid module makers by providing more resources for them to make modules that otherwise they could not have, or break through bottlenecks caused by dissatisfaction in trying to get the available content to substitute for what they really want to include.

It was suggested that actually making modules should be a separate challenge.

I look at it this way: I can go grab something that fits that theme from something I've already made or needed for a module I was working on, such as an area or a prefab item grouping (I find those super handy for building), that means it would take me minimal time. If the theme is going to be high priest/priestess apartment, which was the first nwn1 challenge theme, that's pretty generic as lots of modules have good/neutral/evil temples and such. If I didn't have anything already or need to make something in the theme, I could make something small or just not make anything if I wasn't interested in making anything for the theme. Some of the nwn1 contests were pretty sparse in contributions, and some had people contributing small things like a custom magic item or two that was just a regular magic item with some stock properties, but had a name and background story given to it that was theme relevant. I've seen custom items, loadscreens, simple vfx etc in the "small contribution" category, not all contributions need to be as much work as new placeables/creatures/tilesets etc.

If this is going to be like the nwn1 challenges, then content should be submitted to a single person for posting in a challenge entry (I nominate rjshae since he started this thread). That person then writes it up and indicates who did what on the entry. If it's going to be a monthly challenge like nwn1, then this first one should go through November.

It's not a contest. If you don't want to do it, don't do it. There's no winner in this challenge; you only gain whatever satisfaction you get out of it.

Because NWN did it and we should follow?

As a model for engaging modding activities, it's been pretty effective with the NWN community. I don't think we are that much different. Doing this may encourage others who may not otherwise be interested in adding to the content. If it doesn't work out, then it doesn't work out. Whatever.

The cornucopia could be the size of China but if no one is around to put it in a module did it really make a sound??

Seriously? :P

Perhaps an encounter challenge? Decide upon a common terrain and class level, then build a small area and prepare an encounter...
