Obviously companions quests are up there, but I wondered if we could expect to see some companions be mandatory for some main storylines. The Redcliffe castle mission showcased Dorian quite a bit and figured companions will have their own reactions to that paticular mission or if he is needed for that mission given his connection to Alexius and he was was doing something important with that strange magical portal.
Can we expect to see companions be mandatory for some quests? (DAI spoilers)

I'm unsure. There will probably be a few. I think most of the time it's a 'you may want to take X here' situation. They actually specified in the E3 footage that having Dorian there opened up options, which implied strongly that he didn't have to be present.

I think I heard that some missions don't trigger unless a certain companion is in the group? Also I think it's safe to assume that companion missions require you to actually have said companion with you to do it.
But for main quests? I don't think so, since they said you can make all but one companion leave you. So other than that companion, I'm sure you won't be forced to have others with you to continue the main story.

I dont think it is required, but it´s properly a good idea to bring certain companions to certain areas, if you want to make things more interesting.

its possible but i think its mainly for alterive routes on some quests as we saw in the storm costs quest after the inqusitor finds a piece of paper the party chats a little an we hear viv say their brutes or somthing an blackwall then suggests they can be recuirted ,they have a code which opens up a 2nd choice

Assuming that there are loyalty type quests, then I can imagine that some companions would be required for that quest.

There was that quest with Dorian's former teacher or something where it was recommended to bring Dorian along, but I don't think they said it was a requirement.
My guess is that some missions will have unique results if you bring certain companions.

I think its more of bonus dialogue in terms of content from who you bring, like maybe Dorian is best to bring for
Redcliff in terms of 'bonus' lines/content while on the stormcoast(?) beach area Blackwall is better to take along.

I think in the start of the game you will "have" to take X companions because you don't have more than three yet. Or you might have a situation like the first mission as a grey warden with alistar and the two chaps who Duncan also recruited before they, Spoiler, DIE!!!!!!
But I think beyond companion quests you wont be required to take a specific companion.

I like to see these kind of quests as replayability. Example, the quest with Alexius. If, 1st time round, I happened to NOT take Dorian with me, then i'll have whatever result I get. Then, one another playthrough, when I DO take Dorian, i'll have a nice surprise and new content to see. I mainly do this, as I always use the same 3 companions per protagonist (as in, in playthrough #1 i'll have these 3, whereas in playthrough #2 i'll take these 3 etc). I never really see it as "oh, i'll take this person because they're relevant", mainly because either; We havn't had much opportunity to do so 'logically' (outside of companion quests), or the amount of companions available to us has been pretty limited (unlike M.E:2)

usually only companion quests are mandatory.

I'm kind of hoping, that certain companions will ask to be brought along for specific quest. Therefore I can ignore their request if I feel the nudge of contradiction:)

I play exactly like that ![]()
I usually choose my companion based on what the preferences of my character would be, and I keep more or less the same group during the whole game. I like to switch them up for each playthrough so I have different party banters and reactions every time.
I doubt we'll have a lot of mandatory companions except for their own quests.
