If the romances were up to you to decide, how would you do things differently?

I gave a snarky but not entirely inaccurate response earlier, but do you know what i would actually do if I was designing a romance system?

Bring back the Dominant Tone system and gate romances purely by personality.

To me, it feels like a far more natural way of gating romance than arbitrary restrictions of race or sex that have no place in a world that hasn't evolved according to the same institutions and discourses as our own, yet bizarrely adheres to them solely for the purposes of audience relation.

For me, and this is breaking OP's rules but YOLO:

(1) CULLEN would be a male- and female- romance. Why? In the past few games, the "matinee idol"-type character of Bioware games has always been heterosexual. Alistair. Sebastian. And now Cullen. The most attractive companion/companion-type thingies are straight. That's horrible. Yes, we could romance Zevu. Yes, we had Fen-Fen and Anders. But, let's be honest, the gays wanted Alistair and Sebastian. We could argue Daddy Alenko in ME1 was exclusively straight (but the pay-off of the male romance with him in ME3 was beautiful. Unfortunately that meant my maleShep had to be celibate for ME1 and ME2). But, yes, for a full gender rights-type thing, I think the next matinee idol character should be gay or bi.

(2) COLE will be romanceable. There's something about Cole that you just want to hug and tell him everything will be alright. He's very cuddly! I have this thing about broken men.

(3) CAMERON LEE. Oh yes please. I wonder if he is gender- or race- locked. But if someone could give him my number at the Bioware studios, I would literally (but yes not really literally) die.

As I have not experienced any of them, based solely on what little info I have:

* Remove Strong Language
* Remove Nudity
* Remove Sexual Content
* Remove Intense Violence & Blood if those apply, but doubt it.

Romance is not even secondary for me. It is more of a nice bonus not seen in older titles, but I am of the thought that one should marry their best friend, and prefer Fade to Black mechanics and imagination over simulated sexual imagery. IMO, of course.

The only thing I would change would be to make Varric and Vivienne romanceable. I have no preference to their orientation, though if Varric was bi... well, Dorian would no longer be a shoo-in for my first playthrough.

Let's preface this by saying that I'm similar to Isabela, except that instead of just big "boats", I pretty much like all of them.

So I'd keep everyone the same, but every LI would include cinematics with Miranda/Kaidan-style rear shots from time to time. They would also banter with the inquisitor about the well-formed thighs of other NPCs. There would be no toplessness to worry about during hanky-panky, because the camera would be too busy staying behind (and slightly below) both participants.

In short, it's a very good thing I'm not in charge of the LIs. :D

Alistair, absolutely, but Sebastian couldn't get it even if we were the last two men on earth. Hate that guy.

The undertone of the developer's comments seem to indicate that they, like many people in the modern era, believe sexual orientation is inherent to a person and not the product of their upbringing or society. Some people find the idea that they can be "taught" their sexuality to be highly offensive.

Just fyi.

First off, I'm relatively satisfied with Bioware's romanceable character decisions, there's something for everyone for the most part. Unfortunately we still don't have a dwarf romance!

As my first play through Warden was the former Lady Aeducan (who ended up romancing Leliana), I was likewise disappointed by another game with no dwarf romances.

I would keep it mostly how it is but I would add Scout Harding and Viviane to the mix. Scout Harding would be for either men or women but just dwarves. Don't care about the sexual orintation of vivi just that she would be a romance option.

Scout Harding (especially after her delightful presence in today's stream) would have been a fantastic addition to the romances as a bisexual character. Your companions consist of the brute force, the magics and some zany rogue action, but lack is a sneaky, yet gorgeous assassin (a la Leliana) - a position perfectly fit for Harding.

Only if the dwarf is as good a character as Sigrun or Varric.  I couldn't stand an Orzammar-mentality dwarf.

I have to agree - but only partially. I never played Awakening, but thanks to the wiki I more or less understand her character. A character like her or Varric (without it actually being Varric as he has Bianca and the memory of the original Bianca), would have been an ideal dwarven romance option (potentially, as stated above Scout Harding could have filled this role). However, I would have been just as okay with a dwarf from Orzammar who now leads a different life - be it a smuggler, merchant or what have you, someone akin to Ohgren (though hopefully not as heavy a drinker). This character would have been born and raised in Orzammar, but became a surface dwarf at some point (again, Harding may fit this characterization as well).

It would also be kind of interesting if the world state that is used had Bhelen as king, and the potential dwarf romance was either Harrowmont's nephew (who you may/may not have saved in DA2 from Bhelen's Carta assassins) or one of his guards. In the case that Harrowmont is king, his nephew could still have been an option as he ended up disagreeing with the king and left to find more promising ventures, or simply a Casteless dwarf wanting a better life than Harrowmont's strict-class Orzammar.

Spoiler

You know, I've been wondering for a while if Harding is the NPC "semi" romance BioWare told us about  :P

One can only hope!

Honestly, I just don't know enough about the characters to really judge this kind of thing properly, but there are two things at first glance I would like to change but again might not once I know the characters better.

1)  I know you said to not change sexuality, but Serah is the cutest female character in the game so far, out of the companions/advisors at least, and I prefer playing as male characters usually so having her as an option would have been nice.

Ofc maybe that just fits her personality or something, I don't know enough about her, and like I did in DA:2 I might just play through again as a female and like her better then my male, so we'll see (ofc though the male Qunari look badass as heck, so doubt I'll switch anytime soon lol)

2)  Having the Iron Bull romancable by literally anyone seems like utter and pure fan service to me.  Some big brutish and comical Qunari warrior can be romanced by any race of any sex?  Seems like an incredible reach lore wise to me, but ONCE AGAIN maybe that's just his character and it might fit him well as it did Zevran in DA:O, I simply do not know enough about him to say for sure.

Other then that I have no issues at all with the romancable characters.  Originally I was surprised Varric wasn't a romance option just cause of how popular he is, but no one can beat Bianca in Varric's eyes, so it makes sense to me lol

Since this is a wish list-screw the "rules". I would have made both Blackwall and Solas bisexual, or at least Blackwall

I wouldn't have Solas and Cullen romanceable (sorry), just as a matter of opportunity cost.  2/2/2 gives everyone choice.  Honestly, I don't really romance too much, so I wouldn't be complaining if we didn't have them at all.

What I would do ?

I would have more racial variety for the straight male romance.

Out of all the Dragon Age games so far, almost all the straight male romance, with the exception of Merrill and human women. Straight females have humans, elves and Qunari males as options.

It is getting stale and dull at this point.

It is as if Bioware devs have something against the idea of having women of other races be straight male romance options.

Most likely what I would do is make Scout Harding romanceable for straight males in order to add more variety.

My changes:

 - Cassandra is available to both genders

 - Cullen is available to both genders

 - Add Varric, available to dwarf females

 - Add Vivienne, available to males

Everything else would stay the same.

Leliana to be romancable if players do not create a DA World where she romanced the Warden.

Sera romancable to both genders.

Vivienne romancable to male characters.

The only things I would change is I would make Varric a LI "female dwarf only" and Scout Harding a LI, Bi and "not race gated".

We need some dwarf love!

I would add in Vivienne. Not enough chicks to receive my Inquisitor's Inq right now.

Also add in Flemeth and Morrigan but only as a package.

I would only add Leliana to the list .... they could´ve come with some interesting soul healing for Leliana if she lost the warden.

I'd just like some variety in general. Straight males get a grand total of one party member (who looks nothing like her DA2 counterpart) and an NPC? Thanks awfully, Bioware.
