It's been a difficult ten years?

There's also the possibility that Justinia is dead, and at the hands of who/whatever the Venatori are working for. Justinia is basically Leliana's saviour/mother figure. I can understand that plus being tortured would probably affect her a lot.

I find it interesting how in a way they took the Deus Ex route regarding Leliana. In DA:O you could encourage her to embrace her Bard lifestyle or dedicate herself more fully in the Chantry. So what she did was embrace the Bard lifestyle in service to the Chantry.

Leliana during DAO was confused about her role in the world, she had lived life as bard but then found the Maker and become quite devouted Andrastian. She quite obviously was struggling with her past and present there in DAO and what she should do in the future, her whole soft/hardened thing was about it. I think she has found the answer now, how to serve the Maker while being bard she enjoyed to be.

I can't see how Leliana is so much different, she has just had some good character growth.

I'm not sure about it. Leliana in DA:O was very nice and sweet and wanted a nug for a pet. Leliana in DAI has a cloak.

The best comparison I can draw is with Dr. T'Soni. Liara started off as a nice and naive companion in ME1. ME2 she started to reach out as an operative. In ME3, she was THE galaxy's Shadow Broker. A big difference, but whenever you took to her, she's still the same old sweet Dr. T'Soni you met from ME1. A galaxy bad-ass but keeping the same personality which I think is a stronger growth than Leliana's.

It's called character development. Liara went through the same process ME1-ME3.

Who cares i will chop her as she don't listen orders and i don't trust her not mention that her faith makes her obstacle on my way.

She is bard + fanatic what did you expected?

She was pleasant enough in DAO, if a bit zealous.  Just so long as that devotion doesn't get in the way of me helping the mages where I can (the ones who aren't trying to kill me of course) then her and I will get along fine.

I don't think you can really judge from this. She litteraly got tortured five minutes ago. She seemes tougher and less innocent in the rest of the gameplays as well but never a crazy amount. If I were to guess I would say that she has a greater capacity for ruthlesness now but still try to let her old values guide her.

The Op didn't ask what people thought about her. They were asking how/why she has changed? Perhaps i misinterpreted

He asked well in fact he didn't asked about anything in this thread just put picture and quote and then replied uncertainly that was about how leliana has changed.

Besides i replied on his question more specifically she was already heavily screwd up in dao even more than zevran perhaps even most of all companions competing with morri. After years in church as religious assassin we have decent portions of fanaticism plus her being as i said screwd up.That is answer.

Yeah, that's my thought as well. It isn't so much that she's now a cold-blooded murderer, but that she has only been free from the torture at the hands of one of Alexius's servants for all of five minutes. Leliana HAS a dark side. Things with her and Marjolaine showed that.

Plus when that bit comes up in the demo footage, there are a couple of other dialogue options, including one that has the Inquisitor asking her to stand down. Maybe that would work, but they were showing off things through the demo, showing a specific scenario.

When young you are naive with hopes and dreams. Focusing on the beautiful in life and wanting to change the world for the better.

When you get older naivety is replaced by cynicism. You start to see more and more of the ugly things in life, and you realize that the nature of humans doesent change. That everyone want something. Everyone lies.

Why would this inevitable change as you realize the truths of the world slowly reveal before your eyes - affect Leliana any different than other people? Leliana isnt changing for the worse - she is being shaped by the hard cold truth of the world as it is. Making her stronger and more suited for surviving in a world where being strong is more important than being kind.

I like to think that the Leliana we have at present in Inquisition is partly the result of the Warden hardening her in Origins. That's how I plan on headcannoning it anyway.

I finally killed her on purpose in a recent play through of Origins just because I'm genuinely curious to see how this will color her perception of the Warden should it come up in conversation.

^^Yep

But this one is shocking as Leliana was so... "innocent" in Origins

But she probably noticed how innocence has died with the, you know, giant hole in the sky

Isn't that guy she's killing essentially a zombie or some such anyways? I recall Dorian being somewhat shocked at what Alexius had done.
