Could we be fighting an Indoctrinated Shepard in ME4?

Well, it's been about 2 years since Mass Effect 3's release (already, wow), and the endings that had disappointed pretty much all of us still looms over our heads like a black cloud. Even to a point to where we've, as a community, created a theory that suggests that the whole thing was a dream. However, with Mass Effect 4 on the horizon, could this lead to something more?

First off, after playing Mass Effect 1 and 2 countless times, and seeing how a majority of Mass Effect 3 lives up to the standards set by its predecessors, it just seems odd that its third act falls so flat. Yeah, there's that whole thing where EA ("in their greed") rushed Bioware into releasing their game on a set date, leaving us with a botched and incomplete ending. However, I fail to see this as a possibility. Personally, I believe that Bioware are experts at story telling, to have even dreamed up such a massive universe, and even a more massive main antagonist, the Reapers. All the exploring, all the foreshadowing, all the references, just for a ending that is so simplistic that so much is left unanswered? I doubt that.

Dark Energy, Harbinger's quote at the end of ME2, "We will find another way", after the Human-Reaper is destroyed, and all the hints towards Indoctrination throughout the third's climax just for a star child to give a cliched reasoning behind the Reapers just seems ludicrous. With all the theories, and all the speculation, Mass Effect 4 may still be dead center in the war against the Reapers.

I still follow the Indoctrination Theory, despite some of Bioware's employees disproving it. Maybe Shepard is stuck almost in a purgatory state, still lying helpless underneath the Citadel as Harbinger and its lackeys tear Earth a new one. Maybe Earth falls, and everyone is forced to retreat as they gather their resources to continue on, following the path of a new character. Maybe, as you build a new team, you'll have to fight not only Harbinger, but an Indoctrinated Shepard as well.

What do you guys think? Is this theory possible? Would this work in Bioware's next installment?

Its been over 2 1/2 years since ME3 was released

I'm not worried about the next ME game until I know more information. Right now, I'm looking forward to DAI

I always get the feeling some people are way too obsessed with indoctrination theory...

And making the big hero of previous games and have him/her back as a puppet villain to fight, NO THANK YOU.

I hope not. That'll go against anything they said numerous times and will alienate all the fans who don't believe in IT.

That's one interpretation, I have my own though.

Honestly though, they have said that the next Mass Effect won't feature Shepard or have any connection to Shepard. So I think you can rule out the next game having an indoctrinated Shepard in it.

It was also said the next game will have a new story, new squadmates, new love interests, and even new antagonists (in other words, no Reapers). Seems they are leaving the past behind and starting fresh. Perhaps even a reboot of the series, or a stand-alone game which doesn't have anything to do with the previous 3 games.

I think Bioware already made it clear that Shepard wouldn't be back in the series...

I hope he stays retired. And even more not to see him return as an enemy (very weird twist, considering you'll be N7, too).

Is it confirmed that player character will be N7?

Judging by the extremely few ME4 videos, I think it is.

I've seen character wearing N7 armor but it can just be an in-game armor piece or something. I don't want my character to have anything to do with the military

Then I'm afraid you'll be dissapointed :D

Well, if it's because of some prejudice against the military (I understand you, believe me), you can always just imagine that the Alliance are way more honorable than any actual military.

Not a prejudice, more like I want to explore other parts of the society in ME universe. I want a Han Solo-type character, perhaps a former military but not in the service during the game events. Gives more freedom for character development ;)

Well, that's true. But I really enjoyed being sort of a military "space sheriff" in ME1, so I'm happy either way :)

Could just be re-use of existing assets to sketch out early ideas.

What if the opening scene to the next Mass Effect shows Reapers with blue eyes racking up dead bodies? Or what if there a turian's with green eyes repairing vehicles?

There's more chance that themikefest will declare liara his favourite character and the asari his favourite race.

I think they've also said it'll be based in the same timeline as Shepard's story...

Well we did see N7's in the preview teaser trailer. Maybe we well be playing one of the N7's we got for war assets. Well... Get ready to put back on your headgear ladies and scoundrels. We have more Reaper forces to put down.

And more Cerberus. And more Geth, probably.

If so, then:

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I think they've already done that (sort of) with the Citadel DLC. I don't think we'll be facing any version of Shepard as an enemy, if for no other reason that it would be repetitive.

Personally i'm sick of Cerberus. Did they really need to make them that cartoonish?

Mass Effect 2 Cerberus was worthy of some minor respect. Mass Effect 3 Cerberus was laughable.
