I admit, I'd much prefer a black uniform, to match the standard black Inquisition armor.
There's a standard black uniform? I missed that. Link please?

The one Cassandra, Leliana, and the others are wearing in DA2, to my knowledge.

Oh. I brainbleached DA2 from my mind.
Were there any uniforms designed specifically for women dating to back then, that look more feminine than this outfit?
I don't think so, so the only uniforms were designed to fit and flatter a man's body but this isn't a period game. They should have designed a completely new outfit.
As far as mobility, you have a much greater range of motion in a dress like this:
Than in armor.
The thing that I do not understand is why it is harder to animate a dress robe then a mage robe. As are they not basically the same?

Well, yes.
I also heard that the outfit your Inquisitor runs around in at their home base cannot be changed either. I dunno bout you all, but for me its WORSE then that hideous Hue Hefner outfit in DA2. Looks like long-john pjs or some mummy banages....ugh.
Bioware: "Here is your base. You can customize it to your taste."
Player: "Can I change out of these hideous PJs....or maybe wear a nice dress to the Orelisan ball if I choose?"
Bioware "Uh, no. Why don't you change your throne, that will make you feel better."
Player: "UGH!"
Granted it is a minor feature, but even the minor features can make a huge impact.
The developers give use a choice on how we choose to play, what we wear in combat etc. It should be no diffrent on what we want to wear at our home base or to a ball. Go all the way with choice or not at all. Half way just does not cut it for me.
Uh...
That is my opinion and I'll stop rambiling before someone smacks me to shut up ![]()

Why on earth would anyone want you to shut up? You speak the truth! Keep preachin! Having them go halfway with the customization as opposed to all the way makes it all feel like a tease. It ain't right. Just makes me sad for all the customization that could have been.

How would you design the uniform, then? And if it'd have no epaulettes, that'd make me sad, because I like shoulder flair.
Oh great, quasi-1900s parade uniforms in a quasi-medieval/early renaissance fantasy, in the empire next to loosely 1000-1300-ish Ferelden.

Just a bit of red and hussar-y button arrangements, and we're there.
Apart from yet another jarring anachronism (long live blender fantasy), the whole uniform thing at a ball in general is also very 19th century. Balls up until the 18th century rarely show military uniforms, but in the 19th and 20th century (when people were uniform-mad) they are very common.
It's Bio's call, but why did they go for 19th century style balls with uniforms, rather than late medieval / early Renaissance, 17th or 18th century ones? In the earlier balls, when male dress was more flamboyant anyway, both males and females, military or not, strutted about proud as peacocks, showing off their fabulous costumes. Uniforms are well, erm, uniform. And it's not even as if these DA uniforms are particularly impressive...
For that, you need something, say, Hungarian...

If you have to go for 19th - early 20th century Old World military flash, go for that kind of Old World military flash ![]()

oooh, now that I like. Maybe without the leopard cloak, but for a male suit I just love that design.

I agree, it's jarring and out of place as well as being overtly masculine.

*I* would design a masculine and feminine outfit that players could choose from or at least let them wear armor. That way people such as yourself could still enjoy the masculine cut and shoulder emphasis and people like me could have something we like as well.
**edit** if I HAD to choose a fancy outfit that both male and female inquisitors would wear it would be something like most of Joffrey's outfits from game of thrones. Fancy fabric, much longer top, embroidery and decorations, little to no shoulder widening, etc...
@Das Tentakel Wow, I didn't even know all that. You learn something new everyday. Thanks for the educational post. All the more reason why they shouldn't have stuck the inquisitor in that uniform. Really digging the pelt on that Hungarian uniform there.
Methinks the Orlesians would have approved of that more than what the inquisitor will actually be wearing. If you shall be socializing with the Orlesian elite, the rule is fab not drab. You need to be glamorous to the point of setting trends if you want to get any real respect. I mean, uniforms don't have to be boring, and the inquisitor didn't have to wear a uniform in the first place. What kind of outfits/styles would have been both accurate to the setting and practical for what the inquisitor was there to do? I have come to the realization that I don't know. ![]()

More fitting with the general time period of influence if nothing else.

...Maybe that's why now mages can wear pants? I've just noticed none of our mage companions wear robes...

This is true. They did robes in the past though, and npc's at the ball will be in dresses won't they? So odd.
It's suspicious.

Maybe is because of the "jump" animation? That wasn't present in the others games, and maybe it can be used at the party...be it while fighting, or maybe jumping during the dance...many dances require to jump, expecialy if are group dances. Much easy to do so while wearing trousers than a dress. (even if I agree it would be cute the chance to choose, in this case, a shorter dress like Josephine's. And I'm talking as one very happy to not have to wear a long dress and love the militar suit)

Jump animation? Care to elaborate? Perhaps you can provide a link? ![]()

Those are lovely. I think I'd opt for something like this:

Still unisex, but the colours are a little brighter and I like the lacing.

Oh, right. I've seen that. What is wrong with me? Yoohoo, scatterbrain. How I remember anything is beyond me. It makes more sense now. I'm actually glad we can jump. I guess I can deal... ![]()
The uniform could have still been spruced up a bit though. I'm just gonna dislike it 'till the bitter defiant end. Just 'cause...
Wouldn't it be possible for them to just turn off the jump function when you're in certain outfits though? "Command not available while wearing current outfit" or some such warning?

What if the jump function is necessary for the ball? probably there will be fighting, but maybe there is some kind of chase too? Something like in the DLC Shadowbroker in ME2, where Shepard jump from the window, but not in a cutscene?
In that case, a dress may be a little too cumbersome to run and jump obstacles.
Just trowing ipothesis here ![]()
I would have not minded something like the coat we can wear with the armature.
